Title: Ever stuck in a real life situation that called for an adventure game solution?
Post by: Helm on Sat 26/03/2005 07:30:14
I have! Twice! Both cases involving a taxi driver. Anyway, this is the shorter, more interesting one:

I get in this cab, driven by the world's most obnoxious cabbie. He's swearing a lot, saying really creepy things to a teenage boy that was in the cab when I entered, and generally being very irritating. At some point, a passing car from the other lane hits his rear view mirror. The mirror part dislodges and falls to the ground outside. The cabbie, swearing profusely, gets out, and hastingly notes the other car's license plate number down on a piece of paper which he then places on the dashboard. He picks up the mirror, places it back to it's place, and it seems ok. He gets back in the car and he's mumbling to himself about how he's going to "fuck that guy" 'cause he's going to call the licence plates in and "find out where he lives" and "I'll show you, you cunt" and "you'll pay 300 euros for that"  and all that. Later on, the kid in front, majorly creeped out directs the cabbie to his house, which is just off the paved road, and on a bit of a difficult gravelly path. The cabbie gets him there anyway, the kid gets out, I move to the front. As he drives off to get me to my place, he starts saying more weird creepy and insulting things about that other kid, how he's afraid to walk a few meters from the paved road so he could have avoided the rubble, and how if he was his father, he'd gladly put him over his knee and spank him good and other such stuff. I have so far said nothing, but I've decided inside that this man should not get his way today. So I tell him to drop me off a road away from my house ( just to be careful ) and tell him if you could, my leg is kinda hurt and I can't carry this big bag I had with me, if he would be so kind to carry it just outside a nearby house. He mumbles a lot, but he does. As he gets out to circle the car over to my side, I quickly pocket the piece of paper with the licence plate number on it. I pay the man, get off and the cabbie leaves. I hear the 'bling!' noise and look up over at my score gui and see I've gotten two points out of 2345504.

So one timed puzzle for me, anything of the like has happened to you?

When I was seven years old, in first class, I farted in the middle of a very silent lesson. It was this kind of high-pitched, squeeking sound, just loud enough for everybody to start giggling and turn their heads in my direction.

By then, I had already produced my over-sized eraser, whose rubbery tip I forcefully rubbed against the surface of my desk.

Everybody went from a joyful excitement to a let down "oh". The teacher asked what everybody had been giggling about, and one pupil raised his arm and answered "we thought Petter was farting, but he was just rubbing the eraser against the desk."

Such a moment of instant clarity and ingenouity has never again struck me.

A lot of very little things have come to me...

Such like, I need to get a light by my bed, but there's no desk or anything (one of those balcony bed thingys...), and I had one of those lights that's attached to the edge of a table, by turning a screw under it, sortof. The solution was simple, I just place the attachment piece verticaly on the border of the bad and twist the lamp arm in a very weird agnle. Nothing too special.

Another one was that I have two single level desks, and I'd like to position my computer so that the keyboard is low enough and the screen is high enough that my working pose would be as natural as possible. Well, the solution was once again simple, I just put the lower desk under the higher one and put the keyboard and mouse on that, and the screen on the higher one.

Nothing too big, that I'd remember... ::)

EDIT: Aaaarghcannottype...

... Goddamned alley-way ninjas.

I've broken into my house many times with various sticks around my back yard...

Then my parents got new windows and they weren't as easy to break into... So then I was kinda stuck...

When I was in highschool I had a large jacket pocket full of random things, an army man, a plastic snake, a small key and lock, some crayons, various peices of paper, a long bit of string, etc... I would have totally been set if any ghost pirates tried to steal my girlfriend!

Just yesterday I killed a high-up, creepy-looking spider with  a mop/ shoe combo. It was very satisfying. So much so that I had almost started a thread just like this.

Oh snap! That reminds me of my greatest adventure game moment!

My friend and I were painting a house and there was a small bee hive under the lip of the roof and were like "EEEK! BEES!" and we ran around a little because we're pansies...

