Domain hosting?

Hi,

I've done Google searches and stuff, but I'd rather have people's personal opinions on domain hosting. Basically what I want is a cheap _____.com domain name and about 50 megs of space and as much bandwidth as I can get.

Apart from that, PHP would be nice, but I'm willing to go without.

Any suggestions, folks?

CJ, Sylpher, AGA, my girlfriend, and I'm sure other people use Ipowerweb and I think it's a nice deal

I'm gonna be snagging one soon

Yes.. Go with Ipowerweb.. It's great.

Ipowerweb seems to be the way to go ...

The cheapest I could get you on one of my servers is $20.00 per month (if you pay for a year in advance) but you get virtually no restrictions on space and/or bandwidth.

But for $7.95 @ www.ipowerweb.com ... doesn't seem like you can go wrong with that!

I use http://www.totalchoicehosting.com. Really freindly and solve problems instantly, even on Sundays. They are a bit cheaper than Ipowerweb, however Ipowerweb offers more for the buck. I pay $5.00/month and there is a $4.00/month plan as well.

Ooh, that totalchoicehosting.com looks really good! I might just go with that.

Is it reliable? Have you experienced any problems?

Looks like if I go with totalchoicehosting, I'll have to buy a separate domain name, because it doesn't come with the package, right? They sell domain names there for like $10, but I've seen domain names for $4/year.

Would their domain names not be the re-direction type, but the "normal" ones?

Yeah, I crashed the entire server once (PHP script gone mad)and they had it back up and running in about two minutes. Other than me personally crashing the server I have NEVER been unable to reach my site in over 2 years of service with them.

>because it doesn't come with the package, right?

Buy your domain name somewhere else, BUT make sure you have complete control over DNS servers. Make sure you don't have to email someone to get them changed. Once you sign up just point your DNS to TCH's, they will give you that info (I think it's in the FAQ).

> Would their domain names not be the re-direction type, but the "normal" ones?

Normal. This isn't cheap crap. Top notch web host.

EDIT: Evil, did you look at the prices at Totalchoicehosting and Ipowerweb? They are both MUCH better.

Those both look very nice..

I'm also thinking of getting a webhost, I would go for the one Eric posted if I needed the 40 gig of transfer but I doubt us mere mortals would ever use that without posting huge games or videos.

So does totalchoicehosting.com give you a subdomain or something when you buy one of their plans? So like "www.totalchoicehosting.com/whatever/", so you could just get a redirection domain or something that would be easily compatible?

No, the domain will be easily compatible but it won't be that.. don't worry about it, they'll probably have adequate instructions for you. I read the instructions at godaddy.com once, they have a section that explains it somewhere.

My band uses streamlinenet.co.uk..  which does says it does php, but I'm having real problems getting it to work.
My personal site is with perfecthosting.co.uk..  which so far, I use for email purposes.  Nifty, cheap with 3 months free, i think.

I think I'm going to go with the totalchoicehosting.com webhosting. It seems like a great deal for the price.

Now all I need is a domain hoster. I'm not really looking for anything fancy -- it could just be a redirection thing. But I do want emails.

Thanks!

Evil

Junc, I run my own server. 120 gigs of utimate goodness. Its the cheapest place to get private domains. Heh, and for running a full time warez server, you have to be on the downlow.

Gregjazz

In case you haven't figured it out yet, Evil REALLY is evil.

:)

Evil

Heh, not to mention its a major no-no with my servace provider. Recently they've been running a lot of their trucks around my neighborhood. Then again I'm saving a ton of money.

Geoffkhan: I think you still don't understand. You don't need a domain hoster ;D. All you need to do is register the domain with someone. No redirection. TotalChoice takes care of EVERYTHING else for you. Domain registration, web host, and redirection are three different things. Redirection is only needed if your web host doesn't support personal domain names. For example, a geocities.com user would have use for redirection. However with Totalchoice that service is part of it.

You only need to pay for two things:
1. Domain Registration (once per year fee, usually around $10, cheaper someplaces)
2. Web Hosting (once per month[what TotalChoice offers])

Evil: Ah, yes, doing it yourself is MUCH better. You have complete control. My ISP wouldn't be able to handle a server though. I have DSL and it just sucks.

Migs

Here's one for $3.95. 5 GB of web space, 40 GB bandwidth, $10/year domain registration.

Or what about this one?Ã,  Web Hosting Starter Package for $11.95/year.Ã,  50 MB of disk space, 2 GB/month bandwidth.

Gregjazz

That top one looks interesting, Migs, but for $5 in the totalchoicehosting I can get many more features.

Junc, so how do I "register the domain with someone"? Ah, so you suggest I just get TCH's domain name service for $10 in addition to the $5/month plan? That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

It is reasonable. It's what, $5 difference between the cheapest places on the net?
