Title: DOOM^3
Post by: edmundito on Wed 04/08/2004 21:57:09
Doom Cubed? I'm glad they're not calling it that! they just think that putting the three in a top left corner is cool... then again, where else would they put it without making the DOOM logo look bad.

I was wondering if anyone is buying the game. It came out like yesterday, and it looks pretty scary. Yeah yeah, I can see people saying "T3h g4me that k1ll3d 4dventur3 g4m3z!!!1" but really that's just a bad excuse.

Any thoughts of on DOOM and DOOM^3? I was wondering if anyone had anything to share.

I would buy it but... 1) It's $55!! I'll wait for it to be $20-30 if anything, 2) My video card probably can't handle it, and 3) I NEED TO MAKE AN ADVENTURE GAME. I can't be playing games right now. I'm already having a hard time making one with not playing games nor watching tv? what the hell am I doing, then?

Not bad, by no means great (so far, i haven't got far but i often give up on games if they don't 'grab' me near the start, but i'm giving it a chance)

Personally, i'm waiting for a proper good remake of Doom (there are a few single maps remade, not very good though as of yet) with the number of enemies Doom had, so my pc is well and truely lagged ;)

I've played it.. It is very very resource intensive.. It even skips on my bro's computer.. But I can run it pretty well with everything set to low.

The game is shit scary! All the hype was correct..

Best. FPS. Ever

Oh man. This game would be so much scarier if there were approx. 50 times less monsters in it, and those that remained would be five times stronger. As it is now, it's not scary at all. It's just "enter room, shoot everything that is in room (god forbid there would be a room with no monsters at all!), yawn, wait for monsters that teleport into room and then shoot them, go to next room". And the monsters! Each new monster introduced is more annoying than the last one! Spiders? Flying babies? Not scary. Just very, very, very annoying. This game had so much potential, but I just don't think it's great at all.

So my one line review would be "Way too many monsters, but damn it's pretty."

Custard, I thought DOOM  3 was a remake of DOOM.

Ghormak, yeah, I think that definitely I would poop my pants (maybe I said too much) if I came into a room and there was nothing and all of the sudden *GASP* a creature jumps out of the shadows, and it's hard to kill!

It's a retelling of Dooms uh, 'story'

I mean a exact copy of the maps but on Doom 3s engine, perhaps guns in the middle of the screen too :)

Another thing that bothers me is the difficulty names, they're so boring, like 'Recruit' ... what happened to the ones that mocked you for taking the easiest difficulty?

Edit: I retract my statement having finished the game :P

I want to make an adventure game in that engine. It'd be pretty.

Maybe John Carmack freaked out after half-life and decided to make the names more serious and keep the sense of realism that you're actually some marine in a base in mars. Or maybe he thought he was too politically incorrect in the first DOOM. Then again, it's not like random monsters from hell ever attacked earth...or Mars. If you think about it, game/movie logic (but adventure games) is weird because there's I don't think anyone gets attacked by random bad guys, specially super intelligent animals.

I bet someone can make an exact doom remake mod, (they're going to do it with CS with the new Half-Life 2 engine! 1337) except you'll be missing out all the 3d map level modelling that has evolved (since on doom you couldn't really jump or go to rooms above or below you.. I think it was just one flat level with stairs that made you believe there were more levels).

Ha, I'm talking about this so much, and I don't even like FPS that much. I liked Halo, and I've yet to beat the stupid game. I borrowed half-life too, and I've yet to beat it. I did beat Wolfenstein 3D shareware!!!1

The game is scary in the beginning. at least on easy, when there aren't that many monsters. Zombies creep me out. at least when they walk in the shadows and you're sneaking around with a flashlight, atrying to avoid getting eaten. I have to run it on medium on my PC. they could've added disembodiment (spelling) to the zombies, I mean, right now they just die or break down, zombies are much more scarier when they continue walking towards you when your shotgun just blew half of them away. The demons? Not bad, but not scary.
I like when you collect peoples PDA (Personal Data Assistant), and there's random information, sometimes keycodes, and even real spam from the future! Pfft... MartianBuddy

Annoying:
- The spiders and flying heads. Not challenging, not scary, a waste of bullets.
- You can see a brain flying away when you shoot a headless zombie to pieces.
- The cheap blade effect, when the monsters just fry.
- Hard to get weapons

I love the berserker effect.

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of it now.

I'm not fond of fps games, but those graphics kick ass. I can't wait for other games to come out on the same engine.

I wish Blender was like the Doom 3 engine. Maybe one day.

I've heard that HL2 is gonna be good.  I read that if you catch one corner of a building on fire (even by accident) you can actually  burn down the whole level.  The fire spreads to burnable objects realistically.  The reviewer accidentally shot a barrel instead of a crab-zombie and blew the flaming body onto another barrel, which exploded, and lit a warehouse on fire.  When he returned later, the whole building went up.  Thats cool.  I wouldn't want to play either D3 or HL2 on anything but the maximum settings, cause those kinda games are kindof a waste of time if you don't have the pretty graphics to look at, IMO.

Since everyone missed it.. or ignored it. Netmonkey I got your joke and it was funny.

I haven't played but I plan too. I am seeing a lot of "Well, I can't wait for some good mods to come out/can't wait for someone to make something really cool with the engine." Which says enough about the game itself to me.