Then I took our ladder, set it up near the hive, tied a hose with a nozzle to the top rung, aimed it at the bees, locked the nozzle to ON and JET SPRAY. We ran back to the faucet the hose was hooked up too, hid behind some garbage cans and turned the faucet on full blast. It destroyed the hell out of the hive and all the bees inside it and we were able to continue painting in the 100 degree heat and get paid kind of ok for it...

um... Wee?

That reminds me of when my friend and I had to "break" into her house...
The puzzle was solved by:
1) Sliding the bench under the kitchen window
2) finding the hanger in the lawn and bend it to fit into the small opening
3) Stick hanger through opening to unlock window
4) Push window open
5) Climb through
6) Fall face first into a bowl of dog food on the Kitchen floor :P

One time, this hacker guy stole a big bunch of my friends' Hotmail accounts, changing the password and secret question, etc... He didn't get mine, but he made one mistake:

He stole my grilfriend's account.

For the next two hours, my girlfriend talked to him, befriended him, and eventually got the password he changed her account to. Thing was, it was the same password that he changed all my friends' accounts too, so I gave them all the password, and they all got their accounts back.

The way my girlfriend described the conversation with the hacker sounded very "dialog-puzzlish" to me. Like, from a LucasArts game or something.

My girlfriend once dropped a key out of a window and it landed on the roof below.

We made a fishing rod out of a Bug catcher, sellotape, a weight and a bent paperclip.

Needless to say, we were victorious!

I remember when my bro locked himself in his bedroom. We needed something to break the glass above the door so we could transfer items to each other. In the end we used a couple of screwdrivers and gained new items such as screws and the door handle. We had to remove it with the little screwdriver and then use the bigger screwdriver as handle. The problem was that the door is stuck on the floor and you have to push it hard to open it, so we needed one person to open it and the other to push on the right time. My brother opened it and I pushed the same time, and so we won.

One other time I saved two girls who got themselves stuck in the guys' bathrooms (don't ask me what they were doing there) because the door handle magically disappeared. I used a pair of scissors and past experience to open the door. But I didn't even get a thank you, because they started fighting about whose fault it was they were in there.

I'm sure there were other cases as well, but that's all I can remember for now

A friend of mine blew the fuses on a holiday house we were staying at by jamming the cord from the kettle in the electric sandwich maker - this happened at the exact same time as a complete blackout of Melbourne (co-oincidence?) - It was also in the middle of Melrose Place so . .disaster. It was our last day so we dropped the keys off and were all set to go home when myfriend had a crisis of conscience and wanted to return to the house to get the exploded kettle so no one would know what had happened. The door was locked but I succeded in getting the kettle by doing the following.

You know... I have once to see a front door that has had a space under the door big enough to pull a key through. But that's a classic adventure game puzzle right there.

Today, on physics lesson, I needed to observe the temprature of some hot water in three diffrent containers. The problem was that the thermometers were so long that they tipped the containers overof just fell out of them. So I used a small box to build a support for each one, and positioned the boxes to support each other so the thermometers wouldn't tip them over. And the structure held until teh task was done. No water spillt on the table, and, suprise, nothing broken...

I once had to live out an adventure game puzzle, breaking into my own house afrer forgetting my key that morning when I left. I have four windows: mine and my sister's, which are very high off the ground, a center four-paned picture window with the front porch underneath to let me get into it, and my TV room window, which was accessible. Needless to say, the picture window wasn't large enough for me to fit through, so I tried the TV room window. That window wasn't large enough for me to fit through, so I of course went to my own window (or my sister's, it wouldn't have mattered), since it was big enough for me to fit through, but too high to reach.

So I searched my backyard and found a bucket. It was too small to reach the window, so I combined it with some bricks in the front yard for landscaping stuff. I stacked the bricks one by one under the window, then put the bucket on it. I reached the window...and it was locked. But it was a latch that could only be unlocked from the inside, no questions asked. Red herring puzzle!

