Anybody know about domain registration and subdomains?

My site, xylot.com, is gone for God-knows-how-long thanks to a corporate takeover of my web host, who had also taken care of my domain name registration. To make a long story short, now some German company apparently handles it and won't respond to my [English] emails.

Anyway, I'm going to register www.xylot.net now and just start over (which isn't too big of a deal for me). Thing is, I want to register the domain name separately from the web host (in case this happens again, or I find a cheaper web host than the one I have, but still want my domain name). i've been looking into Yahoo! for my domain name and maybe OneDollarHost.net for web hosting.

Anyway, how would subdomains work? If I have xylot.net point to the IP address of my web site, then how would I go about setting up subdomains (like bts.xylot.net or themes.xylot.net? Would that be on the part of the domain registrar, or the web host?

That's the Web host's responsibility; not the domain name registrar's; look for the number of subdomains the host you can sign up with offers.

As far as cheap Web hosts go, I found I'd rather pay extra than deal with the frustration of poor service.  I'm paying $15 for what's now considered to be a very poor package - 50MB web space; 5GB monthly transfer, Telnet-only admin interface, no subdomains - but I've been getting an uptime guarantee, e-mail support within 60 minutes and full stability for the past six years.

See, what I need from a web host is uptime -- Incognito Networks was utter shit at having my web site available all the time -- and fast FTP uploads (IN was crap at that, too). I also need quite a bit of bandwidth.

I've decided to go with Yahoo! for web hosting. $8.95 for each of the first two months, $11.95 for each month thereafter, and I trust Yahoo! as their site is great with uptime and speed -- I've been told to ping them when testing out my wireless router before.

Thanks, Jozef!

Why don't you check up with AGA and scotch and see if they can sort you some webspace? Afterall it's unlimited bandwidth. Then just buy a domain name cheap. No idea about the bts.xylot etc though :(

This should help you talk to the ol' foreigners:

OK!

In english:

QuoteIf I have xylot.net point to the IP address of my web site, then how would I go about setting up subdomains (like bts.xylot.net or themes.xylot.net? Would that be on the part of the domain registrar, or the web host?

And just to check, back to English again:

QuoteIf I xylot.net point for the IP address of my web site has, then as I over subdomains setting up would go (as bts.xylot.net or themes.xylot.net? On the part of would area be the registrar of births, marriages and deaths or the net landlord?

Hmmm... maybe not such a good idea.

Babelfish is not so hot for communicating with the "ol' foreigners."  I mean, it doesn't even have an "American to English" option.

Or, if you want to type less:
http://babelfish.av.com/

Speaking of domains, the story behind why altavista has an av.com registered is because back in the day when Yahoo! was definitely kicking their ass (this is before Google, guys), the guys at altavista were obviously wondering why in the world was this happening, even though altavista had redesigned their site to be a lot like yahoos and it even did better searches, apparently. One of the execs looked at his kid browsing, who was using Yahoo! and asked him why he was using it. His reponse was basically that yahoo was 1) easier to spell, and 2) it had less letters than altavista.com. But it was too late by then.

Guess what. Altavista is now owned by Yahoo! I'm sure there is a marketing moral involved somwhere.

I would recommend GoDaddy.com, it's what everyone I know uses to register domain names, and they're pretty good for just registering domain names. It might have subdomains options available, I know that Register.com does, if you want them to steal your money. But if Register does, then GoDaddy must.

voh

GoDaddy.com is awesome. I've got 6 domain names with them, and they've never failed me.

Hostgator.com is equally awesome, because I've got a reseller hosting account with them, have had for 2 years, and host 16 domains there and have never, EVER had a major problem or noticable downtime. They rock so hard it's painful.

Their cheapest plan is 6.95 a month and has 3.5 gigs of space and 50 gigs of BW, but only a 99.5% uptime guarantee. The next one is 9.95 a month and has 5/75 gigs in space/bw, but 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Both are good options :)
Still here.

Rule number one in webhosting: don't get your domain from the same company that does your hosting.

Anyway, regardless of who you register domains with, a domain should always be in your name anyway. Most companies that sell domain names are simply resellers, for organisations like eNom or Opensrs and others, so if the company that registered your domain name goes under you should be able to go ELSEWHERE to get it sorted out.

If the domain is in your name you can always, maybe sometimes with a little trouble, get things sorted out.

That said, domain registras I would recommend are: 000domains.com, namecheap.com, powerpipe.com, godaddy.com.

Since you have hosting now, I will assume that you have figured out the subdomain issue. This is basically a function of your hosts control panel though. Most decent control panels let you create and use these to your hearts content without any kind of difficulty. You can, however, have a subdomain point to an IP at another host.

It helps for spreading the bandwidth out a little...
