Title: Does anybody speak Hindi?
Post by: DragonRose on Mon 24/04/2006 03:00:05
Hello, all! I've got a mystery, and I need some help.

I was looking through an old journal, and I flipped through to the end pages. On the last two lined pages, I found some writing- not in my own hand, not even in my own language. I've showed it to some friends, and they think it might be Hindi. It looks to be three different people writing, maybe four. I have NO idea what it says. I don't even know who would have written it. Anyone got any ideas on what it says?

QuoteKhudi ko ker buland itna
    Keh Himalya kee choti
    per ja pohanchay
    Aur khuda tum se poochay
abay gadhay tu utray ga kaisay

    Gul Gay Gulsham Gaye,
    Gul ke Patte ah Gaye
    Sare Shayair Mar Gaye
Tum ullu (I think) ke Pathe Rah Gaye

    Mere Mare ke bad mera
closton (might be doston), yun Ansoo na bahana
    Agar emeri yada aye lu
    sidha eefar chaleye ana

    Ye did tumpe aaya

    Kasur is ka nahim
    Mili yeh nigahain tumse
    Minka milna humari
    galti nahin
    Kuch kho se gaye hum
    Jab Jab dekhe lage tumhe
    Pyar hogaya hume tumse

And if you DO know what it means, and it's insulting, please just e-mail me rather than posting it in a comment? Thanks!

A quick google quickly identified the language.  That's actually Urdu, the language of Pakistan.  The meaning... no idea.  But the first line seems to also be the name of a song.  These may be lyrics...

WARNING: Translation may seem incredibley corny

Make yourself so high
That on the Himalya's peak
You reach
And God will ask you:
You ass, how will you get off?

Gul has gone, Gulshan has gone [Not sure, I think these are names of places]
Gul ke pathe [Not sure what this is. Some kind of abuse, I think], ah, gone,
All the cities have died
You idiot [closest translation of ullu ke patte I can think of] are left

After my Mara [no idea what this means here. Mara would mean "hit"] my
Friends [It is doston], don't cry like this
If you are remembering me
Come straight to eefar [No idea what this means]

This did [ Sorry, once again no idea what this means] came upon you

It is not my fault
I got these nigahain [This is definitely a word, just one that I can't remember the meaning of ] from you
Our meeting is
Not a mistake
We have eroded [Best translation I can think of] some
Whenever I see you
I fall in love with you

/me  is very ashamed of his lack of urdu knowledge

Seriously. If someone who knew urdu saw my translation, I'd probably get a beating. Although to my defense, I think there may be some errors in what you wrote.

Also, I believe this is originally from Iqbal's poetry.

So I guess the real question is WHY this is in your journal... :)

QuoteYe did tumpe aaya

Urdu? Balderdash! This is clearly Ye Olde Englishe. You should try to remember if you know anyone named Aaya, maybe they could shed some light on this.

Wow! Thanks, Babar! And yes, there probably ARE some errors in what I wrote- one of the people writing it had REALLY bad hand writing.

But I'm really confused now. I don't think I know anyone who speaks Urdu. I had at least narrowed it down to a shortlist of people I knew who spoke Hindi, but Urdu has me mystified.

Urdu and Hindi is basically the same thing. Since (it appears) that the writing was in English script, someone who knows hindi would know what it meant. And Junoon is, unfortunately, a reasonably famous band.

And in this particular place, ass means donkey. The word for donkey and the...other ass is not the same in urdu. You dirty, dirty, person.

you find hidden text and you expect words of wisdom. Instead, you get pop lyrics :(

This is not a complete poem, these are 5 seperate shairis. I modified babs' thing so it wasn't so literal(urdu and hindi translate really badly straight to english) and filled in the words he didn't know. For shame dude, it's your language. ;)

Make yourself so strong
That you can reach the peak of the himalayas
And when you reach there, God will ask you:
You ass, how are you going to get back down?  (this isn't so much a poem as a joke)

The roses have gone, the rose garden has gone
The leaves of the roses, have gone,
All the cities have died
Only you, you idiot are left (um...ok o_O)

After I die my
friends, don't shed any tears
If ever you remember me,
Come straight to eefar [No idea what this means <- me either :P]

This did [ Sorry, once again no idea what this means] come upon you

It was not my eyes' fault
that they met yours
Their meeting
was not my mistake
I lost myself in them
and now when I see you
I fall in love with you
