Well.. If you're not a pirate, and you use mIRC.. Or if you just feel guilty.. There may be hope for you.

I, LGM, have found a Freeware alternative to mIRC that offers the same functionality and more.

Behold, BersIRC!

The freeware IRC Client!

It's awsome.. And sure beats pirating mIRC.

don't confuse mIRC with IRC.

That's like calling Opera or Mozilla an alternative to HTML.

There's a million billion freeware IRC clients, inlcuding things like Miranda and Trillian which also connect to MSN, AIM, ICQ and Yahoo networks.

mIRC simply proved the most popular, and it's creator decided to make it nagware, although it's still free.

--edit-- There's one or two here as well http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Internet/Clients/Chat/IRC/

telnet://irc.quakenet.org:6668.

My IRC client of choice. You get disconnected every once in a while if you don't type in your ping replies fast enough but it's quite versatile.

I didn't confuse mIRC with IRC..

I just thought this was the most similar I've tried to date..

His point was that mIRC is just a client, whereas IRC is the whole protocol itself.  There is no "IRC program", you use other programs (such as mIRC) to access IRC.

Also, Las: I think the analogy would work better by calling Opera or Mozilla an alternative to the internet.

XChat is the Linux user IRC client of choice (unless you're an uber-geek, then you use BitchX). It also has a Windows port. If you don't wanna use mIRC, try it. It's a bit harder to customise, but once you've worked it out, it's just as good as mIRC, I've found.

I wouldn't. It makes your eyes bleed. It's all text, no windows or anything, and all the channels you're currently in are displayed in the same window (as default anyway, I didn't stick with it long enough to find out if you could change it). I took one shot at it and got rid of it :P

You could always IGNORE the registration messages the creator sneaked into mIRC.  Shouldn't be too hard.
