Title: Game Development Team
Post by: Neocom on Mon 02/07/2007 00:47:55
Neocom is the concept I had for the name of a game development company for developing adventure games. I am not a programmer, so unfortunately I cannot program my own games. I am not a game designer either, although I have worked on a project or two in the past as a game designer. Please don't let this put you off, I may not have anything to show, however, I seek those who would be interested in working as part of a team as opposed to working alone on their projects. I'm not looking for the best, I am more interested in those who are eager to work as a team regardless of their talents. Please don't think twice to send me a PM if you're interested or if you want some more information.

Thanks.

So you're not a game designer...you're not a programmer...

What are you? This is a mystery for the ages.

I'm an all-rounder. I would say that I'm the founder of the company, therefore it is my job to oversee the organisation and make sure that everyone is doing their job. I wouldn't mind composing some game concepts though.

An all-rounder means you can do a lot of things, not that you can't do anything.

The interesting thing about most programmers, designers, and other people with skills useful to game development... is that most of the time they can organize themselves.

It seems like you want to create a team for the sake of having a team you can "organize" and everything else like the actual game and it's quality are of lower priority. I don't really get the point. You just picked a name and you're basically saying "hey i'm looking for people who will make everything and I will be the boss". No project to show us and no qualifications required to join your team except "eager to work as a team regardless of their talents". Not really encouraging to be honest.

I think this is interesting! In fact, I find that when I'm working on something I need someone to tell me when to stop or else I never get finished; I'll join when my workload becomes less.

Exactly!

Especially in the technical field (and artistic, for that matter) it's crucial that the 'leader' or 'director' of the group needs to be an all-rounder, meaning he or she is savvy in all aspects of development. I've had real world experience of having a boss who wasn't really able to contribute at all to the projects we handled. She was only a hindrance and a complicator, and naturally when confronted about her incompetency, the excuse was always "I'm not supposed to know about these things. I'm supposed to lead". That type of attitude doesn't fly in today's business world. The traditional business hierarchy is breaking down and workgroups are becoming more and more worker-oriented. Go to any media-related office and see how many managers don't have a background in either IT or art. I'd guess very few. Google is one company leading the way to a better business future where we aren't treated like monkeys anymore. Viva La Revolucion!!

...And well, I'm just very happy I don't have to work with said person ever again.

So what I'm saying is that especially in a tight-knit indie community like this, people are able to work well with each other because the premise is different: a) People are here on their own account b) They work for free c) They're enthusiastic about what they do d) They usually have a strength in a field that allows them to start their own projects without business hierarchy. Indie communities provide developers with freedom, why put up with a boss?

And that's why I think you won't get a lot of help :D.

i like how people throw around the word "company" everyone thinks because they have a name for a company that they are a "company". currently its one guy who wants to organise people but has no one to organise right now.

Wel..

He did say "team", and not "company", if that's something.

Either way, If (s)he had something to offer, it would certainly work in his favour I think...

Basically he just wants to own a comany and collect bucks from it while artists do all the work for him.

Well, think of it this way; you want to get work on (for example) game art and if you had worked in this GDT (Game Development Team) you'll get more things to show.

1) you'll be able to improve

2) you'll get used to working in teams

3) get used to deadlines

4) be able to experiment and therefore be versatille

5) since there would be other people with many different ideas, you may get inspiration from them and them from you.

6) it's fun

7) I know you could probably do most of the above without being in a team, but teamwork is great as people could bring in things which might be unexpected and so making your game would be more interesting in the sense that you don't really know how it's gonna turn out until around the end.

8) life experience (something to write into your diary at last!)

9) insert reason number 9 here

10) everyone's a crittic! And everyone needs critz! At least if your working in a team, you don't have to post in the crittics lounge and fear about spoilers!

I still say the best way to make a game is to:

1) Do it all yourself

2) Anything you cannot do, ask other people to help you, but NOT to do most of the work FOR you.

This is what I'm doing with my game. I had a team of people help me flesh out the storyline and gameplay details, but nobody did any real work for me.

Use the sticky threads in the chat forum to advertise for team members or assistance or whatever.

It's always best to release something of your own, so that people can see what you're capable of.
