Title: Forum move to new server
Post by: Pumaman on Sat 23/09/2006 17:30:20
Greetings,

Due to the forums running up excessive load on the server, the web host asked me to upgrade to a dedicated server, or leave.

So, thanks to Hajo and AGA, the forums have now moved to the AmericanGirlScouts server. The current URL is temporary so don't bookmark it for the long term; I'm currently considering long-term options.

I am aware that the "My games" section of your profiles is broken, this won't be resolved until a final decision has been made on where the forums will be hosted full time.

If you find any other problems with the forums as a result of this move, let me know and I'll get them fixed.

Thanks!

Congrats on the server move. It's really great of AGA and Hajo to give their help.
AGS forums is one of my favorite places on the internet, so I would go crazy without it.  ;) So far it looks like most everything seems to be working smoothly for me.

I've noticed an improvement in speed performance (before I had been having a lot of slowdown on the forums), so yay for the new server ^_^

Everything appears to be working wonderfully. So will the entire BBC domain be moved to the AGS server, or will the forums get a subdomain/folder or what? I'm interested as to where they'll end up. ;)

Anyway...I think it might be a good time to get that "yabb" part out of the URL. These haven't been YaBB forums for some time. Though I could understand the desire to leave it for nostalgic reasons. :=

I think the yabb is there to avoid the confusion a change of URL would cause more than anything. But it bugs me too, yeah.

I think we may have experienced a problem.

It seems that no one can register. I haven't tried this myself as I don't have the time this morning, but I did receive the following email:
-----------------------
Hi,
I found your email via your website through the AGS forums, I hope you don't mind that. I am Snail and I did join the AGS mailing list but the forums, I am having problems with registering to join, and yes I did answer all questions, - at the end after 'submitting' I get this msg:

i'll scan the files for all occurances of the old path and will tell CJ when i'm home.

For me everything goes much slower... :(

Where is the server located? Is it in the states? Because that could explain why it's slow for Swedes like me.

No problems - only that I can finally view the forums at college because of the new URL! :) It filters "games" pages, so I don't know if tags under "bigbluecup" have "games" in them etc. Still, yaaay!

Problem found!

One of my friends from outside the AGS community is involved in my game, and I asked him to sign up for an account here so I could add him in the credits.

Well... it won't allow me to update the page with his user name.  It's not verified.  I can only guess that it's because he signed up after the server swap.

Yes, that'll be related to the My Games bit in your profile not working. Sorry about that, not a lot that can be done to fix it in the immediate future.

Hm... As I can not find this issue being mentioned here in this thread so far: It seems as if e-mail notification does no longer work. I neither receive PMs nor info e-mails about new posts. Just checked the settings in the profile (correct) and the mail account (running fine). So I guess it's something to report here :)

i don't know if this is related to the server change or not, I'm trying to add a game to the game database, it keeps saying you must be logged into the forums to add a game, but I am logged in (continous setting). I've also added the webpage to my privacy settings, still no luck.
Title: Re: Forum move to new server

Ah yes, that's probably caused by the server move. I need to start looking into a solution for this.

I get a similar thing, since I cannot post in the games database, it says I'm not logged in, but I see other people posting in the games database?

If you were logged into the forums when the move happened, your cookie is still valid for adventuregamestudio.co.uk so it'll still let you post on the games page. If you weren't logged in at the time, you can't now log in for the games page. As I said, I'll look into it.

Hi,

i registered for the forum today but when I try to vote for a game I can't. I generally allow all coocies - that should not be the problem. Is it possible that the move of the forum is the cause of the problem?

btw - I use firefox, but also tried it with IE - no change.

Yes, please see above -- I'm aware that the games page isn't recognising you as being logged in at the moment. I'm still looking into it but basically I'll probably have to move the games page to the other server as well which is why it's taking a while to fix.

This may just be my computer, but after I log in, on the main forums page it calls me a "Guest". But when I go to a different page it says my username. It's not really a problem, just a possible bug you might want to know about. But, again, it could just be my computer or something.

Actually I'm having a simmilar problem with my PC/firefox (?)

When I open firefox (and I have AGS forums as my default page), I'm taken to the forums and I'm already loged in. But the minute I try a different page, I have to login again...