I then realized that the TV room window...was right next to one of my front doors. There were two windows near my door, side by side, but the one closest to the door had a screen covering it...the farther one didn't. So I pried open the farther window using a tire iron from my car. I then reached inside, over to the next window and opened it. Still reaching over, I knocked out the screen and let it fall. I then reached into the closer window and unlocked the door from the inside, and presto! I was in!

That was the only puzzle I never needed a walkthrough for. :p

Back in high school, I was volunteering at Habitat for Humanity with my friends.  That day we had been assigned to set up sheet rock walls for the house interior.  Right before lunch, my friend and I were kind of goofing around, and somehow I ended up making a rather large hole in the sheet rock with a hammer.

Naturally, we freaked out.  I mean what are the people going to say when they see the volunteers are destroying houses rather than building them?  So, I picked up a board that was on the ground and placed it inconspicuously in front of the hole as a temporary solution.

At that point, we took a break for lunch.  I was scrambling for ideas on how to fix the hole.  We went to a supermarket nearby to get some sandwiches, and I noticed that they were having a promotion from a local radio station, involving a wheel to spin for prizes.  I decided to test my luck and gave the wheel a spin.  I won a free bumper sticker from the radio station.

Suddenly, in true adventure game fashion, I got a brilliant idea.  "We can use the bumper sticker to patch up the hole!"  So we raced back to the construction site, I USED bumper sticker ON hole, and covered it up nicely.  I'm sure someone found out about it later, but it was pretty funny at the time.

The other day I was playing Simon the sorcerer when I realized I needed to go feed our chickens. So I went out there and after finishing the job I realized the pole which I use to hold the door shut after I left had fallen over onto the door and I couldn't get out. I yelled for help and tried breaking down the door but this didn't work. So I did what any adventure gamer would do and used my brain. Finding a hook attached to the wall, I used pushed it through the crack in the door and knocked the pole out of the way. I thought this was very amusing because I never thought that could help me in real life.
Has anything like this ever happened to you?

there was this door but it was locked so i PICKED UP the key and then I USED IT on the door and then I gave a sort of narrative about random items that I found when LOOKING AT them. I also PICKED UP everything that wasn't nailed down, but I got arrested and instead of pleading innocence, I outsmarted the guard using a paperclip and the small bowl that was used as a toilet. On my way out there was a guard dog that I distracted by USING the ham that I had found on the table in the prison and I left the area and went home.

Yea i had to break into my own house after forgetting my keys,
I went around the back garden in search of something to open the door with.
I found a plant which was reasonably strong but bendy stalk.
I used it to  put through the letterbox and pull the latch down and finally i got in

I generally find that items are more versatiile than games would have me think.

Like if I need to reach something. You don't need a broom with a hook. A bottle will work. So will a rope. So would a whipping action from a jumper or something.

I have some experienses too. Like this one. I was lying on my bed trying to fall asleep, but the problem was, the tv was on and loud, and the lights were on. So I had to stand up and turn them off and then walk back to bed and avoid steppin gon stuff int he dark. So next day I managed to aquire a long stick, or one of those wooden panelings you use where the floor meets the wall. So that night I poked my tv off with the stick and then it even reached to the lightswitch, so I was able to happily fall asleep. I then realised that with this stick I was able to do these things even from in front of my computer so I didn't have to move more than from bed to here and back. Awesome. THen my mom took it away and I started using my hockey stick.

The other time was when I was awake very late in my new house, and decided to go to bed. but apparently the toilet door had been shut for ages, and locked. So I tried my key to the small square hole. It was too small, so I went to my room, found my scissors and managed to spin the lock open. Then I found some guy, who I believe was a friend of my roommate, passed out on the floor. So I picked up my apparell, went to the other room to wash up and then to bed.

Haha, careful don't give them ideas.

Nah, I just meant reaching/dragging/hooking with the bottle alone. It's moreso the puzzle faced by the lazy man than an actual puzzle, but still.

