Hey guys, I'm trying to convert a DVD (non-commercial) to a file format such as .mov or .wmv or such. I tried using HandBrake, and although I like it, its output formats and encoding options are limited.
Is there any other good software that can allow me to do this? Any ideas much appreciated.
Greg, I use ImToo DVD Ripper, you'll need to find a serial for it, but its pretty good. You can capture entire DVD's or just segments (ie 3 minutes worth). Output format can be .mpeg or .avi, tho I've never got .avi to work. The .mpeg files can then be converted into .wmv or.mov using media-convert.com, but cos its so huge, its probably better to use an editing suite. Premiere 6 doesn't like the mpeg files ImToo creates, so I convert them to AVI first in MGI VideoWave. Good luck!
DVD Decrypter will rip a DVD to a MPEG2, or VOB, file, with the video stream and audio stream of your choice combined. Then it's simply a case of converting that MPEG2 file into something more managable, like a Divx or Xvid MPEG4 file.
Conversion of a 5GB VOB file into a 400-500mb+ Xvid file takes about 2 hours.
DVD Decrypter, which also cracks the copy protection on DVDs, cannot currently, as far as I know, be offered for download (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Decrypter).
I'm sure it's available somewhere, though.
Auto Gordian Knot will get you to an .AVI file quite nicely.
Just in case you need any more choice, my own personal preference;

I agree with Mr Flibble.