??? Could it be the new server? Or something to do with me?

I think when you type in www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb it still takes you to the americangirlscouts.org/bbc.com/yabb hosted forums thingy. But when you click on the different boards and topics and things it's all on the www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb, hence having to login again.

Ok, I've finally got around to moving the rest of the website onto the new server. I've changed the main www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk domain to point there, but as with all domain changes it'll take a few hours to filter through to everyone.

Once that is done, the old URL  www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/  should start working again.
Also, the Games page should now be working again for those who were having problems.

Finally, if you notice anything that's not working properly on the website please let me know.

Unfortunately, I've found loads of spam on the bug tracker so I've had to disable the comment facility for now. It really makes me sad that nowadays you just can't provide anonymous posting on the internet without it getting abused. :(
Title: Re: Forum move to new server

Could tracker comments be set up to access the same database as the forums, and only allow users who have been forum members for say, at least 2 weeks to post comments?

Glad to see that Ye Olde BigBlueCup.comme has been restored.

[EDIT:]

Actually WWW doesn't seem to show my log status properly (even after clearing cache). This could just be because the domain issues...I don't know. Anyway, for now I've just set my bookmark to NEW, and I'll try WWW again in a few days.

Hmm... weird...

Yeah, I am logged in at the address AGA gave me, but if I close the browser and re-open it, at the main forum page it says, "Welcome, Guest...".

If I click on a thread, then I'm magically logged in again.

*shrugs*

EDIT:
Ha ha... sorry.  It was my bookmark.  It was still for the OLD forum address.  I deleted it, and bookmarked the new address.
Title: Re: Forum move to new server

So, here we are again.

You may have noticed that the forum URL has changed yet again. The reason is that having two different servers (www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk and www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk) is getting on my nerves, so I'm planning to consolidate it all back into one server.

However, before I can do that, I need to be sure that the new server can handle the load. That's why I've moved the forums over to the new server. If it all seems to work ok, then I'll move the entire website here and sort the URL's out so that we just have one website again.

So, let me know if you get any problems.

I think the problem is related to the search function, whereby if somebody does a search the forum grinds to a halt for everyone else. I'm currently running some database optimisations to hopefully improve this, but it does mean I'd expect the forum to run a bit slowly for the next hour or so.

The forum is not currently connected to the live games DB as it's on a different server.

This will be rectified once I've decided whether to go ahead with using this server or not.

In the meantime, please DO NOT add your game again, you'll end up with two copies on the games page and it still won't appear here.

Please just be patient, I'm sure you can survive a week without the game listed in your profile.

Has anyone had any slowness problems in the last 24 hours, or does it all seem to be working properly now?

I've used it from three different connections now, the forums refuse to resolve from time to time.
I tried various computers and DNS servers, so the slowdown shouldn't be on my end.

Also, some pages load quite slowly (especially the category indexes). You may want to adjust your accelerator's settings a bit.

Apart from that it's fine. Slow but working, most of the time.

That's odd, because the DNS server for the domain is still the same as it always has been, so it wouldn't make any sense if "www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk" wasn't resolving but "www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk" was, since they're on the same DNS server.

Odd, all the page loads including the index are pretty much instant for me now. Is anyone else finding it slow?

The Forums are running much faster than they were a couple of days ago.

Thirding that the forums are faster now.

Both couldn't resolve last night, so it could've been some DNS bug in my routers. It's fine now :)

I've pinged the IP a bit, usually it's around 150 ms but some packets (1 in 10 maybe) just drop or are delayed to 400+ ms. My ISP probably doesn't like America :(

Oh, also this just happened:
QuotePage created in 2.02 seconds with 14 queries.

What is it with me finding problems no one else has? :P

I have also sometimes to reload the page because the name cant be resolved

I find that most pages are really fast but ones that perhaps haven't been updated (or viewed?) for a while (like older threads) are really slow.

Hmm interesting -- well, by the sounds of it this isn't particularly related to the new server but is simple some sort of outstanding problem. If I go ahead and move everything to the new server then I'll take the DNS with it and maybe that'll fix this issue.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that the server performance is back to normal. Just one outstanding question for you all -- are any of you successfully receiving notification e-mails? I know there are some problems with the email sending at the moment so I'm curious if it's working at all.

