Title: "Extremely short" Posts
Post by: Nacho on Mon 17/11/2003 12:02:35
Hi people:

I am observing that a famouls old member of this community (A person who I am proud to say that is my friend) is making extremely shorts posts.

I am not going to say who he is, but I think that increasing the posting figures with sentences like just a "w00t!", "fruity poops" or "You´re my hero" is not fair in the sense that posts like that are not contributing to the community.

The problem is that taking a look to his latest 10 or 20 posts you see that most of that posts are just one sentence posts. I am not compling when people sometimes use a smiley or use a interjection to give rythim to a thread, but doing it usually seems IMHO a little... n00b.

Sometimes some of us are giving too much importance to the posting figures... I preffer "substanced" post rather than that relater before.

Now... you people can do what you want with this post, like sending me to Hell, or crushing me for behave as an administrator!  ;D

So...  what you're saying... perhaps boasting about is..  Your posts are bigger than his?

Yes, most of them are so much longer than that, in fact, my weekly posting average is 15, because I try to explain myself clearly, and I select quite well which topics are interesting for me. Please don´t missunderstood me, I´m not attacking nobody, just telling that a change of attitude should be great IMHO, but if nobody wants to change it, it really won´t matter.

Bye!

Edit: In response to your question, my average number of lines in the latest 10 post has been 7,5, whereas the average of the poster I´m talking about has been 2.

And most of these lines are coposed by one word or two.

That's a good observation, Farlander. However, if it's only one guy who's making the short posts - perhaps you could have just send him a notification as a private message. I think posting here would be necessary only if lots of people are doing it, as was the case at one point. Fortunately a long time ago.

Relax, Farlander, if you're gonna keep counting your average number of sentences per post, you're gonna end up feeling really bored about posting.

Pessi:

Heh... I didn´t tell the name because I´ve observed it in more than one member, and I used that "extremely" short sentences as an example... I wrote this because sometimes I think that a "how to post rules" revisiting by everybody is needed (Included me).

AGA: You´re very smart AGA... Now Remixor will crucify me :).

Andail: Yes, I counted my average lines, but only because Yaksplit was wondering if it was me a "short posts person" critizising "short posts people" :).

Please notice that there are some posts, short ones, that do not annoy me. For example, Yaksplit asked me something in one sentence, and after that he posted "Heh". That´s hasn´t annoyed me because that question was necessary, and that "Heh" was ok because it was in response to something that AGA said, sometimes that short posts make the discussion easier to read and more fluid. What I don´t see ok is to fill the "Long overdue post" with posts like "Nice photo" or "Cool!" after each pic. In that way we get a topic about photos with 7 photos and 7 replies saying " :o"...

Maybe the bandwith problem is something of the past, but constructing "easy to read" topics with that, let´s say, that "interferences posts", is difficult.

BTW, feel free that if you haven´t seen that problems before, or that this discussions about imporving in the posting style are out of place, make me know, and "I´ll go fishing"  ;D.

Thanks for the quick replies and your kindly exposure of your opinnions!

You better believe it.  You're going to Mittens, right?  Maybe I'll see you there...

Just kidding ;)

Or am I?  >:(

Haha, just kidding!  ;D

Or am I!?  >:(

No, no, seriously, just kidding. :)

FRUITY POOPS!

Seriously though, I'll take your points into consideration.  I don't think most people mind short posts, but I will still be more conscious of it (but bear in mind, the chit-chat forum is just that: chit-chat).  I'm not just trying to increase post count or anything--if I was, I could easily post a lot more--it's just that often times I feel only a short post is warranted.  I've certainly posted my share of overly-verbose messages on these boards.  Anyway, thanks for the heads up. :)

Packing up an arsenal just to crucify him? Surely all you need is a hammer, some nails and some wood?

Person A: Please, don't do this!

Person B: *does that!* LOL!

Am I the only one who think that joke has gotten veeery old lately?

I think Farlander has a point.

I'm not telling jokes -- My single posts merely act as emphasis to Farlander's point.

Oh, who am I kidding?

Farlander, maybe it'd have worked better if you'd asked them not to write long posts...

He had it coming...

Not even CJ would be spared ironic remarks after such a plea.

Remember when DG asked people to stop starting word-games? Few people took heed.

Moreover, this comes in periods. Sometimes older members get too tired to form eloquent posts each time, and still want to express their presence.
For me, getting a reply by e.g Butcher that is just one line plus a smiley would be appreciated, since it shows he approves, and that he's still among us.

Every time I think our forum is getting less mature, I just visit some other forum on the Internet and watch these endless chains with just "lolorz" and " ;D ;D ;D " replies.

So that's it. There will be times when AGS will experience less serious conversations, and there will be times when the forums are filled to the brink with tedious ramblings on pretentious subjects that will render you headache.

Hear hear, Andail!

I think there's some truth to saying that these things are rather cyclical.  A look at my overall post history would definitely show some periods of generally quite long post length.  I'm sure those days will come again...

Besides, we hear Farlander loud and clear -- doesn't mean we can't do it with a bit of jest.

Well... Thanks for taking this in a mature way. We´ve made a nice theory about the cycles in AGS, about n00bs, old members...

And now... Here is my attempt to make longer posts:
