Title: From a teacher
Post by: on Sun 03/10/2004 03:45:43
Hello, I'm a 5th grade teacher who spent a lot of my childhood playing Kings Quest, Space Quest, and Police Quest (among others). I even bought the book that discussed how Ms Williams designed her games.
I just discovered AGS, and have been working on games for my classroom. I couldn't find any contact information in regards to licensing. If someone could point me in the right direction, it would be much appriciated.

You're in luck, there is no license really.

Chris pretty much says do what ever you want with the engine and have fun.

also, watch out, someone around here has a thing for teachers!

Yep, no licensing. But it's nice if you give Chris some credit somewhere. He did do all of this great work.

Welcome, and good luck. Seriously. Fifth graders are crazy sometimes. :)

No licencing? Does that mean you can sell your games?
Or am I being a n00b?

There is actually a license, but it only wavers Chris Jones from any responsibility when you make your game (e.g. copyright issues).

Also, the legal info page has some important info in regards to commercial sales of your games and third-party licenses. It's best to have a read, so the legal info page is here: http://www.agsforums.com/aclegal.htm

Apart from that, go crazy.

Of course you can. But beware of licenses of utilities used WITHIN AGS, such as the MP3 encoder. You have to pay the MP3 inventores royalty fees. So use the MP3-less release of AGS and use OGG (freeware) instead. Other than that, sell away. Ionias did, with "The Adventures of Fatman" (Socko! Entertainment). He used to sell it for $15 a pop, and it sold fairly well.

Sweet, I would have to watch for everything though, just like Quantum said, like the extra things inside of the game. What about the program I used to create the sprites? Would that create a problem?

Technically no. But its better that you did have the program legally, I would imagine.

Why, hello! I never noticed this thread here before. What is a Fifth Grader? How old are they approximately and also, how might one best come on to you?

Yufster doesn't live in the U.S., so she doesn't know, Lost. :)

Basically it goes like this:
Kindergarten: 5 years
1st thru 12th grade: 6 thru 18 years of age
Then college anywhere after that

(And, if you want to know, 1st-5th is usually "elementary school", 6th-8th is middle school or junior hgh school, 9th thru 12th is always high school) :)

Actually junior high is generally 7th-9th grade, or at least it used to be. It's probably the same as middle school these days.

Hmm...where else can Reno be? The only Reno I know is in Nevada.

She doesn't live in Reno the city; she's been eaten by loveable Moroccan actor Jean Reno, and currently resides halfway through his digestive tract.

Heh, computers don't fit in digestive tracts.

You should see Jean Reno's digestive tract.

The 18-year old woman, however, you take no issue with.

But what Pesty said.