For your question, no, but it coincided with changing email accounts and password when I had trouble with the hotmail account, so I can't be sure...

The only notification email I received was the AGS 3.0.1 now available!‏, on April 20.

I have notifications turned off, so I got...nothing.

Load speed seems a little faster for the main site. Forums about the same. There used to be a delay in loading www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk (Firefox would say "Looking up www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk..." for about fifteen to twenty seconds), but it seems to have gone now.

Ok, I've moved the games page to the new server now, so your profiles should now be hooked up correctly.

Yes, the server had a hardware failure when one of the hard drives died. It's now back up.

Ok, I finally got around to sorting the domain names out, so www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk should once again be the main all-encompassing URL for the AGS website and forums. You'll probably all find that you've been logged out by the forums changing from more. back to www. but you can just log in again to fix that.

Any problems let me know.

When I click on "Mark all messages as read" I get this message:

"Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again."

EDIT: Now it's working.
EDIT2: Hm, no, it doesn't.

Try signing out of www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb then back in there. If that doesn't work, try deleting your cache and cookies. If that doesn't work, cry.
Title: Re: Forum move to new server

You might have "www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb" in your favourites -- best thing to do is delete the AGS Forums from your favourites, go to:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/
and then add it back again.

I just noticed, when I wanted to copy and paste the URL of a particular thread, that I can't do that.
No matter where you are on the forums the address http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forum/ always remains in the address box.  This is nice and neat, but how does one copy and paste the URL?
Title: Re: Forum move to new server
Post by: Tuomas on Fri 11/07/2008 23:53:40
This is strange. I don't get that at all...

What if you copy/paste this on it http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=29071.new#new and then try looking at links again. My address bar gets jammed sometimes too.

Post by: Stupot on Sat 12/07/2008 00:15:47
I yeh I see.  Thanks Tuomas.
If I log onto the bigbluecup domain then the addresses come up as normal, it's only when I log onto the adventuregamestudio domain that it seems to hide them from me... Interesting quirk... haha
Title: Re: Forum move to new server
Post by: AGA on Sat 12/07/2008 02:10:36
That's not a quirk, adventuregamestudio.co.uk just loads the site in a frame. You shouldn't really use it if you know the real site/forums domain, only if the forums disappear for some reason.
Title: Re: Forum move to new server
Post by: Stupot on Sat 12/07/2008 02:34:59
I didn't realise you shouldn't use it... Infact I discovered AGS via the co.uk domain first and have used the two in pretty much equal measures.

The main reason I ever used bigbluecup at all was as an alternative at college because the co.uk domain has the word 'game' in it and was therefore blocked.

Funny, the redirect page when the forums moved said the exact opposite...

Well that's silly. Having a frame with unusable hyperlinks isn't something to aim for!
Title: Re: Forum move to new server
Post by: Pumaman on Sat 12/07/2008 23:09:08
Yeah the frames are annoying, it's the way that the DNS registrar I'm using do their redirection. I'm going to see if I can set up a DNS server on the AGS server to handle it instead.

Remembered this thread and thought I'd ask: am I correct to understand that "My Games" part of our profiles should be operational again? If so, then is it possible that my only finished game was left in some kind of limbo, as it is not showing on my profile at all,, or is this normal?

Thanks!

Well, the server we were on was just woefully underpowered, and buckled under even the most modest of loads. Also, due to exchange rate changes, having a server in the US is no longer a good deal for me.

So, I have now got a new server and moved the forums across (to this www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk URL).
This is not a permanent URL -- it'll change back to www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk once everything is moved across.
If this seems to be reliable then I'll move the rest of the site across to the new server too.

I've also taken the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of the forum software, so let me know if you have any problems.

Just to clarify -- everything was moved across to the new server on Monday. It feels a lot faster to me, which is a good sign.

I will decomission the old server this weekend if all goes well, so if anyone has had or now experiences any problems with the forums or website please let me know.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/worldmap.php doesn't work, although I'm not sure if it even worked before the server change, since I hadn't checked it for a while.

That hasn't worked in ages. I should get around to fixing it, but I'm lazy.

On that note, my FTP and RDC users seem to not exist any longer, CJ. My database seems alright though.
