Ok so I was going through my emails and I had bought a extra humble bundle V key.
Now I'm almost positive that I never used it, If I check on steam to see if I used it and I didn't it will just waste it.
So I figured I'll post it here and anyone who has steam and wants to use it can try(Though post here if it worked so I can delete this.)
LIMBO, Amnesia, Sword & Sworcery, and Psychonauts Steam Key
USED
Super Meat Boy, Lone Survivor, and Braid Steam key
USED
Edit:
I looked again and It said I had another key for the humble bundle 3 that I never used.
No idea what games its for.
USED
Humble Indie Bundle 3 had Crayon Physics Deluxe, Cogs, VVVVVV, Hammerfight, And Yet It Moves, Steel Storm and Atom Zombie Smasher.
Pity I already got all these bundles, otherwise I might have taken you up on the offer :D.
Ah.
I had fun with Hammerfight.
Codes are all used up, I think. Saying they're duplicates for me, anyway. Thanks anyway though! I'll check if I have any extra codes I can dish out...
I just noticed I have extra copies of some games on Steam...If anyone wants free copies of Half Life 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 1 let me know. Just give me your Steam handle. I also have Duke Nukem Forever. I only have one of each, so first come first serve.
Duke Nukem Forever, please. PM me the key?
VeryWeirdGuy sent me a PM at 12:04 board time beating you by a minute AGA...Sorry man. I still have HL2 and its first Episode.
Ah well theres 79 views, Guess whoever used em didn't post :P
AGA he needs your steam account name so he can gift it.
Also you can close this.
I got the whole half-life 2 series thanks though!

Grumble grumble Scottish bastard grumble. I've got all the Half-Life games already, thanks. I think I have a spare Episode One key myself.
I'll leave this thread open, since it seems to have turned into a key offering free for all.
I have a spare code for Puzzle Agent from a recent bundle. Anyone interested? Pretty cool game - the Grickle aspect of it in particular.
I wish you could give steam games away that you've already played and have no interest in anymore. I'd gladly give someone my slightly used duke nukem forever.

Got to join this. I have a free key for The Binding of Isaac*. It's collecting dust here and dusty keys are sad. Takers?

Is it one of those big and rusty keys?
It is probably a very humble key :D
Sorry for the double post, and also sorry, this isn't a steam key, instead, it is a gift code from GoG, so you'd need to be a member there to redeem this. Still, figured I should post it here, since this could be a general thread for this sort of stuff.
It is for Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business. It is a standalone game (you don't need JA2 for it), more focused on combat, and less on the other stuff, and was slightly less well received than JA2, apparently. If you want it, here is the code:
REDEEMED
That was quick!
Just to prevent future PMs regarding this...I no longer have Steam keys for Half-life or any other games for that matter.
New keys:
One for FROZEN SYNAPSE
and one for RAGE (where you shoot things until they die from it).
PM if interested.
edit: All claimed!
I think the term "double post" in so far as, "it is against the rules to double post" doesn't apply when your last post was in response to an off-topic tangent, your current post was (relatively) on-topic (arguably, it wasn't a "Steam" key), and there was more than 5 months between posts. Of course I'm not a moderator.
Speaking of off-topic tangents though...

Oh, and I did give it a go. I bought it on Telltale website and played through it all back then. The Steam key I got much later from a games bundle.

Oh, I know. :)
Great way to tell if you want to purchase the full game, though. I've never tried an Arma game before, since they tend to be very "sim", so it's the perfect chance to get a feel for this latest one.
Yeah, I was just about to say it's only the lite version (which doesn't seem to allow multiplayer neither) but still a nice way to test it out..
Anyone want a steam key for darksiders? I loathe the game but got it with some other thq crap. First person to pm me a request will get it.
The guys at Penny Arcade are giving away free keys for On The Rain-Slick Precipe Of Darkness 3. I have not played that game, but well, free is free, eh? Look here: http://penny-arcade.com/static/rainslick-giveaway
Apparently they'll do it as long as they have codes...
Thanks for the heads up, Ghost! I gots me one!
So did I. Thank-you.
Nothin's better than free keys that make people happy. (nod) And I got the game myself and it isn't bad at all either!
I've got a Dawn of War 2 that I will happily gift someone :) First come first serve. Cause I love you people.
Gifted to Ghost :)

There's an announcement on Steam for the "Sorcerer's Lair" pinball table, for free. You'll need to download Pinball FX2 (which is also free) to get it, and apparently it's not quite there yet apart from the announcement, so I am waiting all eager and stuff.
edit:
Just read it up- this'll take place Friday the 21st. Will give me time to buy some beers ;-D
Not Steam, but Torchlight is free at GOG right now.

