Hola amiguitos.
I'm 16 nowÃ,  ;D; yes my birthday was in december 2 and I don't see any congrats around the forumsÃ,  ;) >:(
Well I have doubts about one of my gifts: a IBM computer.
It's a intel pentium 4 with 2.8 Ghz and 256 Mb ram. It has windows xp home and a intel extreme graphic (if I want it to have 64 Mb, it took them from my ram! :-\).
These are my questions: a) Should I change the intel extreme card ???? Is it good?
b) Is windows xp a good OS? What are its pros and cons? Should I change it for Windows Me? (my favorite OS).

That's all, and thaks in advance.

This might just be an historical comment!!  Have we found the one fan of Windows ME??  Could it be?

XP (if you're gonna use Windows) is the way to go.

As for the other stuff ... a graphics card with only 64 MB RAM??  I would definately updgrade that.

Oh ... and happy birthday.

Eleazar

Wow, it was fast :o.
Hey!! Windows me is the best!! :P. It's fast, user-friendly and I can do anything I want ;D.
Seriously, I've heard that you can't play old games in XP. Is that true?
As for the video card; are 512 Mb nescesary?

Blade

True, XP is very old-game-unfriendly. But I'd advise 98 instead of ME. Maybe it's old, but doent' crash very often. Certainly get a better card.

And happy birthday.

Well, by using DosBox, VDMSound and a bit of luck or even alchemy, you can run most Dos-based games without any serious problems, so far there are only a handful of games I haven't been able to run on XP.  Heck, I've run more Dos games on XP than in 98! That being said, some games designed for Windows, such as Discworld Noir are very XP-unfriendly. Though if you're not going to use XP, 98 is the way to go, ME must be the most unstable OS evare! I have used them for almost a year, so I would know. :P

Otherwise, definitely get a new graphics card, on-board graphics cards are awfull when it comes to running modern games, one with 128MB VRAM should be fine, and you should also get at least 256 more MBs of RAM.

And yes, happy birthday!

I've got most of my old games working on XP with less hasle than 98. I had ME for two weeks, but it had too many bugs for me to enjoy it. So I degraded to 2000, and upgraded to Xp when it came out. The first thing I did after setting up XP was to make sure my Space Quest games would work. They do.

XP has a vast driver library, so it't plug and play.
I can't play dos games. Well, I can play dos games, but there's no sound or music or some other bug.
Keep your old computer too.

XP is leaps and bounds better then ME.  I've always concidered Win ME user hostile.

PS: Upgrade the card.

PPS: Happy Birthday!

First: Happy Birthday.

About the card, upgrade it to atleast an ATI 9600 or a Geforce card of same statistics. If you can afford, you could get even newer cards. I've found 9600 very adequate for running FarCry, and it runs Half-Life 2 without problems with most settings on high. If you do want to prepare for newer games I suppose a better card is an investment for the future. Also see to that the card you decide to buy has at least 128mb, prefferrably more.

Also about the ram. I have 1024 mb ram in this machine. where I live a 256 ram chip is below 20â,¬. although a 512 is around 80â,¬ :'(

About the windows dilemma. I say if you want an older OS, why not have both installed? My cousin has both XP and 98, which he uses to play older games without having to find XP fixes or tweak settings.

Windows XP is good. All the Windows are ranked from lowest to highest BEST to WORST (edit: oops :)) in this order:

1. Windows 2000
2. Windows XP
3. Windows 98
4. Windows Me
5. Windows 95
6. Windows 3.1

For AGS games, your intel card should probably work.

TerranRich

Your "lowest to highest" comment should probably be reversed. As I'm sure you meant to say, Win 2K is the best, and it goes down from there. ;) Just thought I'd point that out, webgorilla

Jojojo ;D.
Well, I've been testing xp and its not that bad :P. The only thing is that I can't play my old dos-based adventure games :'(, and I don't want to download any programs. So I'll keep my old comp :).
I don't kanow what're you talking about, Windows Me is the best >:(!! It's not unnestable, doesn't crash and I can play my old adventures!
Look, my old computer (the one I used before the p4) is this:
Ibm Thinkpad
Pentium III 600 Mhz
64 Mb ram
4 Mb video card
Windows Me
Jejeje, I suppose you are thinking "what a crapppy comp"; but no! I can do anything on that computer: I worked with 3d max, rederized animations, play AGS games, etc.
So 256 Mb ram are a LOT compared with my old comp, and 2.8 Ghz, Jesus!!!

I had that same card before I went to geforce. Its ok , I ran Call of Duty at max settings and UT2004 at min.

I managed to run 3d max on my 133mhz back in the days.
It's not about if you CAN do it. It's about how WELL you do it.
By the time you read this you've already read it.

well, really, if you want one OS wich works good with games (3d) use me, or 98, that's what i would do.
and lazy z, i would not download those adds, ... i would prefer to have the full program running into my computer, really.
waiting for the AG of the century .....

Lazy Z

Argh! My nickname is Lazy Z, not Lady! Please edit that or people will get the wrong idea. :P

And what do you mean by
Quotei would not download those adds, ... i would prefer to have the full program running into my computer, really.

You still run the full games by using DosBox/VDMSound, if that's what you mean. Those programs are just Dos emulators, nuthin' more than that.
