hi
now i know ags isn't the placce to look for this sort of stuff but if someone could tell me were a good place to look would be or knows about this let me know
I have a Laptop and a Desktop, both microsoft, and i want to make a program that will run my Desktop and all it's stuff on the Laptop but not save it, like seeing my Desktop screen on the Laptop,so my laptop becomes a "dumby". That is about it so if any one have any ideas let me know
Thanks
Hm. So you have a lap top and a desktop computer running Windows, yes? And you want to work on your desktop, using the lap top as a monitor?
edit: Did a small google search, seems that one option is to connect monitor to lap top's graphic card by means of an adapter. Seems a bit obscure to me, though. Then again, I never owned a laptop.
If both computers are on the same network you could use Windows' Remote Desktop feature to access your desktop from the laptop. Don't expect to be able to play games through this connection though, it will lag horribly.
As much as a PC person I am, I have no idea how to do this. On a mac, you can just hook them up via VGA cable (not really, but I forget what the VGA-for-Mac port is called), and according to Ghost's post, sounds like you can probably do the same with a PC.

You need to have a video card on your harddrive that's capable of a video input, which most laptops don't have. Most new laptops have a video out, and you could probably run your laptop to your desktop monitor, but not the other way around.
Thank you guys
you have all been a great amount of help
and thanks for the quick replies

As I understand it you want to 'see' the desktop on the laptop. It that's the case, have you thought about RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/winvnc.html)? Make your desktop the server and you can use the laptop as viewer. You can use the VNCViewer (http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/winvncviewer.html) but you can also set it up to use any webbrowser so the 'viewer' doesn't need any particular installations.
If you want to make it yourself you should have a look at openVNC (http://sourceforge.net/projects/openvncpro/).
Why don't you just take a screenshot on your Desktop monitor and email it to yourself as an attachment... then open up the email using your Laptop and open the attachment in your favourite paint package, and Voila... Bob's your uncle.
I was going to suggest VNC as well, though it looks as though Leon has beaten me to it. I may have gotten your intention wrong, as I honestly have no idea what a 'dumby' computer is, but through using VNC, you can remotely access your desktop and control it (albeit with a little lag) from another computer on the network.
The largest benefit of this is that you can have a fully functional second computer with only the tower. All inputs are controlled remotely from your other workstation, so if you want a computer to do a lot of grind work without slowing down your game terminal, or whatever, it's a great solution to break up the load. Of course, it works quite handily as a remote server for your larger files as well.
I think you're referring to dumb terminal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumb_terminal#Dumb_terminal).
Remote Desktop Connection is pretty good, you can even work pretty lag free through the internet, not just inside the LAN.
As has been said, you won't be able to run newer 3D games and the like, but it even sends the sound to the remote computer.
The program comes with XP and you just need to enter the LAN IP address of the Desktop, then log into to a user account. It does save stuff you change though; it's no different from actually working on the remote computer.
I totally remembered a program that my bro used, LogMeIn. He was able to use my home computer (his old one) while on his laptop in Japan.

I never said I hated PC. Actually, I love PC and I hate Mac (unless video editing--FCP FTW!)