I have a gift of Audiosurf gathering dust in my inventory. It's one of these games that create a racing track based on music, allows you to import your own music, and then lets you score the hell out of your playlist. It's pretty entertaining too.
Claimed!
Also, Zen Studios made good on their promise and the aforementioned Sorcerer's Lair pinball table is available for free now. It is very good and it has a helful girl ghost.
Legend of Grimrock anyone?
EDIT: As in I have a spare, anyone want it?

Would love it, Stee. Can you PM it to me?
I have all sorts of these lying around. I buy humble bundle keys and then end up forgetting to claim them and buy them games twice (and then don't even play them :-\ ).
Anyway may as well get rid of some more...
Cave Story+ and Binding of Issac + Wrath of the Lamb dlc are also sat unredeemed in this bundle. I have both already on steam...
Anyone want to claim these?
I have keys for Psychonauts and Costume Quest.

I was pleasantly surprised by Costume Quest and Stacking, thought they were for da kids games, but actually were very funny and interesting and of course with a brilliant design.
I'm only saying to people to try Costume quest, it's addictive fun and actually not that long (even has a DLC included), if only more jrpg-s (well that's what it is in some gameplay form) were made this way.

Anian - I'll take Costume Quest if no one else wants it. I was curious about the game, but never felt like the demo had much to offer beyond the combat (Timed attacks ... and that's it?).
AGA - The Ship looks interesting so I'll give it a whirl if no one else wants it. :)
Okay, everything's now claimed. I'll send the gift to you tonight / tomorrow, Magic.
If, for whatever reason, another key of The Ship comes available, lemme know? Thanks all for your generosity!
Actually, let Eric have The Ship (If it gets sent then I'll ignore the code). I've got a metric ton of games to play through at the moment.

Hey Eric, what's your Steam handle? I want to gift The Ship to you, but I also want to get that pesky "Make a trade" part of the Pillar of Community badge! Seems you don't get that if you just email the gift, they have to already be on your friends list.
I'd like Half Life 2, having never played it, and having heard of it for years!
Cortex Command is still available, seems nobody wants it? :D
Well if absolutely nobody else wants it, I would definitely give Cortex Command a try, I've seen pretty good reviews and I love the pixel art style. But I've already gotten HL2 yesterday - so if ANYBODY else has interest, please go ahead and take it!
HL2 goes to Babar the elephant :D

Hooray! I've won 6 GOG codes to redeem 6 games from their $9.99 or under range, that's potentially $59.94 worth of game :P
I'm going to need some help deciding which games to claim, so I'm going to donate one code each to the two people whom I judge as being most helpful in aiding my decisions. I'll probably focus on Adventure games, but feel free to suggest games from other genres.
Go!
These are my non-adventure game suggestions for you (sorted by whatever games came first in their listing on gog.com), a lot of these are classics that you might have already played:
Planescape: Torment Planescape is a must if you are not put off by a lot of reading/dialog in a game, it's a total classic with great atmosphere and story if you haven't played it!
Theme Hospital Do I have to say anything? Total classic. Go for it if you don't mind challenging simulation games and if you haven't played this one yet. It's got nice humor too!
The Witcher Absolutely amazing grown-up RPG. Must-play IF you have a lot of time and are partial to medieval/fantasy settings.
Freespace 2 Brilliant Space Combat Sim, excellent combat and gameplay if you're more into the action-y side of things. Don't like the graphics too much myself but if that doesn't matter to you so much...
System Shock 2 Amazingly scary first-person shooter and total classic. Pick this one up if you like horror and first-person shooters. It's another classic.
FTL: Faster Than Light Great new-ish indie game. Get this one if you enjoy rogue-like games (a combination of very hard difficulty, instant deaths and randomly generated levels) and enjoy sci-fi settings.
Blood An amazing early first-person shooter. If you like old-school shooters with plenty of violence and weapon variety, this one's for you.
Commandos 2+3 Can't say many good things about the third installment but getting both games for ~3 bucks is worth it for the wonderful Commandos 2: Men of Courage alone. A great and challenging strategy game set in WW2. Must play if you're into these kinds of games. Excellent music too - and beautiful 2d environment art.
Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive Very similar to Commandos 2: Men of Courage - except it's set in the Wild West. Go for this one instead of you prefer the Wild West setting over WW2.
Unreal Tournament GOTY Edition The best deathmatch shooter out there. This game is also referred to as Unreal Tournament '99 or Classic and it was by far the best UT game made. It's full of fast-paced action and it has absolutely amazing AI so playing bots is plenty of fun as well. Add a map editor and you get the perfect first-person shooter for people that don't care much for story/single-player games and prefer competitive multiplayer gameplay.
Krush, Kill 'N Destroy A very fun real-time strategy game in the vein of the earlier Command&Conquer titles. Get this if you enjoy real-time strategy games, it's really fun!
Hitman: Codename 47 My personal favorite when it comes to the Hitman franchise. Excellent level design, great atmosphere and amazing music make this a must-play if you enjoy stealth/deception style games.
I want to emphasize that each and every single game I just suggested is a really good game. I would suggest to pick out the ones that sound like they could be up your alley, watch gameplay footage on youtube or wherever and make your decision based on that. Hope this helps.

