Title: Disable Image Quoting?
Post by: Neutron on Mon 18/04/2005 22:24:32
I see alot of people quoting and including the image in the quote, which is bad for 2 reasons:
1) it causes the page to load slower, which is a hassle for people on dial-up, and,...
2) it sucks the bandwidth of whoever is hosting the image.
Is there a way to disable this feature, and if so, would anyone miss it if it was disabled?

Your browser only downloads the image once, it's no extra downloading or bandwidth usage.  That said, it's just annoying, people shouldn't quote images, or more than a line or two of text.

I think it's a good idea. Dunno how you would implement it though.

The only time this drives me nuts is when somebody quotes a picture that is right above their current post.  So, you are seeing the same pic within 2 posts in a row.

I see this all the time on other forums (lurking), and i don't know why people do it.  Just draw an up arrow or something, don't quote pics!! GRRR.

On the other hand, it does involve  extra downloading or bandwidth usage if say, for example, the original post with picture was on page one, then someone quoted the whole thing in another post in page two or later.

Since most people (me at least) usually checkes only the new posts in a thread, that only load the later pages and not the first, but if the unnecessary pictures were quoted they would be loaded (if the original copy of the first post is no longer cached in memory, this often happens when the first post was made in a much earlier date).

Actually I can see this problem appeared quite frequently, especially in the Completed Game/Game in Production forums and sometimes, the C&C forum.

In some forums in the quotes the picture has just been replaced with [image]. I think that the same should be done here.

Image quoting has always got on my nerves. I'm talking mostly about cases in say, the completed games forum. The original poster posts a screenshot and some info about their game, and someone (often one or two posts below the original) will just quote the entire original post including picture, and then adds one or two lines like, "Great game!". I'd be all for disabling it.

For me, it's annoying in the same way that big images in a signature are. It's just useless, large crap you don't need to see again that adds nothing to the new post. One of the reasons I love this forum so much is that you don't allow big signatures, and you can just read new, relevant information from post to post.

People shouldn't quote more than a line or two of text.
When I quote, I usually just edit the quote in the "post reply" page.Ã,  Like the above quote.Ã,  As for actually implementing the feature, I'd suggest a section in the forum etiquette thread (or whatever it's called), telling people they look dumb and annoying with long quotes.Ã,  And even dumber and more annoying with quoted pictures.Ã,  After that, they get a polite message from a mod, telling them to refer to the etiquette thing.

If they do it again, we get Sunshine to call in an airstrike.

EDIT:

1. Don't quote a huge post to add one line - quote only the relevant bits"
That kinda thing.

If somebody is going to try and be funny by quoting that image there I'm going to have to bring out the knives!

I don't really think it's necessary to disable it. Only because, there are some geniune times when it helps to quote an image. I have a fast connection, so it doesn't really bother me at all, though. Perhaps there could be a way to make it so those who do care can have some way of disabling it, I don't know.

I agree with squinky, though...too tempting.

I think that if you quote an image it should automatically appear as only the url
