Title: Games that make you sick!
Post by: Kinoko on Thu 08/12/2005 13:33:13
Slightly misleading topic there.

Do any games affect you strongly enough that you get a physical reaction? I could name a few that have made me cry, but nothing does as much for me as Terranigma (SNES). Just thinking and reading about that game is enough to make feel goose bumps, cry or just make my stomach weird.

I've just been reading a thread about it for the last couple of hours and I feel sick to the stomach a little just for being so emotionally charged. I can name a few books that do this to me, they just happen to hit the right note (Never Ending Story is one) but Terranigma takes the cake as far as games are concerned. The way it tells the story is just brilliant and the ending leaves you feeling sad and satisfied and happy and insane at the same time.

After a little thought, I honestly think a lot of it has to do with how much the game makes me want to just envelope myself in that world. I feel sad having to wrench my brain back to reality.

Honestly, it's a feeling like being in love. Like falling in love, rather, and still being in those beginning stages where all you want to think about is that person.

I get a weird feeling everytime I hear the Monkey Island tune and see the Island appear with "Deep in the Caribbean". I suppose that is just nostalgia, though.

I can't think of a game that gets me a such a reaction as you're describing. The early Sierra games (KQ3, SQ2) did give me occasional "shocks" (what with the sudden appearances of Mananan) that actually "jerked" me, left me dazed and forced me to pause the game to realise it wasn't real life.

Normally, the games that have this type of effect on me are RPG's, because the stories get so deep and involving. I think the first game that ever got any kind of emotional response from me was Lunar: The Silver Star, followed by Lunar: Eternal Blue, both on Sega CD. When I played the Playstation versions not too long ago, the feeling I got wasn't "nostalgia," it was more of, "I feel like I'm home again."

playing Soul Reaver 2 always fills me with an overwhelming sense of joy, i'd probably cry if somebody stole it (and eat their soul).

There were parts in Phantasmagoria that made me ill. Like the bits where she gets force-fed the guts (if I remember correctly). It was pure shock value with little point to it. That would have been okay if the actual game was up to snuff, but that was boring and shitty too. That's why I think it's one of the worst games ever.

I think the new trailer to Killzone promises something that will evoke emotion from me.

The only games that have really taken my breath away are the Silent Hills, Metal Gear Solids, and the opening to Final Fantasy X.

Oh, and when I was younger, Resident Evil II  and House of the Dead rocked my emotions.

I honestly can't play more than a half hour of Doom 3 before getting so twitchy that I jump at noises that aren't even there...

Oh, and in Wing Commander 2 when Spirit  died...well, I didn't cry, but I was down in the dumps for ages. I liked her.

Other than that, the only games that really have any visceral effect on me are those with an ambience that I really like. For example, any Star Wars game, especially KOTOR 1 & 2 and BattleFront, affect me because I tend to feel more at home in the SW universe than in real life sometimes... If I'm depressed, playing those games helps.

Yeah, I found Doom 3 nerve racking for a little while.  But after 233,403,234 levels of the same monster filled hallways...the tension disappears.

The MI theme music definitely floods my memory with friendly thoughts.

I can't really think of any games that really effected me in a deep (or harmful) way.  Oh wait, Castlevania III used to totally freak me out...when I'd sit in my basement as a kid with the lights off.  Those vampires would scare the hell out of me!  Oh, and the opening screen of The Black Cauldron.  For whatever reason, I think that is the best damn theme music ever, even though it's only 3 notes.  That game also scared the hell out of me...for whatever reason.

ICO

The game had such an impact that although I had a great desire to play it again I couldn't immediately because I was afraid of what it invoked in me. Very powerful. The physical description that comes to me is one of lightness or airy-ness(?).

Sick as in bad or good? :-\ I really dont see why sick would be good, but most of you seem to talk about good feelings... Anyhoo! Games that really wake my emotions are all the MI games. Especially CMI :) And another game series that make me all emotional is... Half Life! They really catch the right atmosphere at the right time! Especially hl2! :)

Yeah Soul reaver 2! Or rather whichever episode concluded most of the story line (I reckon it was the game after this one) the ending of that ruled when the bad guy got his come uppance!

FF9 made me cry. Yup! I could associate myself with the lead character in that game than any other FF game!

No game has ever made me cry, though, the scene at the end of the first disc in Final Fantasy VII was touching. But I was only 10 or so the first time I saw it. :P

But by just hearing the Monkey Island-melody on a good ol' adlib makes me want to weep of happiness. MI1 and 2 rocks so much that it's undescribable. ;D

The first Klonoa game on the Playstation... :'(

When the prince confesses to Klonoa that he doesn't actually exist, and that the prince just dreamed him to help save his kingdom.

