Title: Gamedev.net 4E5 competition
Post by: on Thu 08/06/2006 19:50:03
Hi folks,

You may be interested in a contest I've just launched over at GameDev.net (http://www.gamedev.net/) called Four Elements V (http://www.gamedev.net/community/contest/4e5/).

It's fairly simple; we give you four 'Elements' and six months, and you give us a game, made using the tools and technologies of your choosing (provided the licensing is OK). The best entries win prizes.

This year's elements are "Emotion, Economics, Emblem, and Europe." The contest site and forum have more information on how the elements must be included.

Interesting combination of "elements".

Out of interest, have your previous competitions turned out many results? Experience here suggests (to me at least) that shorter competitions are much more successful than longer ones.

Check the website - you can see the entrants for the previous years. There were 30-40 entrants last year (elements were robots, pirates, ninjas, zombies). I've been playing the winner a bit - beautiful game!

As SteveMcCrea pointed out, last year turned out 46 entries. I know what you mean about short competitions being successful, but last year I had people asking me for time extensions :) 48-hour competitions tend to be more successful than week-long ones, but I reckon that once you make things long enough - i.e. in the order of months - then it picks up again.
