Ever had an AGS encounter?

Blackthorne

So, last week I was at a local bar for a friend's birthday.  Amdist the beer and conversation, I began talking with my friend's co-worker.  We got to talking about what we did and I mentioned that I'd been making a game.

I tried to explain what I was doing...

"Well, we're remaking an old Sierra game.  Ever heard of King's Quest III?"

"Yeah!  I had that when I was a kid."

"Yeah, well - we're remaking it in the style of the later King's Quest games..."

"Oh, like V and VI?"

"Yeah, totally."

"You using AGS?"

I cracked up.  It's not often in my life that I get asked that!  Turns out the guy new exactly what I was using, and who I was by my net-handle (Blackthorne.)  Trust me, it's weird when a complete stranger says "Oh, wow... you're Blackthorne?  I visit your site."

Anyone else have experiences like this?

That's weird... wow.

The only think I've had close to that is my StarWars fan friend who hangs around the fan film community of LucasForums. He's a director, cg artist and musician... where as I hang around the LucasArts games section. We've gotten to talk and it's cool that we already know about each other just by things the online community has discussed. And now we're collaborating on at least making a trailer for a film version of Fate of Atlantis.

Oh, and there was that time I was on some guy's lawn and then a whole bunch of nerds pointed their flashlights at me, demanding to know who I was, and the only way I could reference myself was by Scummbuddy. I felt stupid doing it, as it was possible the group in front of me wasn't a bunch of silly Mitteneers.

- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

The guy who reppairs my computer when it cracks told me he know the engine and that it's lovely. And I had some other "not so casual" encounters with AGSers:

"-Grundy? Farlander here. We are going to Miami. We have no money. Host us!
-But my house is small...
-We are small!
-But mom is here!
-We like your mom!
-But Lorena is allergic to cats, and I have three!!!
-Shut up sissy! We are going anyway!!!"
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Kinoko

Nope, but that's cool story! ^_^ I hope it happens to me someday.

Yea, I had a classmate that had fiddled around with the engine, but sadly never made anything serious with it. It wasn't until the second year I discovered he knew about AGS, or he discovered what I had done with it.

Well working here we have a habit of sending funny stuff or links, etc. via the company's internal email system := to other team members (we discuss about everything, from serious work related material to lame jokes, on average each of us receives about 50 mails daily and no, WE DON'T CONSIDER THAT SPAMMING).

One day (which was about 2 years ago I think), one of my co-workers send us an email with subject "Games" and link in content:

I once met a lady in a bar, got chatting to her and eventallu went back to her place. After a night of hot passion we had breakfast together and it turns out her son made a game called "Jon Stickman" and wrote for an adventure gaming website....!  ;)

hahaha @ SSH

It did happen to me though; during a party a few years ago me and some sort of geeky guy started chatting, mostly because he seemed bored and I wanted to converse politely. It turned out he knew about the AGS community and had played Larry Vales.

The closest thing i ever have is when explaining that I make adventure games, once in a blue moon someone says, "Like Monkey Island"?  I say yes and then have to explain how I'm a big nerd making games that preteens played a couple decades ago.

A few years ago I was at MoCCA [a big indie comics convention] and I met Ryan North from Qwantz.com, I gave him some of my comics and he emailed me later thanking me and telling me that he's played 6 Day Assassin well before meeting me. It was pretty awesome!

No, but I've had Adventure game encounters.

I once met a Finnish boy who was a big fan of Gabriel Knight and other adventure games. He was reading the novel when I asked if he played the game. And we talked about adventure games and such.

Then my best friend recently revealed to me that Torrin's Passage is one of his favorite games, and that he was a big fan of Quest for Glory games. That was cool.

That sounds coool, Blackthorne! Bet it's most trippy when that happens, but I bet you get a very warm feeling inside  ;D The only similar experience to that was when we met Ron Gilbert, a few of the people there I didn't know had heard of Fountain of Youth - which was nice.

At a 2005 new years party, I was stumbling around a random house & a chick came up to me and said, "Are you Mark Lovegrove?" and I said "Yes" to which she said "Ohh my good! You're a media legend!!!!!" - that was strange but warming :P Something to do with seeing my stuff in my old school media rooms or something hehehe.

My mom claims she was in Victoria (capital of British Columbia) and she says she hears this dialog Woman "Oh, stop acting like Guybrush Threepwood!" Man "WHO?!?!" At least that's what she claims
As well I was at youth group party (it is amazing how much of an idiot on can make of oneself without alcohol) Watching pirates of the Caribbean. I said how funny it was the made a movie out of a themepark ride and how some guys had made a long time ago a computer game mostly based on the ride. And the guy knew exactly what I was talking about.  We got into a stupid discussion about monkey island and stufflike that. It was fun I guess.

A couple of months ago, I had an interview for an internship with Telltale Games, and Kevin Bruner asked me if I made my games with AGS. I was amused.

(In case you're curious, I did end up getting the job.)
Actually, I HAVE worked on a couple of finished games. They just weren't made in AGS.

Heh.  That's awesome.  There's just something surreal, however, when someone says to you in real life "Oh, you're Blackthorne?"  I mean, I don't think I've EVER even said that name outloud.  It's always been words on a screen to me.  I was totally surprised.  I mean, I often find people that know of adventure games, but rarely people who know of AGS.

Congratulations. Well, speaking of coincidences, I know why they asked you that question. You see, last year when I graduated from the U, I applied to Telltale and they were pretty interested. so I flew there and met a bunch of the guys (Kevin, of course, since he's the first who contacted me), learned about CSI (which was a huge secret back then and some of them were pissed about keeping it secret) and showed them some stuff (Saturday School, mostly). So that's how they know about AGS, because I kind of explained to them what it was all about. I didn't get the job probably for several reasons, including the fact that I wasn't prepared for the interview.

Anyway, I also met Jake Rodkin from Mixnmojo/Idle thumbs at that same time since he lives in the San Fran area. Anyway, he and Chris Remo (aka remixor) tried to make an AGS game once, but it was poorly planned and they weren't into it so they never got around to it.

Now, the only strange coincidence was when one day (this is about a year before I was introduced to AGS) one of my old Klik & Play buddies and I were chatting on the old #K&P channel and he said that he was leaving to go somewhere in Arkansas. as I live there and I was totally shocked that someone was coming this way, I asked him where he was going. Turns out there was a family reunion right in this city where I live, so I met him. It was kind of weird, because I was like 16 and he was like 12-13, ye it was still kind of cool.

The Inquisitive Stranger

Haha, Jake actually works at Telltale now, so I'll get to meet him too.

I myself had a phone interview, and I thought I did badly on it, but apparently I didn't. Maybe they're more lenient when it comes to interns or something. *shrugs*

MillsJROSS

I haven't met people in North Florida who've used AGS, yet. A few people have played adventure games, but that's the extent of my random meetings with people.

I tried to get an internship at Telltale, but they had just started and weren't taking applicants at the time.