Its a short CG, beautifully animated even by Namco standards.

Only people who have witnessed it will understand.

Jeez, I blubbed like a baby.  ;D

I'm at work today, it's almost 0 degrees, I didn't have time to eat breakfast or put my garbage out and despite it being Saturday tomorrow and me being in dire need of a good sleep in, I have to get up -extra- early tomorrow to go a stupid meeting more than two towns away for a 3 day job I'll have next year.

Yet, I'm strangely happy and relaxed today. I feel like I had really good sex last night - but I didn't (unfortunately)! A good discussion of Terranigma is -like- unto good sex.

that'll be Defiance, wasn't too keen on that one, i didn't like the way i couldn't control the camera and i didn't like being limited to just the reaver either, and i missed the elemental fonts that were in SR2 that controlled which power the reaver had, plus the "puzzles" were too samey and boring and there weren't any cool demons until late on and Kain killed those guys easily.
i don't like the way the story was concluded in such a boring game and there were some continuity errors that are just annoying, it'd be great if they made another proper Soul Reaver game where you just get to play as Raziel with some awesome puzzles.

but apart from all that another game that really does something for me is EVE Online, which i haven't ever actually played but it's so beautiful i just love looking at screenshots.

Silent Hill 3. It's like a psychotic thriller mixed with a horror.
Excellent shit, i have to bring a bottle of water whenever i play so it doesn't look suspicious.

I think that I've mentioned this game a bunch of times in these forums but still I have to metnion it once again.

Bard's Tale I

Very old game by Interplay! A decent game.

Probably the first rpg with 3d graphics (well... you know back in 1987... still the city looked so real. The catacombs where freaky...) The monster portraits all had great animation  and the music. Ah the music. Through the lousy speaker of a PC 8086! But the composer had arranged the notes to be so quickly and close with eac other that you thought that you had polyphony although you didn't. And what's even best I transfered the music to my mobile phone so now, everytime that for no reason I think of Skara Brae (the city), I know that my mobile phone is ringing (although I can't hear the ringing consiously)

And I'm not sure if it is abandoware yet! It doesn't seem to be...

The camera WAS annoying in defiance! Sure, I wasn't saying it was better than soul reaver!
Defiance was a very average game.

I just liked seeing that bad guy get killed twice!

Beyond Good or Evil.

It is truly a storytelling gaming masterpiece. I have yet to come upon something forcing me to play continuosly for 13 hours straight and evading all night sleep.

Shining Force

Gem on the Genesis/Megadrive. I was small, and felt a knot in my stomach whenever someone of my party died on the battlefield. They were all so true and genuine in my heart. They were real. Now when I play it, I have become a cynical bastard and coldly sacrifice my fighters by pure strategic calculations and laugh about whenever Arthur hits the dust. Bloody wanker. But Lowe and Hans must not die. Never!

Sonic the Hedgehog

Do you not just HATE the underwater scenarios? Did you not fear everytime you came upon Labyrinth Zone? Did you not amediatly got so wired and stressed by the horrid drowning tune and countdown that your face turned into a fearsome grimace of misery. Drowning in Sonic is the worst way to die.. ever..

Oh GOD 2ma2 don't get me started on those! The water stages were my worst ... countless hour after hour did I used to spend trying to get past them! I can still hear Sonic gasping for breath when I close my eyes ... Arr-ek.

I have completed Riven once, and never again, because I can't bear too. The story gets to me too much.. the one time I completed it, it was pretty upsetting for me.

I mean, there is no real sequel to Riven in my eyes. There's Myst III/IV, sure, but to me, they're not sequels in spirit. Anyone know what I mean?

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans - a.k.a Warcraft 1

Cold! This game often succeeds in freezing my back. Dark forests, brutal orcs, dark magic versus holy powers, red blood and screams of defenseless peasants... well, classical and great. One of coolest things on this planet.

It's damn sad that Blizzard ruined this deep stuff in WC2 with stupid wacky voices, light-green disney-cartoon-like happyland orcs & other bullshit (though as a strategy game, it was still good) and went downhill from there.

