I am a great fan of horror movies, of any kind, and I wonder what the world thinks about.
What's your favorite?

I personally think Coppola's DRACULA as the best ever. THE SHINING and THE SIXTH SENSE are also of my favorites.

All though I am not a big fan of scarry movies from the ones I have seen I think Chucky 1 is the best. When the soul of the murderor goes in to the doll. The atmosphere is wery creppy in that sceene.  :P :-X

I think we had this thread before but it was a long time ago ...

Anyway.

For me, a true horror movie isn't one that just scares you with sudden loud noises or a scary bad guy.Ã,  It's more of a movie where you don't know what's real and what's not and you find yourself in a VERY uncomfortable/creepy situation.Ã,  Or even a movie that just gives you goosebumps can be 'horror' to me.

Jacob's Ladder - maybe one of the most creepy/eerie movies I've ever seen.
Signs - The part where he sees the alien on the barn out his daughter's window ... I couldn't look out a window, at night, for weeks!

Movies like that are more horror movies to me.

Movies like Freddy, Jason, and Chucky it's like, "Oh, another bad guy.Ã,  Wow, I sure am scared."Ã,  They just don't frighten me ... they rather bore me.

People always laugh at me when I say this, but the movie Fight Club actually scares the shit out of me!Ã,  That you can be that lost in your own twisted reality ... now that's some horror shit right there.

Evil clown! Whoof, that Stevie King...Gotta side with Puddin' on this one:

IT

I remember Sky One showing IT when i was about 5 or so, man i was scared for weeks! when the kids paper boat goes down the drain... :(

Skio

IT? Are you sure?

I have seen it and I think it is the second worst Stephen King movie (the first is Tommyknockers).
I have also read the book and I found it BRILLIANT!

The movie doesn't follow the book at all: It discards some of the best scenes and replaces them with some bad ones (the showers scene, for example).

Have you seen Sleepwalkers?  Might change your mind :)

Jacob's Ladder WAS awsome. It's one of those ones I try to tell anybody who will listen to see it.

Another horror movie that was pretty creepy was the first Hellraiser film.

And even though a lot of people really didn't much like it, I thought that Event Horison had some really great horror moments in it, too.

Then there's the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was a truly excellent horror flick.

And though it shared an awful lot in common with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, House of 1000 Corpses was pretty darn good for the fact that it was so darn chaotic and crazy.

The Thing (the John Carpenter version) is way up there, too. Awsome.

And one can't forget the first and third Exorcist movies, either (DO NOT see the second one, unless you're REALLY wanting to see a terrible movie).

Other worthy mentions:
-The People Under the Stairs
-Dreamcatcher
-Prince of Darkness (it was dumb, but I really liked it)
-The Prophesy

Finally, I'd be ashamed if I didn't mention The Night of the Living Dead (all versions, really, though some are better than others), and Dawn of the Dead (both versions), which are some of my favorite movies ever. George Romero is a god (excet for the fact that he had anything to do with Day of the Dead, that is).

I know there's more good stuff I'm forgetting, too...

Evil Dead has to be up there at the top for scary movies.. Evil Dead 2 was more of a funny movie, but I guess it still counts as a horror movie..

The Romero Dead films are quite teh scary..

I rarely get scared at films.. So, yea..

But, I'm gonna say it now that the new Silent Hill movie will be ultra creepy!!

And I'm sorry.. But TCM is really not all that great of a movie It's all screamign! :-p hehe.. I wanna see the sequels, though. The 4th one looks GREATLY BAD! :)

Well, as far as Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original... I didn't much like the remake) goes, I liked it because of some of the creepier parts:

-Leatherface slamming the sliding door shut
-Leatherface grabbing the girl and hauling her back into the house
-All the running
-The killers' often seemingly aloof attitude, as if they're doing what they're doing as ROUTINE

Yeah, there proabbaly was a lot of screaming in there, too... but I don't remmeber it nearly as vividly as any of the things I mentionned above.

Oh well. We all like different things, I guess.  ;)

Heh, I didn't think of Evil Dead!  Most definatley #1.

Don't get me wrong, I still like TCM.. I just don't think it's OMGLIEKTEHBESTMOVIEEVA!~

Agreed. I think some people blow its value way out of proportion. Of course, I feel that way about a lot of the more recent horror movies out there, too (i.e., since Scream came out and "revitalized" the genre). Its as if peopel are so starved for a great horror movie that any good one that comes along is hailed as incredible, or something. (You often know a horror film is going to be bland when go and compare it to the Exorsist [which is another movie that, IMO, wasn't all it was cracked up to be).

In the "ones I missed" department:

For what it was (very low budjet, and based almost entirely on character development), I thought Cube was pretty darn swell.

And in another nod to Canadian content, "Ginger Snaps" was alright, I guess (part 2 wasn't as good, though).

As far as actual "scary" movies are concerned, my favorite is definitely Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". I also liked Carpenter's "The Thing", too. And since Darth mentioned a movie that scared him yet is not usually considered "scary", I have to mention Memento. While watching that movie, I tried to imagine how my life'd be if I had the same problem, now that's scary!

I absolutely loved Jacob's Ladder, but I wouldn't call it a "horror" movie, it's eerie, unsettling, but not really horror, IMO. Still, it's fantastic film. Also, as much as I love the Evil Dead trilogy, I wouldn't call them horror either. Well, the first one kinda is, but it's still too silly for me to call it that.

IT was pretty good for a Stephen King book - to movie kinda thing. I've seen so many bad straight-to-video movies based on King's books, it's not even funny. :P

(edit) Skio, this month's Sinema magazine is giving away the Sixth Sense (which is a very good movie, by the by) on DVD! Though I kinda think you already know this. :P

Nightmare on Elmstreet series.

For me, a great horror movie has to be bed-wettingly scary (so something like The 6th Sense or Bram Stoker's Dracula, though good films, are out), but also be a high-quality film in general (which excludes IT and most serial killer movies).

Some films that achieve both:

The Shining
Alien
The Brood
Ringu (The Ring)

Harvester

Well, if I can really really REALLY mention only one movie (as the title of the thread suggests), then I'll go with THE OMEN. Totally creepy from the beginning till the end, disturbing music, and some truly frightening scenes (Billie Whitelaw's eyes before killing Lee Remick, the very last scene, etc.).
There's also this fantastic, but less known, movie called SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT (not to be confused with Silent Night, DEADLY Night), I recommend everyone to see it.
None shall pass!
