Remember the Recorder?

Remember the Recorder? That plastic wannabe instrument thing you played in 3rd grade that you gave up on after failing learning "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and breaking too much fine glassware by shreiking piercingly into the thing like it was some sort of low noise sensitive electric shock mechanism?

I used to think the recorder was the work of the devil's two hands themselves.  But just now, I actually found out about a virtuoso recorder player, Michala Petri.  http://www.michalapetri.com/
She takes this stick of doom and blows into it to create an amazing sound.  I'm even now inspired to go back to the bowels of my garage and find the recorder I tried playing with back in elementary school.  I know AGS hosts a ton of musicians, and I thought I could share this find with you guys, cause it sure opened my mind to the recorder.

Wow. I really need to practice. :)

Keep in mind she's not using those cheapo plastic ones. I have a friend who plays recorder (amazingly, I might add), but I never really made a connection to what he plays and those plastic ones from way back.

Yeah, those fancy wooden ones are nice.

Well, I looked all night and couldn't find mine.  I'll have to ask around at school (I'm sure one of the disgruntled marching band kids still has one of theirs).

I never had a plastic one. I used a wooden one back in the day. 8) :P

I have three (3) of 'em still. And a whole bunch of crappy sheet music for simple songs and christmas tunes from Elementary. Its kinda sad that artists such as
Bright Eyes
use recorders and all I can do is make a death blare of high pitched noise.

I think the only song i could play was HOT CROSS BUNS. I was good at that one, but stunk at the rest. I remember having a concert for our families when i was, if i can remember correctly, probably in 3rd or 4th grade. I just pretended to play it (the recorder) while on stage. Boy, were my parents so proud of me.  :D

believe it or not, true story.

I bought what was apparently a better quality plastic recorder about a year ago for about £12.  I don't remember much of a difference in sound compared to the £1 recorder, but it was a long time ago since I played that.  That aside, I'm as crap as ever.  Are the wooden ones notably better compared to the plastic?

I remember playing the recorder. I still know most of the notes, so I can play a few little tunes. I don't think I own one though. As far as I'm aware, the wooden ones have a much nicer, warmer sound than the plastic ones. Someone at my old church used to play a double sized wooden one and it sounded pretty good.
