I have a little problem that I need sorting.
I recently made a skating video of me and my friends. I was quite happy with it and I gave my friends each a MPEG version of the unfinished edit.
Then I had a new computer and I tried transferring all the data across. After transferring it all and (stupidly) formatting the other disk I went to see if it all was there. At first I thought it was a success but then to my disbelief I realized that it had gone :o! Then I remembered that I gave my friends each a MPEG copy of the video, it may not have the quality but all was not lost.
So I got the disk off one of my friends and copied it over to my computer but my editing software I have doesn't accept MPEGs so I couldn't finish the edit.
So my question is, does anyone know how to convert MPEGs to Avis?

Just google "mpeg to avi" for a suitable program. Most'll be trials, but if this is all you need it for, that shouldn't be a problem...

I just downloaded that. I was going well until 50%, it said I had to pay for a code. I'd rather not bye a code if anyone knows of another free program. I'll keep searching though...
Adobe Premiere is superb for any video work...
But then again, it's not free.
get DVDx, it's designed for converting DVDs to mpeg/avi but it can also load MPEG to be converted to other formats, you can find a link at http://doom9.net
Google for Bink and Smacker. It can convert almost anything to anything.. But you need Quicktime installed.

The question's a bit vague. MPEG is one file format standard, AVI is a Video for Windows Base, either one can use different codecs (is the video MPEG I, II, IV?)
If you're using Windows XP, Windows Movie Maker ought to do a capable job of importing and dumping the video. If it's unable to then it's likely due to an improper codec being installed (or proper one missing). One good program I've found for reconverting files (though it can be randomly picky) is tMPGenc (google that). It's free unless you're dealing with MPEG-II and then it's limited to a couple weeks after first use. It's the only program I used a couple years back that was capable of converting to a proper VCD (MPEG-I) format for burning use.