You can't go wrong with the Tex Murphy games - they're CLASSICS! Especially Under A Killing Moon, and Pandora Directive. And with the new Tex Murphy game (Tesla Effect) coming out (hopefully) at the start of the year, what better time to play them?
Another steam key:
Game Dev Tycoon
Stupot:
Dunno what games you have and don't have, so I might go over the number you need. You've probably played a number of these, so some of these descriptions might sound condescending to you, but when I use the expression "great story", which is something I focused on mostly for this list, I don't mean it lightly. If you're sticking to adventure games, I'd recommend:
- The Longest Journey: Great game, excellent story, occasionally silly puzzles. A LOT of dialogue and text (some optional, some really helps in world building, some not so much).
- To the Moon: a bit of a shortish game (I finished it in about 4 hours), but well worth it. Was made in RPG Maker, I think, so the interface was a bit clunky for an adventure game for me, but the story pulled me in anyhow. Really sweet.
- Quest for Glory 1-5: Even if it is for 4 and the remake of 1 (assuming you play the AGDI version of 2), I'd say it is worth it. If you don't know what QfG is , they're really nicely done RPG-Adventure game combinations. Except 5. 5 was horrible crap :P.
- Space Quest 1-3: I wouldn't say 2 was anything special, but 3 (especially) and the remake of 1 was excellent. Otherwise, you could go for Space Quest 4-6, which while I personally didn't care for 5 or 6, but it'd still be well worth it just for 4.
- Planescape: Torment: Not an adventure game, but it really should've been :D. Awesome story, awesome characters, cool world, all around awesome.
- Beyond Good & Evil: Even less of an adventure game, but I'd still very much so recommend it. Fun gameplay (some people hated that 1 stealth level, but I saw it as part of the charm), great story and atmosphere and music. One of those games I'm fanatic about now.
While not in the 9.99 range (are 5.99 instead), I'd still strongly recommend
Simon the Sorcerer 1 or 2, because they're great as well- beautiful graphics, great comedy, engaging gameplay (except that infamous puzzle in 2) and great characters and dialogue (some people found Simon's teenager rudeness in 2 a bit annoying, but I say the game makes enough fun of him for that anyway := ). Make sure you don't get 3, though!
Gabriel Knight 1 is also 5.99, but well worth considering- great story, great puzzles, sorta detective work.
As for less adventure gamey games,
Psychonauts for great dialogue, humour, atmosphere, everything you can expect from a Tim Schafer game (including, as well, somewhat problematic platforming in some places, but I'd still say that is far outweighed by the good points).
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time also, which came out around the same time as Beyond Good & Evil, and unfortunately overshadowed it a bit, but I can't feel too angry with it, because it is a solidly awesome 3D platformer with a great time travelly mechanic that functions as an insta-save. Cute atmosphere and story as well. I can't really recommend the other parts, though.. Two Thrones and Warrior Within tried being "darker" and "edgier" but ended up being stupid (the prince going all gothy in his style, and calling characters "bitch" and other weirdly out of place cussing), and the last one (simply called "Prince of Persia") gave up the time travel mechanic and sorta got boring.
Thief 2: for the mother of all stealth games (a significant improvement on 1, otherwise I'd've recommended that), really cool solve-how-you-want levels that are enjoyable to explore and crack.
Thief 3 sorta loses that non-linearity, but makes up for it with more in-depth story and atmosphere.
Fallout 2: and don't be confused, it is nothing like 3. An RPG with more strategic gameplay, more engaging characters, options and exploration.
Ultima 7: An RPG that was the pinnacle of Ultima games if you ask me, and something defining of RPGs in general. Highly interactive game world (and I'm not just talking about the people), with loads of open-ended exploration.
Another World: "Cinematic Platformer". Really pretty and smooth, atmospheric and a deservedly loved classic. Brutally hard, however, so be prepared to slog it out .
Deus Ex: Some sort of incredibly intricate stealth FPS/RPG hybrid that really emphasises the choices you make and their consequences. Multiple paths and ways to solve each mission as creatively as you like. Some people complain that its ugliness today makes it difficult to play, but mods have been released that fix that!
PS: I also have origin keys (not steam, but origin) from the recent Humble Origin Bundle if anyone cares for them.