Here's when my adventure game skills really worked out for the best:

I left my bag to talk to my classmates about some things (which I couldn't remember). Now, my mum's camera was left in that bag. Seeing that I was in school and all, I didn't expect anyone to steal it. Lo and behold, someone did.

The evening came and I had an idea that it was one of my classmates. No, I don't write down my suspects on a sheet of paper for that would just make me blasphemous; I use a computer. I had a week to plan my next move...

The week came by and my plan was developing. I let my close friends in with the details. And now, I shall share them with you.

MY PLAN:
1. Do not, at any circumstance, talk about anything stolen.
2. Pretend everything is all right.
3. When the suspect shows signs of guilt, proceed with acts.

Here was the result: my suspected classmate left my mum's camera on a rack at the back of our classroom. I called out one of my friends to carry a huge box to cover me while I get the camera. I then slipped the camera in my pocket. We pretended nothing happened.

The suspect, full of guilt, asked me if I got something from the back. I said no. He was starting to sound really nervous.

To cut the rest of the story short, he gave in. He was sanctioned and I got my camera back. Looks like the guy couldn't stand the mystery of the disappearing camera (or his guilt).  ;D

I had to break into my old terraced house once when I locked the keys inside. Here was my walkthrough:

Remember left kitchen window at back of house open. Can't get to back of house, since in middle of terrace. Go to neighbour's house, ask if can climb over back wall in garden. Climb over wall, get into my back garden. Find kitchen window open, but it is a louvre window with glass slats. Remove glass slats from plastic surrounds. Slice back of thumb open with glass as it pops out. climb in through window, let wife in through front door then find bandage for thumb.

I still have the scar...

I once used a old bucket of water to put out a dragon's flames and gain a piece of treasure for some place called Daventry. Long ago though, my memory travels sometimes.

I know this thread is rather old and dusty but I can't be bothered to create a new thread for the same topic. That's too much work...what with the naming of the thread...and everything. ::)

I've recently moved in (temporarily) with my mom's ex-husband (the man I call "dad" despite how much I wish I didn't have to; but that's another story). Tonight I went to visit with some friends for a while and I let him know before I go. He asked if I have to work tomorrow.

I let him know that I do. He advised me not to stay out too late. Of course not. But it was a nice gesture anyway. I came home and the house was locked up, he having gone to bed.

Well that's simple enough! He gave me a copy of the key. Use key on door. Click. Aha--?

So the deadbolt is locked. I don't have a key for that. So then, use key on back door. Click. Please--dangit.

Pull window screen. That doesn't seem to work. Use key on screen. It won't fit between the frame and the screen. Use other key on screen. Yes! Pull screen--dangit. The screen is still hung up and won't come out.

Use key on different screen. Okay so far so good. Pull screen. Nope.

Hold screen. Use key on different portion of screen. Finally! Pull screen out. Done. Climb in through window. Open back door. Replace screen.

Perhaps not the most eventful but it did make me kinda think of adventure games where the most obvious and straightforward solution may not ultimately be the one you need to advance the storyline. :=

I hadn't back in 2005 when this thread was started but now...

Well, a couple of years ago I was on holiday with my family in Italy and my dad knocked a wing-mirror off our rental car, it was my idea to tie it back on with a plastic bag off the side of the road.
Not the most complex of puzzles but it felt totally adventure-gamey at the time. I was glowing, man. GLOWING.

Hahaha...far too many of these real life puzzles seem to involve breaking into something.
I thought I had posted in this thread back when, but I guess I imagined it all....my story too is of the breaking into house variety. The house was locked, but I had a pair of handy-dandy pliers in the car. So what did I do? I undid all the nuts that were attaching my window bars to my window, lifted off the whole frame and jumped in.

...then I had to screw it all back in before anyone noticed :=.
Scary how easy it is to break into a house undetected.

