Title: Free DVD Decoder?
Post by: Timosity on Sat 13/03/2004 09:07:06
I got a DVD RW drive the other day, and I just asumed you could play DVD's through WMP, but I found out you need a DVD Decoder for that to happen, I also noticed you can buy it through Microsoft.

What I want to know is, are there any good reliable FREE DVD Decoders out there, I've searched Google but I'm not sure what to trust.

Are there any Free media players that come with DVD Decoders?

I got Nero burning software with the DVD RW, but no decoder.

I'm sure they must be out there.

I've tried many players, and I like PowerDVD the best [although I did not buy it]. You can also play them through the program known as Media Player Classic, which has all the bloated crap of WMP taken out, as well as being able to play real media and quicktime files. It's DVD pictures aren't as good as PowerDVD but it's worth downloading anyway because it rocks.

But since you're asking specifically for free programs, Clex likes Maximus DVD [as he mentions here http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=10664;start=msg129190#msg129190 ]. So try that.

PowerDVD is the best. I have actually 3 cds of it. One that came free with my POV GeForce Ti4200 gfx card, one that came free with my CD-RW/DVD combo and one that came free with my laptop :P

I also have PowerDVD, and I agree that it is a good one to use.

I came across this (http://www.elecard.com/download/#mpeg2decoder) the other day but haven't tested it yet.

Thanks guys, it works fine in Media Player Classic, not that I really need to watch DVD's on my computer when I can watch them on a TV with with My Sony Digital Cinema Sound System, but I just wanted to see if it worked.

I might check out the trial of Power DVD, but I'm not really sure why I'd need it. I'll probably also try Maximus DVD to see what It's like.

& strazer, that link you gave is down, so I'll try it later

Thanks again
