My brother with whom I live has decided to get a cat. I'm not going to object, I love them, I'm just concerned it might eat one of the many electrical cables in the house.
Anyhow, he's useless at coming up with names, and since he's soon to become a mother, I've been making suggestions myself - Chairman Meow, Garkov (http://joshmillard.com/garkov/), Jess (what can I say, I liked Postman Pat!), and other things. What would *you* fine folk call a cat? What have you called yours?
My cat's called Tang, because he comes from a family with drink and food-related named cats :P
None of the cats I ever lived with (5 cats at max, of which 4 were tiny wee kittens) chewed cables, but I may have been lucky :)
I have recently wished to name a cat Count Fluffykins the Destroyer, but I am sure that this is a name with limited appeal.
Not only have cats ruined multiple pairs of headphones for me with their cord chewing prowess, they also have a tendency to fight video game characters on the screen, as though they were hunting a mouse. Hilarious until they step on the keyboard and press on arrow keys with their ferocious paws.
If I had a cat, I'd name it Brad Esposito (http://www.adultswim.com/video/index.html?section=Other&collectionID=8a2505951b981e52011b9962aed60021).
My cat is called Ninja Balls. None of the 9 cats we've had in about 30 years have ever chewed cables though.
Schrödinger?
My cat is called Sugar.
She's the most beautful thing in the world.

She has never chewed a cable.
We had cats that did chew wires, but there's a product of some kind you can spray on your wires that cats don't like, so they don't play with it.
I like to give them human names like "Steve", something that's one or two syllables. It's not creative, I know...but I'm waiting to name my children cat names so that there's an equilibrium.

I don't think you'll have a problem with electrical cords. Get a package of those little catnip mouse toys for him/her to play with. It's also to invent other sorts of toys for your new cat. They love newspapers, paper grocery bags, cardboard boxes, etc. Just cut a few holes in the bag/box or toss a mouse toy under a newspaper and let nature take it's course. Cats love a challenge. For my little girl I bought a bag of plastic lizards at the Dollar Store. I would hide them all around the house so that she could find and hunt them.
Cats are very easy to train but you must have patience. They do not respond the same ways dog do and negative incentives or punishments will get you nowhere. We currently have four and if I let them know what I want they will usually comply because they want to please me. Unlike a dog, a cat will not enslave himself to you but he will be a loyal companion to you if you treat him as an equal.
It's very easy to train a cat to come when you whistle. Whenever you feed them, give them a treat, or do something fun, just start whistling like a fool. After awhile they will come running whenever you whistle.
As for names how about one of the following:
- Byte
- George or Lenny (al la "Of Mice and Men")
- Tesorro
- The diminutive form of any Spanish word (actual or made-up word)
Just remember to treat the newest member of your family with kindness and patience and you will be handsomely rewarded.

Chairman Meow is great! On that note: Kitler, or Mousewitz?
My cats never ate a cable in their life either. They do scratch up my PC chair though, and they love digging up the carpets.
He should look into getting/rescuing a burmese. They are such great cats, they live for cuddles and attention and warmth. My little Raz climbs under the duvet with me at night, and goes to great lengths to obtain cuddles. He also tries to climb under my clothes for warmth, which looks kinda perverse but is actually sweet.
He's a great big softy and thick as a plank :)
Also Siamese are great, though if you do get one I'd recommend buying one from a breeder and not a rescue cat. I've heard lots of people tell me that Siamese are highly strung, aloof cats, but most of these people have met or heard of cats that were rescued and therefore had been abused or abandoned at some point in their lives. My Siamese was bought from a very loving breeder who pampered her kittens, and she is just theee best cat. She follows me around the house quietly, sitting close by me wherever I am. Sometimes she'll have a little meow-conversation with me. She loves cuddles, and she loves playing. She very clever - she has a favourite toy that she's had for two years now, since she was a kitten. It's all beaten up and smelly but it's the only toy she likes to play fetch with (she plays fetch like a dog!)
Another common misperception is that they're ALL skinny little things with funny faces and huge ears. The thin ones are bred for showing and I'm kinda opposed to the idea of breeding cats for physical features like that. But the "traditional" Siamese cats are quite normal looking (except for their beautiful blue eyes, potentially long faces and beautiful colourings).
Here is my Lili cat :)

Okay I'm going to stop spooging about cats now. Except for one more thing - they have "favourite people". I'm Lili's favourite, so she'll always sit on my lap or wash my face, or cuddle up next to me in bed. It's a very rewarding relationship, one that can be quite rare for cat owners. She has also learned to tap my leg when she wants attention, which is supercute :)
I'd call it Lord Nibbler. Of the Niblonians.
Man here is a show siamese... it's just so wrong looking...

Looks like a damn Gremlin! (http://yaketyyak.blogspot.com/gremlins.jpg)
Your first cat? I would name him "One".
I call my cat..oh god, am I obsessed.. Tril.
we name all of our cats after people from the hobbit and lord of the rings(actually that goes for all out animals).
we had a cats called bilbo and frodo they are gone now, we have 3 cats at this point in time strider shadowfax(shadow for short) and precious(you know the one ring is called thru out the books my precious or the precious also when she was little she had a shiny light ring on her side).
they are all lovely pets never chewed wires or anything tho they do like to scratch sofas but if you provide them with a scratching post and if they do scratch the sofa you tell them off after a while they wont do it anymore.
o also next cat would be a lovely grey one and i would call it gandalf the grey :P.
If I had a cat, I would definitely call it "dog".
Nothing is cooler than yelling "DOOOG" and a cat coming to you.
I have a 15 year old cat that I got when he was a kitten. He was diagnosed with Diabetes almost 2 years ago, I have to give him insulin shots.
And of course his name is Fluffy. I didn't name him, my ex-girlfriend gave him that name. I just called him Kitty Cat until he was introduced to the name Fluffy.
I still hate the name Fluffy, but he doesn't mind.
Well since your nick is Technocrat why don't you call your kitty Technocat. You could even shorten it to Techno (Techna for a girl kitty) or Techie.
Catmeat.
You could call your cat Meowser.
We had a pair of kittens take up residence with us lately, strays that started living in our garden while we were looking after our aunt's cat, Tinker.

Since the kittens seem to have taken up residence in a large flowerpot in the garden, we've called them Bill and Ben.
