Post by: arj0n on Mon 15/02/2010 08:15:30
Get it for free at: the official site:  (http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic) :)

THE BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE HAS BEGUN!

Set in the early 21st century, Tiberian Sun once again pits the Global Defense Initiative against
the Brotherhood of Nod in a struggle for control of the planet. With an epic storyline that unfolds
as play progresses, players learn the reasons behind the worldwide outbreak of Tiberium and
what happened to the notorious Nod leader Kane, who was presumed dead at the end of the
first Command & Conquer.

KANE IS DEAD. A NEW ENEMY HAS EMERGED.

It's time to head up the Firestorm task force. Nod's experiments have unknowingly released a
horde of cybernetic nightmares upon the world. As GDI and Nod scramble to save themselves,
they realize their only salvation lies in the unthinkable.

Is this like a once in a life time opportunity or huh?

It's a huh:

This free download action is just to promote Electronic Arts' Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight.
So it's not a once in a life time opportunity, it seems to be free for ever.

So that makes you a promoter of Tiberian Twilight too :)

I never owned any Westwood RTS myself, but took ones from friends a number of times. They all look quite nice at start, but after a while I became bored. Also, I just hated their controls  :P I mean - mouse controls. As for the sidebar, I seriously believe Blizzard should consider using something like that in their games.

I remember playing Tiberian Sun as well long time ago. It had some beautiful enviroment effects. Maybe I'll try when I have time.

And all their games are the same, since Dune 2 from 1992. Those guys are as creative as a brick in a wall.

But it's worth mentioning that Dune 2 started the RTS genre. I guess they just got really tired from being so creative at the beginning.

Anyone ever played Napalm?

looked cool back in the day, but had a terrible mission design :(

I play them all for the FMVs. I love me some James Earl Jones in Tiberian Sun.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
Getting "creative" has helped genre how?? One shit game after another. Only so-so star in pile of dump was Company of Heroes, but all other attempts at changing the basics have failed miserably. Now what's so bad in building a base and collecting resources? Liking the system in World at War for example might be cool thing to say, but doesn't cover for the fact that you're simply too braindead to play classic RTS. There's a reason people still enjoy 10+ old games, such as Starcraft of Total Annihilation or any other thing that hasn't been exchanged for something new -- old ones were good.

Instead, every other damn developer tried to copy Dune 2, because it was simply best system to use.

Electronic Arts has destroyed Westwood pretty much by now --  starting with Command & Conquer: Generals which was fun, but lost old touch, and ending with C&C 4 and Red Alert 3, which are abysmal glowfests-kiddie games with everything good about original ruthlessly murdered... -- but at old times, Westwood made coolest games in history, IMO. From awesome original C&C to Legend of Kyrandia to Lands of Lore to Dune (which was quite interesting too)

Plus, they had best music ever heard in computer games.
I don't think Westwood has sucked, ever. But EA on the other hand... they'd better stick to pumping out new Sims games from what's left of Maxis.

Releasing oldies as freeware is kinda sad, though.
It's like saying: "look how low we've sunk now, compared to what we did before 1998"

I think releasing older games as freeware is an excellent marketing strategy because it not only draws in young players who probably would never have played the older games due to lack of availability/promotion but it also reminds some of the older fans who have moved on that the series is is still going.  I don't really get how releasing these games to the public domain in any way makes the company responsible look like they've 'lost their touch' or are admitting something along those lines, it's just another marketing strategy to get press and exposure when a game is no longer capable of generating a profit.

Well look at how GTA 1 is free on the Rockstar site.

It's a great way to say thanks, and promote yourself even more, like progz stated.

Post by: InCreator on Tue 16/02/2010 08:14:13
Well, freeware is always good, for starters. But in current case...
Free release is nice if current state of series was as good or even better... "see how we've progressed!"
But have they?

C&C4 turned original semi-realistic warfare into walking laser gun robot spider feet tank mayhem (Since Tiberian Sun was sci-fi enough to stand on his own so it doesn't count) and graphics into non-saturated superglowing ultrabright headache... I want my little soliders with chemical weapons and burning enemy solider yelling his lungs out. And that badass commando. Not robots, looking like something from typical drawings of my 6-year old nephew.

>:(
<nerdrage of liftetime westwood RTS fan>

My, InCreator, so much nerdrage and I agree with almost none of it :P (base building ain't bad, ya hear?!) And while Red Alert took it's campyness  to a whole new level (with comic book style units to boot), the new strategic elements of unit powers were quite a welcome addition. Besides, I can't flaw a game when I'm taking orders from Dr. Frank N. Further :=

I can't speak for CnC4, since I haven't played it yet. But is it really that different from CnC3? Looking at the screenshots I don't really think so.

Well, if it hasn't been said, thanks Arj0n for the heads up. I've been playing this all day today and yesterday. I love these RTS things, but I'm not too good at them. The last one I played was Warcraft 3. It's fun to have another one.

