Title: Free domain... or is it?
Post by: Haddas on Tue 20/07/2004 18:30:31
I know there are a lot of free web-hosts and stuff, but I can never seem to find a good free domain name... I found something that seems interesting, but I don't know if they can be trusted... I know, silly :P

http://www.freedomain.co.nr/

I want to know if anyone here uses or knows anyone who uses these .co.nr domains?

Well, as far as I can tell, the only requirement with this is that you have a link on the main site back to their homepage.
One thing to keep in mind is that since the business model for these companies is piss poor, they tend to go under pretty quick, so you have to be prepared for that probability.
Also, they don't offer hosting, which is really where most of the expense comes from anyway.
You can register a domain for 10-12$usd/year, which even a poor slob like me can afford.

For the record: I've been using co.nr as a redirections service for my site (www.garage.co.nr) for the last 3-4weeks.

They don't have pop-ups nor anoying banners...
It's seems really good to me, no complaints so far.

.tk is horribly slow.

co.nr looks promising, but.. It's never UP! They're sign-up servers are constantly down.

.tk is good, apart from the occasional slownes, and the fact that every paged opened in that window will then have your site's address or name (if you set one in the settings, where you can turn off the popup ad also) in the title bar for every loaded page, atleast on IE ("www.eaarghefblfdsajkdlsafdsafsdsafds.tk - Micro$oft Internet Exploder" or "site name afdasgaewfsd - Micro$oft Internet Exploder")...

(hmmm... that was not supposed to be a link... whatever.... I changed it, god knows what that site is, if it is anything...)

For free domain redirection, I recommend www.no-ip.com ... They're reliable, they've got probably a dozen domain suffixes to choose from, and they provide a utility that will automatically update the redirection address if it happens to change (like it would if you had a dynamic IP).

Evil and I used no-ip for quite a while on MikeandHarry before it inevitably went down for work.