Ah. Greed got the better of me. Nope, consider these dibs null and void :=
I haven't forgotten my generous offer ;-). I was hoping for a few more responses, but I guess you all are too busy making games to be playing any new ones from GOG :-D
I'll give it a couple more days, but thanks to those who have responded so far:
@DKH - The only game I've played from your list is Theme Hospital. I'm not really into FPS or RTS games (because I suck at them) so that rules out most of your list. However, Planescape: Torment does look good, and it's one that I keep meaning to pick up, so I guess now is as good a time as any :-)
@Frodo - I actually own Tex Murphy 1+2 and didn't really like the first one. I didn't like the driving about crap. Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive do look much better though so maybe I'll grab UAKM and see if I like it. Do you need to have played the previous games, or does it stand alone well?
@Babar - Most of the games you mention I have played/tried or I have acquired through bundles etc and not yet played. I never did get around to playing To the Moon, although come to think of it, I'm sure I have bought it from somewhere... maybe through a bundle, or via Wadget Eye... I'll check my records and if not I might grab a copy through GOG. You also mentioned Planescape, so that is confirmed, I will definitely get that.
Any more for any more?

Starting with UAKM the series gets very very different (meaning "much better"). Tex Murphy: Overseer is actually a remake of the first Tex (the one with the driving crap), but without the driving crap and much expanded in general.
I second Planescape: Torment as a great choice if you haven't played it yet. The first Thief (though FPP) is a superb immersive experience not to be missed as well. Just get over your FPS phobias.
...Simon the Sorcerer 1, Quest for Glory 1-5, Alone in the Dark 1-3, Riven - some of my favorites
The Last Express - visually unique adventure game that also started the time rewind craze in gaming.
From lesser known adventure games: Journeyman Project 2 & 3 (excellent atmosphere and sci-fi tech, especially in 2), Bioforge -weird and slightly actiony moody techno-thriller from Origin, Realms of the Haunting (FPS elements!), Scratches - excellent indie horror game with a slow pace, but a wonderful build up towards the horror, seriousness and a very satisfying ending, Return to Mysterious Island - one of the best and most innovative adventures of last decade - with focus on survivalist and inventory management elements, Feeble Files - very funny sci-fi dystopia from Simon the Sorcerer creators and your choice no 1 if you're an adventure puzzles masochist.

Oh! Yes, that is a good one. Very, very dark, but worth owning.
I can also only recommend you get SystemShock 2. It... well, the graphics have not aged very well, but in terms of atmosphere and replayability, it is a must have. Also not too much of a "typical frenzied FPS", more like Thief with guns.
Thanks to the latest Humble Bundle, I have spare Steam keys for FTL and Eets Munchies.

Oh, they've aged splendidly methinks. But replayability... it gives you a great sense of freedom of choice - that's true, but I think it's more to make you feel your decisions matter than to offer THAT worthwhile replays.
UPDATE: Too late! To the one who got the games: have fun. :)
Not Steam-related, but I have an entire bundle to give away, the latest from Indie Royale: http://www.indieroyale.com/

Well competition is already over :). But I got more keys I'm going to give away eventually so :P. I'll be in touch Adeel!
I'll gladly give The Cat Lady steam key to someone who PMs me first!;) All I'd like in return is a good name for a game character;)
Okay I have a Hearthstone beta key and since I got several games from other nice AGSers in this thread I decided to share it. Please PM me if you're interested! These things are still pretty damn rare afaik so please don't let it go to waste! :p
EDIT: And it's gone! Nobody here wanted it in ~24 hours so it went to a different community!
Thanks again, Peder and Grim, for the Cat Lady key.