Quake II

Since my best friend leads a Q2 clan, still denies the fact that it's so outdated and pointless game and keeps recording long demos & showing them whenever I visit him, I've developed physical reactions to this game. I *NEED* a smoke whenever I see it! (smokers should understand difference here - between words "need" and "want")
So we walk out for a smoke and I get spared from this again.

emulated NeoGeo Games (Samurai Shodown IV, Art Of Fighting 2, KOF 2000)

After a long workday full of insults, accusations and stupid assignments, there's nothing that releases my free breathing, lowers blood pressure and calms me down better than finishing one of named games quickly. It's amazing how much these old 2D fighting games both teach (random japanese SNK animator = superhuman) and relax me.

And if I want to lose some hair and break some keyboard, I play HL2:Lost coast with High Dynamic Range Lighting turned on. Suffer, you lousy video card, suffer!

Blimey dude! That demo struggles on my computer without dynamic lighting on!  It's sluggish with high texture backgrounds, and is fine with medium backgrounds.

Well, as a fellow Terranigma lover, I can wholeheartedly agree about the ending, it was really movingÃ,  the first time I played it. Just brilliant. You can't really compare that game to any other...
The only other game to do something similiar though, would be Grim Fandango, probably...

I remember yelling at "King of Chicago" since even forcing 150mhz pentium to run on 2 Mhz didn't make gun aiming possible... It just moved at hyperspeed!  Stupid game!
Then again, I would love to see a remake, with a bit polished (adventure!) style/interface. I loved the story, graphics and atmosphere.

We were full of tears  :'( when we finished Syberia 1.And after Kate returned to her journey we were  ;D .

Monkey island 1 still make us LOL and we act like a kids when we play it it's so BEST in series with that insult sword fight.

Sanatorium made our mind feel strange

And Martin Mystere was THE greatest SH*T we were waiting for that one ( I am MM fan for as long as i remember and my girlfriend read it now and than ) and it turned to be THE WORST game ever.

Dreamweb has good ambience. Captain Blood too. Fate of Atlantis is my most pleasant gaming experience on the whole. Flashback shaped my aesthetic sense. Shadow of the Beast too. But there's been no games to evoke something so amazingly strong like a good book or comic or movie have managed so far.

F.E.A.R scares the living daylights out of me.
Nothing like bloodstained little girls walking around you in the dark to get the blood pumping.
When I play it I get this thin layer of cold sweat all over and I get really on edge,
ie. Freaking out when my brother slams the door.

It gets you so sucked into the game that when you do get scared, you get properly scared.

I was thinking about this, and I feel that there are some really good games out there that elicit responses from me like no books or movie can. A video game actually gets you involved in the storyline, so if you are playing a game you like, as a character you like, with NPC's that you like, you eventually will get a kind of "connection" with it.

I mentioned already Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Legend of Dragoon had some similar aspects. There's one point where you meet a little robot that gives its life for you... That made me cry heartily.

Also, I played Doom 3, all the Silent Hills, Sanatorium, etc... with no problem. But I just got done playing Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. I wet myself about 38 times, and there were 17 specific instances in which I felt I was close. At one point in time, when I was in my hotel room and had to escape by running through adjoining rooms, then out across the rooftops, all the while experiencing vertigo... When I thought I was home free and bullets started tearing through the walls, I actually screamed... in terror!

kuh-THOO-loo. Some say kuh-THOOL or, as they pronounced it in the first Max Payne, chuh-TOO-lah.

www.callofcthulhu.com

Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones, demon gods that came here from distant stars before man walked the earth. Among his numbers are Azathoth, Nyarlathotep, Father Dagon and Mother Hydra, Shub-Nigguroth, Yog-Sothoth, and a host of others.

The particular enemies you fight in Call of Cthulhu, Dark Corners of the Earth, are the Deep Ones, a cult of the followers of Dagon and Hydra. Cthulhu is only present in the game as stone idols, which, if you stay around them too long, make your character go insane and kill himself.

People have been saying that video games don't have the same effect on you as books or movies... CoC:DCotE is based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, and the first half of the game is almost like playing through "Shadow Over Innsmouth," one of his most popular stories (although not one I cared for particularly, the game made me want to read it again).

Lost Paradise? Does that have the first metal goth band going on adventures singing about doom and gloom? Oh wait, that's paradise lost! (PS - I like being silly on purpose)

Ha ha yeah that robot puzzle pissed me off! I'm guessing you are stuck on the moving it past the dangers section? I'm afraid I had it on the x-box, not the PC. There is a logical way of doing it, getting into the right spaces and moving at the exact right time. But it DID take me ages and I nearly gave up. It's only my sheer persistance that got me through I guess.