I played it tonight on my brothers system, which can actually run it.
I put it on veteran right away, cause I wanted the suspense and all that jazz.
I'm blown away, that's all I can say.
Absolutely what I was hoping for.
Now hopefully the mod community will do some crazy stuff with it.
And also a free computer will fall on my head.

hehe.. Actually, it STILL looks pretty on the crappiest settings.. I also found some tweaks on www.d3iles.com that you put into the console:

Ctrl+Alt+~ brings up the console, then you can type these in:

"r_gamma 1.2" - This sets the gamma a tad higher if you have troubles seeing. Default is 1.0

"com_videoRam=128" - This sets the value for how much RAM your card has... Course, if you're card only has 64 MB, the value would be 64, not 128. And even then, don't bother changing this setting... 64 is default.

"image_cacheMegs 96" - Changes the allocated space to use for textures. You can use any number you want.. But 96 seems to do the trick. I use 128, and someone got it up to 256.

These tweaks really help the game run faster. The only slowdowns I experience now are from having too many enemies on the screen at once.

My initial reviews of the game, you ask? Well, it's just what I expected.. Purely gorgeous carnage fun. What more could you ask for?

An even better tweak is so you don't have to press Ctrl and Alt when you want to bring up the console ;)

ohh great argument starter...

Halo2 will beat Doom3 in soo many ways.

halo2 multiplayer (moving screenshot(big file)): http://media.teamxbox.com/halo2_3dscreenshot_01.mov

Disclaimer: it took me over 10 minutes to find a bad doom3 screenshot... that was the worst i could find

I'm not going to tell which one is worse or better before playing them. Doom 3 I have played and found awesome. Half-life 2 has yet to be played.

you can't compare still image of one with 'motion' of another ... i think you're just a twisted xbox fanboy

looking at the halo2 one, there is some horrible lighting going on there

I'll be waiting 'till I get my new laptop, which can hopefully run it... I've been waiting for Doom3 since I learned there is Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, but no Doom3...

To me, it really doesn't matter how scary the game is.. the main thing is to blow them goddman badass'asses to bits... heh... Some say Doom was scary... To me, it wasn't. Even when I played it at the age of 8 or 9...

http://www.viperlair.com/articles/howto/software/tweakd3/ Here's some better tweaks..

And yes you do have to hit Ctrl + Alt + ~ for Doom 3.. At least in America :-p But there's a tweak that will change that.. It's all in that link above.

Enjoy.

Oh, and Halo 2 is a totally different "style" of FPS, so it's really not all that fair to compare.

Let's compare Doom 3 to Duke Nukem 3D.

Duke3D: cool wise-ass player character
Doom 3: runs at 2 fps

Duke3D: funky real-world maps and locations
Doom 3: runs at 2 fps

Duke3D: variety of weapons makes it fun to play
Doom 3: runs at 2 fps

Duke3D: more interaction and hidden treats than any other previous fps
Doom 3: runs at 2 fps

Conclusion:

Duke3D: stays right where it is
Doom 3: DELETED!!!!

Okay.. Don't believe the minimum specs. If you have a machine equal to or better than mine, you will be fine running at the lowest possible settings and using the tweaks.

My specs are:

1 Ghz AMD Athlon XP
512 MB SDRAM
GeForce ti4600 128 MB Ram

The game will run rather smoothly with this.. Only slowdowns occur when there are more than 3 enemies in the area. This motivates you to kill them faster :)

All in all, Doom 3 is quite the awesome game.

It's all about the graphics card. I've got a 3.40GHz P4 processor (oh baby!), but if I didn't have a fairly recent graphics card (a GeForce FX 5200 [which is about equal to LGM's card, I think, since it's a budget model], so only relatively powerful), it would run like shit even on my PC...

CJ, ever played BDP? A duke addon, that is... I think it makes the game even greater, as it brings four new episodes to beat time after time on the hardest skill, (arrrgh, I'm stuck, as usual, not fun!) and a new weapon, CD thrower... anyway... what was my point? The goddamn game shoud ship to Finland already so I could compare it with stuff!

We used to have a real good time setting traps for each other in Duke 3d multiplayer.
Nothing was more satisfying than setting up a Holoduke and watching your opponent run in guns blazing just before you sent a rocket up his ass.
Or hearing the explosion of a well placed laser-mine in the distance.
Haha, good times.

Says that if you decompress the .pk4 files (I think they are in the base folder in ID games) and then delete the .pk4 files, it will run alot smoother with lower loading times.

But also, it makes the game about 2x as heavy and you won't be able to play on pure servers.

I played the demo, and I am currently waiting to get paid, so I can buy a new video card and convince my friend to buy it.

I bought the game yesterday, it seems pretty good although with brightness levels all the way up it still is almost too dark to even see and the flashlight realy sux. I played Ultimate Doom all the time but I find this one kinda hard to move about in complete darkness and a lot of flashing lights. Online play only allows 4 people max, but I did see 2 or 3 servers that were 10 and 16 ( I'm not sure how they do this? ) All in all seems pretty good but I would like to see some changes in a future patch  :P

AMD Athlon XP 1600+
Geforce4 Ti 4200 64MB Ram w/ Omega Drivers
512 mb DDR ram

Runs great on my system

Doom 3 is so scary, even the bravest of people wet their pants when playing. And if you ever went to a coward's house that has Doom 3, right next to their computer must be many big puddles.... ;D