Oh, maybe some fresh blood will be good. There's still loads of quality maps being made.
On the other hand, Steam might lose connection more today.

How do we get this? Is there a special thing to do? It's coming up as 50% off at £7.49, but no mention of getting it free.
Oh I just found the info. It expired at 10am yesterday, not 10pm today :(

There are 20 people currently online... Can we assume L4D is dead? Maybe that's why they're giving it away for free... I'm disappointed. Anyone fancy a game?;)
Zombies?... again? is this still running? :-D

People still make loads of maps, just played a 2hr session with 4 buddies, on a custom map and it was rather fun.
Maybe my mistake was downloading L4D2 BETA? I'm updating L4D2 (not BETA) right now, maybe there's more people playing there. For some reason I thought that the party moved over to beta... Anyway, 53% updated, shouldn't take long now;)
EDIT: It was bloody 18GB. Took ages to download...

Frozen Synapse
OH, I'd LOVE Monaco actually! (I should learn to read, you said PM not reply ;) I guess I'll wait a day or so and then PM you)
Okay, so it's not quite "FREE" keys that I have to give away, but I have TWO (2) 25% off coupons for Broken Age (the DoubleFine Adventure), and I've just realized they're only good for five more days! ACT NOW! Don't delay!
P.S. This offer in no way implies any warranty of any kind about the quality, content, entertainment value, enjoyability, etc. of the game. I have not yet been able to play it. My laptop can play a 3D FPS, but somehow it doesn't meet the graphical prerequisites of a 2D adventure game. :-\

Pretty sure there's some key-fishing going on here, and that is sad. The only remdedy I can think of is a ten-year project to give all fishing bots noses, and then break them, and then teaching them to type, with their noses. It can be done, with science.

Haven't used it myself yet, and while it is geared towards RPGs, it seems like it could also be used to create sprites for use in AGS!

I've got Divine Divinity (https://www.gog.com/game/divine_divinity) up for grabs. It expires some time in January, so you'll have to redeem it before that.

Fans of the classics should know that Golden Axe (http://store.steampowered.com/app/34276/) is temporarily available for free on Steam.

Anyone interested in a 30% coupon for Gremlins Inc? I've also got a booster pack for Camera Obscura, but I'm not really into steam cards.

Again not a Steam key, and you can currently get it for free if you are willing to get a gog account and download and install the GOG Galaxy client, but if someone wants System Shock 2, mention it here, and if you're a real life AGSer, I'll link it to you!
Just played it myself recently, and as an avid "meh"-er of pre-2003 3D games (especially "Doom games" :D), I still strongly recommend this one- although I admit I used texture mods and such. I haven't looked forward to playing a game when I'm not playing it in many years, and haven't had it be so easy to complete a game (in terms of desire and motivation, not in terms of difficulty) in a long time.

It wouldn't be on steam, though, only on gog. I know it is a hassle of having yet another account, but in terms of gog, I'd say it is well worth it, especially because they have such a large focus on the classic games so many of us here developed our love of adventure through.
You still want it on gog, ex-human?
Thanks babar, but a gog account is useless for me, since I don't do any sort of electronic payments. Steam's the only provider of human-currency "point cards"...
I can't stress enough how awesome System Shock 2 is, though! Anyone who hasn't played it should give it a try and marvel at the atmosphere!
uhm... I have a GOG account, never paid a "penny" or was asked to give my credit card info. (Only reason I got it was cause a friend bought me some games on GOG... so I had to create the account and claim the games (roll) ).
So technically, you can have a free account and get free games. ;)
Had a go at Greenmangaming's mystery bundles and got some neat stuff out of it, so here's the stuff I didn't care about that some other people might like. (All Steam codes)

Shattered Haven (2 codes)
State Of Anarchy

Since I participate in giveaways, and trading on Steam, my profile has been public for a long time. Indie Gala were simply, as you described, overloaded and overwhelmed at the time.
I tried later and got the key on my first try. I even managed to finish the game in one sitting after that. Quite a good game it is, and the inclusion of trading cards is the icing on the cake!

