Title: Free Antivirus
Post by: Pau on Sat 27/12/2003 00:04:06
When I bought my motherboard I recived a CD with the Norton antivirus but the update period finishes in 2004. So I began to look for a free antivirus and I found AVG:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)
Before I decide to download it I want to know if anybody knows if it's good or could tell me any one better(and also free).

After a looong search i can tell you that there is no better free antivirus than AVG. I'm using it and i luv it!

But, if you really want to be secure when surfing the internet get Deep freeze. It freezes your partition and each time you restart your comp. Deep freeze restores your previous settings. you can select partitions which you would like to freeze, so you still have other partitions where you can save your files. It is always in the tray and you can turn it off when you don't need it.

Yeah, I'm using it as well, and I think it's good. Easy to use and so far I've had no viruses - At least that I know of...

I got my antivirus (norton, though now they call it symantec?) from my university. I think a lot of universities offer this, but some people just don't know about it.

I use Avast! from Alwil... They have a free license for home computers... It's not Norton (which, because a windows-like syndrome,  is widely attacked by virii), and it has automatic updates, and those nice thingies...

It also has a kinda cool interface, for those who dig for that thing :)

Normally Adwear works better for me. Its free and a lot of people use it. Its more of a spywear thing but it has picked up some viruses before Norton has.

I go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for my Viruse needs, probably not as good as Avg or norton though...

Then I use Spybot search and destroy...

And then I use Adaware....

And then I use startup Cpl to keep shit from starting up and taking over my computer...

After a research and reading your comments I think I'll try AVG.
Thank you all for your comments.

No Antivirus is perfect. Mark my words! I'm talking out of expirience. Each antivirus can trace its own crap! So, the best way is to use a combination of many antiviruses (note that you can't have both Pc-Cillin and Norton Antivirus). You can't have two real-time protections or two scans at the same time, or else you'll experience problems. But anyway, there are viruses AVG can't trace but Norton does, and vice versa:

QuoteNormally Adwear works better for me. Its free and a lot of people use it. Its more of a spywear thing but it has picked up some viruses before Norton has.

Firstly, it's Ad-Aware. Adware, spyware, regware etc is what it gets rid of. It is not an antivirus. It may get rid of some viruses (if they have something to do about spyware), but if you just use this one then your pc is in big danger.

(norton, though now they call it symantec?)

This is totally unimportant, but just so you're aware, Symantec is the company and Norton is the name of the software.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