Weird this thread should resurface today, just last night I got linked to this -  http://thereifixedit.com/  (http://thereifixedit.com/) - which is essentially a blog of real-life "combine-item" solutions to problems. :)

That was sort of my sentiment the whole time I was burglarizing my way into what presently serves as my own home. Most of the time we don't leave the windows open so I actually lucked out there.

I probably wouldn't have been able to wake him.

But yup, with the window opened (or unlocked even) it's just a simple matter of leverage getting that pesky screen out of the way.

I needed to pull some computer cables through a small hole in the back of my desk so I fashioned a hooky device from a coat hanger.  Worked great, too.  In fact, it made me

GAIN A LEVEL!  I am now a level 2 handyman.

Long live?

Fuck it.

There was a real life adventure game puzzle that my daughter (1 year old at the time) had solved last year at the super market, but I can't be arsed to remember what it was. But it was great puzzle solving nonetheless.

I just remembered the time I locked the keys in (the ignition of) my parent's extended cab pickup truck. Brilliantly all the windows were shut tight except the passenger-side back window which was really just a flap that had the opening toward the rear of the vehicle.

So I searched through my inventory (the bed of the truck) and this is what I had: a stick and a couple of worn out pieces of bungee strap.

Talk to: passers-by.

cMonkey.AddInventory(iWireHanger);

Talk to: security guard.

cMonkey.AddInventory(iMetalRod);

Okay so now I had the best possible key grabbing device I could manage. I'd used the bungee straps to tie together the stick, the metal rod, and the wire hanger which was of course straightened (except the actual hook). And I was feeding this through the approximately two inch gap that I had to work with, up over the center console between the driver and passenger front seats, up to where the ignition switch was at (along with my keys).

A bit of clever maneuvering later and I had brilliantly tossed the keys directly into the center of the passenger side seat. >:(

A bit more clever maneuvering, hanger bending, and talking to the now off-duty security guard and we were able to eventually hook the keys and feed them out the window (though I'm honestly still not sure how; and surprised we got it after I stupidly launched it into the worst possible location (except the glove box of course :P)).

In any case that 4 hour extravaganza was in fact rather wonderful and adventurey. :=

spilled cola once over my laptop. I immediatly took out the keyboard (which are really thin) put it under  a copy machine so I knew where all the keys went, got a plastic coffee spoon from the schools kitchen, disassembled all the keys with said spoon  (which had a tiny hinge system inside them, a 150 in total i believe it was) cleaned up the (luckily flexible)  circuit board of the keyboard. And then put everything back together with the help of the photocopy I made earlier.

And it all worked out just fine. Usually cola means a certain death for your keyboard.

Nothing special -- but last week, I got a piece of peanut from Snickers bar stuck between my teeth at work and it drove me crazy, so all kind of adventure-gameish solutions were tried to remove it:

improvised toothpicks of

* straightened paperclip (my 1st choice usually, but didn't work)
* straightened staple (almost worked)
* straightened spring from broken lighter (do not suggest)

Since it didn't work much, also, improvised floss was used, made of

* edge of standard copier paper (too soft: it got wet & damaged too quickly)
* edge of 290g Metalprint carton (too hard: my gum started to bleed)
* a piece of string which I got by sabotaging my jacket collar (finally worked)

...I really should buy some toothpicks and put into my work desk drawer  :-X

That photocopy idea is brilliant, as both a real-life solution and as an adventure game puzzle solution. ;D

I went outside, closed the door... and forgot my keys. Outside I saw my neighbor and asked for help. He told me it's easy the crack the door open without damaging it with a plastic card and pliers. Well, I found both items on the roof and it really worked.

Helme, maybe you can help me. I'm stuck at the same part except the neighbor doesn't seem to be any where around. What do I have to do to trigger this event?

I've walked around the house and interacted with everything, but to no avail. All I get are descriptions like, "It's the front door to my house. It's locked.", "That doesn't work.", "I can't do that with my bare hands.", "There's no reply.", "What would I do with it?" and "Bitching to yourself is a sign of madness.".

