Title: Does AGS have side effects?
Post by: Mr_Frisby on Sat 29/05/2004 07:44:27
I am an AGS user, I have to admit it - I think I'm addicted. Every spare moment (for me thats quite a few) seems to be usurped by AGS in some way. It just seems to creep in there.

I though I would ask you fellow AGSers how Gunho you are into AGS - does it effect your life or if you are a recovering AGS fanatic - how did you break the buzz.

                 yours ever so stupidly,
                                 Mr Concerned.

Gota go I'm getting the jitters.

p.s. ignore this thread if I am stupid or if you are in denial.

Well if you got nothing better todo you might aswell do something that interests you rather than something that interests your mates

I haven't used AGS in a long time, but for the past few days I've been working on this thing that is pretty cool.... I've been working so much that I forgot to call the people to at my workplace and tell them that I'm ready to work.. and I start on tuesday and there is no work on Monday because of Memorial Day... d'oh!

Oh well, tomorrow me and AGS will still get aquainted. :P

It seems to be the same for me... in the way that my spare time that I don't spend working with AGS, I'm on #ags and/or reading the forum... but I do play other games and such too... occasionally.

It's addicting, yes, but... It's a bad addiction? IMO, I've learned to work with graphic editors, a little bit of programming, I've gone to meet the friends... I am freely spending my free time with AGS, and, if I were not here, I'd be wasting the same valuable time, but not in AGS, I'd be watching TV or something...

Another history is if it takes time for doing "another" real things, like going with the girlfriend, the mates, with the bike... It doesn't  for me, but I guess it does to somebody.

I'm not really concerned about AGS addiction, but I guess you got that bit already. I really love the medium and think it has alot of potential.
I can't remember the last time I had a hobby that I learned so much in - I guess if you really enjoy something you can get alot out of it.

Being addicted to AGS is no problem, it is simply exercising a creative hobby of yours, shared by lots of other people on these boards! But wait until you get addicted to the community and visit the forum everyday (bar holidays) without fail for four years...

;)

I'm not addicted to AGS... it's just a hobby for me when I have spare time. Whenever I'm not out with my friends skateboarding, video game playing, pulling pranks on strangers or shooting a bow, I'll work on my AGS game.

I wouldn't feel bad about being addicted to AGS, though. Hey, at least you're not addicted to drugs or all that other crap. And, AGS is quite educational, indeed. It tests your creativity since you'll have to draw backgrounds and create a story to go along with your game, and it also tests your logical side when you're programming.

I pretty much agree with Farlander. It's educative, a great replacement for watching TV or something like that but you still shouldn't be using all your free time on it. At least I have sometimes used too much time on graphics or stuff like that when I could've been calling my friends if they're up to anything interesting.

Heh, I almost failed out of two classes last year because of AGS. I'm getting much better about taking breaks from here, but I always seem to do it when really important things happen. And I dont even do anything here!

If you're new and are just getting comforatble with AGS I'm not suprised.  But the longer you use it the less of an addiction you'll have.  But that isn't to say that you won't want to use AGS anymore, it just means that you'll be able to do other things with your time and still enjoy yourself.

It is kinda like getting a new computer game where everytime you decide to turn on your computer and you always decide to play your new game.  And then over time you get the urge to play a different one.

Thanks for the responces. I'm not new to it or really that addicted I just really enjoy it - I was just wondering if anyone had that period when every thing became AGS related - like evils post - and how it effected you.

Heh, AGS still effects a lot of what I do. I've been trying to get an AGS licence plate for a while. Something like...

137AGSR
or
BLUECUP

I've also been questioning getting a bluecup tattoo in the late future. I dunno, anybody else have these feelings of love for AGS as I do?

I've learned much from the community... but I think I spend too much time here on the forums. I'd rather spend more time with my friends. Yesterday was excellent. It was my graduation day, so I didn't even turn my computer on. Then I went to bar with my friends and had really good time, too bad we had to leave so early or we would have had to walk back home...

Also, I think I could spend more time with actual AGS :P

Farlander is absolutely right - game-making is a healthy hobby since it lets you be creative whilst having some fun. So long as you only use it as a replacement for watching TV, and not as a replacement for real life, you're sorted   ;)

The only side-effect I ever noticed when using AGS is that a DeLorean hits my house when I start it up.

I have yet to account for this.

The AGS forums song:

On a dark superhighway,
Cool wind in my hair (from my desk fan)
Warm smell of my coffee
Rising up through the air
Up ahead on my browser
I saw a shimmering light
My mouse grew heavy and my eyes were glazed
Had to log in for the night...

There she stood in IRC
I heard the_mission_bell.mp3
And I was thinking to myself,
this could be Yufster or this could be m0ds in drag
Then she started a DCC
and she showed me a really shaky video
There were voices in #ags
I thought I heard them say:

Welcome to the AGS Forums
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely piece of concept art in the Critics Lounge
Living it up at the AGS Forums
Any time of year
You can find Eric here

They've got mirrors for downloads
They've got ZIPs, RARs and ACE
She said "We are all prisoners here"
"Of our own device"
In the master's forums
They gather for the latest release
They take a stab at making a game
But m0ds still just can't release...

Last thing I remember
I was running for the Beginner's Help
Trying to find out why my hotspot didn't work
When it did with v2.54
"Relax" said the moderator
We can help you with your program
you can log out any time you like, but you can never leave

SSH, shhh! :D

Pretty good actually, besides the fact it doesn't rhyme, and anything that doesn't rhyme and is read without the music or tune, sounds silly.  :D

Yes, I am addicted. I love AGS. I can't wait to wake in the morn to work on AGS before school. It has taught me alot. Look at what I first knew when i first found it...September last year me thinks...Now look at what I know now! Truly taught me alot...thank you CJ! Thank you!

Three cheers for CJ!

I'm addicted to AGS too. I can't make games, I'm impatient, I can't draw, I can't animate, I can't make music, I can't script, BUT GODDAMN I love this community! Spend all my time on these forums and irc.

Since moving to Florida I don't really have any friends so a vast majority of my time is devoted to AGS and these forums.

I spend the day working (acutal work).Ã,  While working I keep the forums open in a seperate browswer window.Ã,  Every now and then I'll take a break and work on AGS stuff.

After work, I start in on AGS stuff.

Then Sara (girlfriend) gets home and I spend a few hours with her until she falls asleep (usually around 11pm) then it's back to the computer for a few more hours.

Of course ... during all this techno madness I take an hour during the day (or so) to work out.Ã,  Swimming, rollerblade, weight training, etc.

Oh ... and my TV is almost always on in the background.

TOO YOUNG TO DIE!

I am glad that other people are affected by this tremendous machine. Thanks for replying to my thread.

Also - SSH nice work on the Hotel California but it should have been in spanish ala Gypsy Kings in Big Lebowski.
Although if Geoff Lebowski where he would probably say -" Not the !@#$# Eagles man, I hate the @#$$ eagles" and then get kicked out of a cab.

y yo pensábamos a me,
