Performance problems with Dual Core CPU's

I've just started using AGS and have been playing around with the program, the interface and how to use it. However, I have noticed that the game runs extreemly poorly on my AMD 3800+ X2, BFG 7800GTX, 2gig ram computer. Manually tabbing out of the game and setting the processes affinity to only one cpu seems to return the game back to normal speed but without doing this it runs at around 1fps or less.

Is there anyone here with a dual core processor that can duplicate this?

I don't have such configuration to try and replicate the problem but what if you fiddle with different settings in the game setup, such as disabling music/sound or running in a window instead of fullscreen.

Does it make any difference?

Also, do you run a game from the AGS Editor (using test game option) ?

If so, what if you run EXE file directly (from the YourGame\Compiled folder) ?

Settings don't appear to make a difference, window and fullscreen have the same effect. I'm running this from within the AGS Editor but haven't tried running from a compile (Not that I think it will make much of a difference).

I get similar problems with most non-dual core designed games these days. Games like Oblivion, Half Life, Battlefield all run fine, but single core designed games such as advent rising, Planetside, Warcraft III and so on all have performance issues unless I set the affinity to one processor.

It is possible that the problem is just my pc however, so I would like anyone else with a dual core processor (preferably AMD) to advise if they experience the same problem or not.

Probably, but still it worth to try just in case, considering it otherwise runs as a child process I believe.

You can download a dual-core driver from AMD's website that is supposed to help with some of these problems. I sometimes had AGS problems like you describe when I had an X2 4800+ but I was never sure if  it was the CPU or the graphics card. Anyway, its worth a try!

Also, I think games made before AGS 2.71RC3 used an older version of Allegro which didn't like new Nvidia graphics cards. You can use the latest engine to run older games, see the AGS 2.72 thread for details.