Normality giveaway on IndieGala at the moment. A free Steam key but you'll need to create an IndieGala account thingy and link your Steam, fairly straightforward. I see now this isn't the first time they've done a giveaway, as mentioned by Adeel, another goddamn account to signup and login to and allow access to your life etc but maybe this one is worth it if they do giveaways fairly often. This appeared in my twitter, and I have always wondered about this game.

Also, it's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, not Far Cry 3...

Hi folks, i was wondering if anyone might help me, I was given a steam code to test a game on steam, however I have not used a steam code in a while now and I am very confused as to how/where to input the code I was given.
I went to Steam/Games/Redeem a Steam Wallet Code
However this area dose not seem to have any relation to inputting a code, but rather its asking me to create an account? I am a bit confused because I already have a steam account.
I also tried to look in Steam/Games/Activate a Product on Steam
But this area also seem unrelated to inputting a code, I think it seems to be an area for developers to upload game projects?
If anyone has any recent experience of using codes with steam perhaps they could help me?
EDIT: Nevermind It was Activate a product on steam option... im all sorted!

chrono.gg and fanatical.com (formerly BundleStars) provide pretty deep discounts with the former gives a large discount on one particular title a day and the latter providing discounts on individual games and also packs of assorted games (normally on the lower end quality wise but you can pick up some real hidden gems).
Sites like the Humble Store and GreenManGaming also provide alternative sales for Steam games if that's your preference.

Oh, I totally missed this, sorry for the late reply. I've played a bit of Where The Water Tastes Like Wine because it totally looked like my type of game (narrative driven! Storytelling! American folk tales!), but I found it to be a huge disappointment. Apart from feeling
extremely pretentious (and this is coming from someone who absolutely loves artsy fartsy stuff like Kentucky Route Zero or David Lynch or avant-garde music), the gameplay is just awful. Maybe the devs felt like they had to introduce more game-y stuff in order for it to not be a visual novel, but they did not quite manage to pull it off and the gameplay aspects actually get in the way of the storytelling and the flow. Big "eh, thanks but no" from me.
Two keys up for grabs:
EXAPUNKS (https://store.steampowered.com/app/716490/EXAPUNKS/)
and
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
First to reply here gets the game of their choice!

So whoever replies next can grab one still!
Well, okay. Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark looks interesting.

GTA V is free in the Epic store.
I'm only seeing Civ 6.
I've ended up with all the Civ games, but the last one I played properly was Civ2. (And I was never particularly good at it.) If I were to play one now, which would you recommend?
Graphics-wise I'm fine with all of them.

A history of Civilization is a bit funny, as they were constantly experimenting with rules and feature design, sometimes changing core mechanics in updates, and when you think they finally reached something concise they surprise you by resetting everything in the next game.
Curiously, Civ2 is often regarded as the "best civ game", even though it had numerous bad design decisions (some of which transferred from Civ1). Maybe because it was simple and its flaws could be tolerated for simplicity sake. And it created truly random worlds with bizzare land patterns.
Civ3 was first one made by new developer (Firaxis), they introduced very interesting concepts: trade requiring actual routes rather than caravan units and trade goods having distinct effect on game; also first game featuring state borders, so finally opponents could not randomly wander a settler into your land :).
Civ4 iirc was the last one featuring giant maps and empires, and also last one that had rectangular tiles. It had 2 big updates, and main game combined with both updates finally made a pretty logical system of rules, from what I recall. It was the first game where you could upgrade units with perks as they leveled up, allowing you to create extremely powerful veteran armies (so long as they stay alive).
Oh, and, it was also first fully moddable game, introducing open XML-like scripts, and people were creating all kinds of mods and total conversions with it. You could go into the data files, change few dozen of strings and create a completely new terrain type with it's own bonuses for your game.
Starting with Civ5 there are hex tiles, and maps became smaller afaik. Also combat rules changed again. There appeared to be units that shoot at range of x2 hexes, siege units that can only attack cities, and cities had garrison that may attack sieging units on its own. Culture became more important than ever (culture appeared first in Civ3, and its effect on the game gradually increased since).
I did not play Civ6 but I heard that maps are even smaller, and it is more focused on managing small states rather than doing endless conquest in Civ2 style.
If anyone fancies an old-school RTS, Total Annihilation is up for grabs for free on GOG.
