Here is a program for anybody who loves DOOM, the ability to create their own maps (levels) from scratch.  I started using this program a couple of weeks ago and i have made some really awesome levels.  The program is called DOOM Builder.  It is simple to use (read the manual) and in no time you will be creating DOOM levels like a pro.

I play deathmatch with a guy from work over our work network, so i only build deathmatch levels.

Just look for DOOM builder on this site, download, and enjoy.

p.s. you must have doom installed on your computer to use this, since it looks for the DOOM.wad file for graphics and such.

Welcome to 2005...

I'm not sure what you ment by that, but the reason most of us are here is because of our love of older games.  I think this fits perfectly here.

I figured that alot of people still play Doom here.  There is also a program called DOOM connector which i found that allows people to still play deathmatch online and all the lobbies are still full of people waiting to play, so i don't understand the comment of welcome to 2005.  Maybe i was wrong, i must be stuck in a time warp. But some games remain a classic, no matter how many years go by.

Sheesh I didn't mean for you all to take it so seriously, I was only joking. I play older games all the time in fact it's what I mostly play. Hehe :)

i've had doom builder sitting on my hard drive for quite a while now but have never really tried it out.
i used to play doom over DC quite a lot when i first got it, back then the future of it was uncertain as the main server was being shut down but i guess it didn't in the end, i haven't played doom for a while now but i keep meaning to re-install DC and have some fun, i mostly used to play DOOM2 co-op on ultra violent, which was very fun :)

You wouldn't know about any graphic editor for doom 1 or 2, would you? I've been looking for that. :)

Bah. Making levels for Duke Dukem 3d is much more fun. :P

Making levels for Doom ... ahhhh the memories.

My brother and I used to go crazy with this stuff.  We made a Star Wars total conversion one time.  You played as a rebel soldier going around blasting storm troopers and the final bad guy was Boba Fett.

We also started a G.I.Joe conversion, with tons of the characters.  But we only got a few maps done before losing interest.

We also made a new weapon out of the chainsaw using our dog.  When you pressed the trigger he started biting ... it was hilarious!

Yeah, i used to enjoy making levels with the BUILD editor that came with Duke Nukem 3D, but i really wanted to make DOOM levels.  I think DOOM, in my personal opinion is a better game and has a better atmosphere than DN3D.

I started making DOOM maps around 94 or 95 and started using the BUILD level editor back in 96 i believe.

Kinda off topic, but does anyone know how to extract them midis out of the wad files? I tried some wad editors, but I was either too stupid to figure them out or they crashed a lot. The one that did work had an option to edit the music, but not save/load it to/from the disk

AgentLoaf

You need a resource hacker. Something like MultiEX Commander will do the trick.

Kweepa

Aah yes, making doom levels.
I remember when it was hard core - all there was to work with was DEU and you had to write your own tools to patch together textures. :=

When I was supposed to be writing up my thesis I made some levels and wrote a chapter for one of the "Gurus" books. A few of my textures made it into Final Doom! Now that's crazy.

Some of the Doom source projects are pretty sophisticated these days. I used to use Boom but I that was superceded a long time ago.

HillBilly, I'm not sure what you mean by a graphic editor, but you can make patches (texture elements) with any art package and piece them together with something like DeuTex.

DOOM doesn't use midis, it uses MUS files, i think something like Multi Ripper 2.80 might be able to extract stuff from the WADs, and i'm pretty sure there are a few MUS to MID convertors around, plus you can probably find all the doom music as midi files if you search around.

I started work on a Wolfenstein 3D mod a while back... Pretty cool. Alot of work though, I didn't get much past the planning phase. I'll probably work on it some more some day when I'm bored, haha.
I make music.

I didn't do much DOOM editing back in the day, but we did do a sound edit that was a TON of fun to play. We replaced all (or, at least, almost all) sounds with ones we recorded on our own. Most of the new sounds were voice overs. It was HILARIOUS to play.

Gun: Pow! Pow!
Shotgun: Cha-chick. BOOM!
Chainsaw: Blub, bulub, blub, blub, blub-- GNNINININNINININNINININ!

etc.

That's awesome, I own a copy of Tricks of the Doom Gurus, which I assume is the one you're talking about. The disc had a scratch when I finally got a hold of it, so my friend Mike and I had to do the 'Work, damn you!' chant over my 386 trying to get it to read. I should track that book down again. I was big on Doom before FPSes saturated the market, and used to make a lot of levels for it... Nothing good, mind you, except for a fully-featured Winnebago. Those were the days. Maybe once I scrape some of my other projects off my plate, I should try to actually make a proper mod for that baby...

thanks AgentLoaf and Boyd! MultiEX Commander didn't work for some weird reason (it said that the list is empty, I'm sure I selected it to open a doom2 wad) but the other thing worked. Now lemme google for mus to midi. I did google for the doom midis but all I got there was the midi of the first level.

Haha!  We did this too!  We replaced the monster's 'alert' sound.  (the sound it makes when the notice you).  We changed it so that everytime one of the monsters sees you it shouts out, "Pooooopie!" in a really nasaly pitched voice.  It was priceless!

I love Doom, I use the excellent jDoom (available for Windows, Linux and Mac) with jDRP 3D models and jDTP high-resolution textures.
jDRP v1.1 is currently in development, and the new 3D models simply rock, very true to the original sprites.
Check this out (Yes, that blue vial is 3D!):

I've drastically reduced the image quality for posting here, but trust me they look awesome!

jDRP v1.2 will have all-new 3D monster models. Can't wait!