I have to admit that I skipped all the FMVs though :P Even James Earl Jones wasn't enough to make me watch the cheesy acting.

Arboris: Look at it this way, you're not taking orders from Dr Frank N Furter, you're taking orders from Gabriel Knight. Wait, that's not much better, is it? :P Either way, Red Alert 3 is made of awesome.

Sorry. Since Westwood always reminds me of C&C I should have said: C&C sucks. Big time!
Title: Re: for FREE: Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun + Firestorm
Post by: InCreator on Tue 16/02/2010 13:49:14
No it doesn't.

Also, I blame arboris and auriond for downfall of the legend. Support crap and crap you will get.

Red alert 3 - a...a...awesome? You wanted to say "omfgthisisgodawfulandworstgameevar1!". No matter how many cute chicks in FMV, the game still sucks.
CnC4? I meant CnC 3. But since they're exactly same glowing crap, no matter.

Then again, it's the sci-fi that ruins things for me. Somehow, far-far-future things totally suck IMO.
Because you can put whatever amount of lasers and space wonders into it, no creativity needed. Everything stupid is excused.

But taking a real world and slightly adjusting it into something awesome, now that's interesting. I can relate to it. It's fun to wonder mysterious crystal tiberium growing under my window. Gazillion spaceships and stupidity (like in  Independence day), not so much.

That's why people like X-files over Mars Attacks and Lost is so damn popular despite creators having major lulz at viewer's cost: there still could be simple, believable (REALISTIC!) explanation to the mystery, without too much random space stuff.

That's the difference between new and old CnC games too. Laser obelisk and stealth technology I believe -- but every machine having legs and soliders shooting unnamed rays I do not.

CnC != Starcraft!!!

Post by: auriond on Tue 16/02/2010 14:15:28
:P Sorry InC, cute chicks don't factor in my definition of awesomeness. The presence of Tim Curry does though. That alone made Red Alert 3 awesome. That and Rammstein some time back (was it Red Alert 2? 1?)

No, but why are you so dead against futuristic sci-fi? People like Star Wars and Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica too, y'know. Not everyone is an X-Files and Lost fan. In fact, Lost lost me really early on in the series, when it was evident that the writers had no idea where they were going with the story. Mars Attacks isn't even a comparable genre of sci-fi.

As for me, I support CnC, Red Alert et al not because of any cute chicks or sci-fi-ness (remember I skipped all FMVs!) I just like RTS games, that's all. The gameplay is so addictive. If that's crap, bring it on.

I would say that newer CnC games (Like Generals, Tiberium Wars, RA3 and CnC4) are based in the new way of thinking and for new generation players.
I think the almost all new games don't have the "magic" that was present in older ones.

I am only 26, but i was there in the 90' when all the best genres arrived and games were just to die for.

CnC has lost its magic, but we can still play the old ones. I replayed CnC 1, Ra1, Tib Sun again few months ago, and you know what, it was great experience, better than 95 % of todays games.

I lost my faith in good games few years ago when all crappy Need for Speeds, CnC 3+ and all other neon based games start to come out.

Maybe it is just me...

I agree with the quoted "If it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. I only recently played RA3, and as soon as I started it I got a kind of warm, familiar feeling from knowing what I'm dealing with - build the base, get the army and kick some Soviet arse at a quick pace with lots of badass commandos thrown in.

I'm also the guy who likes WWII FPS for similar reasons, so I seem to public enemy #1 of all the net's elitist gamers.

I remember when I used to play the first C&C, after borrowing it off a friend. It was special, and different to anything else I'd played at the time! I agree with the people on here who say they're all becoming far too homogenous. Things like stealth tanks aside, C&C and Red Alert were both semi-realistic warfare, then it degraded into lasers from there.

There *are* good sci-fi strategies, Starcraft and Supreme Commander being examples, but making every single example of strategy into some "dark and grimy" generic science fiction future really took away from it somehow.

Also, Red Alert 3 sucked. Except Tim Curry.

Sorry I'm not being particularly constructive, it just had such a lasting impact on my childhood, it's not something I like seeing being messed around with!

Well, all is not lost.
C&C series have influenced Act of War and it's expansion, which is exactly what C&C should have became in 2000-s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBity08oJes

It has much what C&C should: US Army playing as fully realistic side, Task Force Talon brings mild sci-fi upgrade to it, and Consortium with fully experimental (BUT NOT OVERDONE) technology, hit'n'run orientation and somewhat darker feeling feels pretty much Brotherhood of Nod.

Plus they successfully mix Westwood's original RTS system with Blizzard's way of doing same thing, so it's hybrid with best of each mixed.

That leaves AoW my favourite RTS until something better comes out. But EA won't bring a contender, it seems, because every new C&C game seems to suck, trying to be Starcraft II.

I wish THQ tried to make Company of Heroes in modern era someday. Their approach was quite interesting too.

Heh... I tried this TS... and again, at first it was fun, but after few days and 5 missions for both sides I just felt that I don't want to play anymore, and deleted it  :P