I currently have: My wallet, an acorn, a dime, a hot pocket, a pogo stick, a dirty sock, the anvil from upstairs and the extention cord from the garage. I've tried all these items on the other neighbors cat, but it keeps running away. Where is this neighbor you speak of??!1 Do I even have to do anything with the cat?

And why can't I pick up the pliers from the toolbox? I've got a goddamn anvil for christ sakes and I can't take the pliers before I talk to the neighbor??

Thanks in advance,

Ahhh, that old problem... here's how you do it:
Spoiler

First attach the sock to the stick. Use the extension cord on the cat to drive him away, then quickly close the gate so it doesn't return. Then you can put the sock in the neighbor's backyard with the stick (if the cat was there it would have taken it).
Now go to another place (say, the local bar, you can use the anvil there if you want but that's for another puzzle so I won't get into it) and return, the neighbor will be there, trying to figure out the source of the smell, and then you can talk to him...

About the toolbox, in order to open the toolbox you'll need the pliers...

Oh wait a minute, the pliers are in the toolbox? Something is not right here, probably a bug, you should try to restart...

Well, come to find out, I couldn't get on the roof without combining the extention cord with the cat and using the cat as a counter weight to get me up there. I forgot I was playing a comedy. Thanks guys!

This morning I SEARCHED my pocket for my KEY, and then I USED KEY on DOOR, and then I clicked HAND on DOOR to make sure it was locked.

My life is such an adventure.

I just used filters on papers and then tobacco on papers to create a new inventory item, called a cigarette. Now I'll use a lighter on it. Now that's some tricky stuff.

Most of it are really cheap workarounds, but there's some pretty ingenious stuff there, too.

Edit: Damn. :) Never mind this post then.

My bedroom is tiny and I don't have space for a bedside table on which to put my lamp.  I do have a series of shelves above my bed, but unfortunately my lamp is too large to fit on any of them... so what I did was dangle my lamp upside down, hanging it by the base on the lowest shelf, and used a copy of the Beginner's Guide to DarkBASIC (which I never use) to hold it in place...

Not the most exciting puzzle, perhaps, nor the most ingenious solution.  And I couldn't think of any witty Stobbartesque remark to go with the moment, but as an adventure gamer I live for situations like that.

A couple of months ago I was at my mate's party which got out of hand at the end, and resulted in the cistern in the bathroom being ripped off the wall. With me being the resident great bloke/handyman, I wound up being the one who had to fix it. I had my toolkit there, so I didn't have any trouble re-attatching it to the wall, but it still kept leaking. With no plumbing experience thus far, it became a real trial-and-error experience, resuting in:

Emptying the cistern so it wasn't too heavy for the screws before they got a proper hold on the wall,
Finding that it would just fill up again,
Tracing the pipes to the tap in the corner of the bathroom,
Turning off the water,
Emptying the cistern again
Attatching it to the wall
Fitting the pipes to the bowl
Still leaks
Taking out the buoyancy-seal for better access to where it was leaking
Trying to shove the rubber seal into the connection where it was leaking
Still leaks
Finding another, sneaky component that looked like it couldn't be removed, but could, allowing the seal to be placed inside it,
Fitting it all together again in the correct order,
Receiving much praise that I saved the cost of hiring a plumber.

The whole time I was doing it, I just felt like I was in one of those one room games, and I had all the inventory items at my disposal, and it was just a matter of fiiting them together the right way.

At my old school our science labs and computer rooms used to get locked before school and at break times, which meant if you were early to class (or more frequently if your teacher was late) you had to stand in the corridor waiting. Our form room was a lab and we often had to wait 15-20 minutes before we could go in for registration. I noticed that - presumably for fire safety reasons - if you pulled the handle of one of these locked doors from inside the lab the door would unlock. I also noted the half-centimetre gap between the door and door frame. At about this time we were doing a series of experiments in physics on the resistive properties of different lengths of wire...

I'd got my wire threaded through the gap and looped around the inner door handle when the lab technician walked past.
