I just got this very confusing email.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATTN,
Dear love one,

MY name is george mamadou age 27 a student of computer science.

I am writing with deep sorrow and weeping concerning my condition of living here.
My life is in danger crying for your help in a family of seven (7) concerning the death of my father and brother. My father is Dramane mamadou a well known rich man. we are occupaying a small village near abidjan capital city of (cote d ivoire) being a well known cocao and coffe producer a transporter, gold and diamond dealer.

The sudden disapearation of our father and brother brought our family separation from each other, but for me I am with my uncle at bassam a town close to abidjan. On the 9th of may my father was arrested by unknown soldiers at about 8pm when we were taking our dinner in the presence of our mother and his children they kill him and his body were not seen till today, after his arresting my elder brother 30, went in search of him was beaten and he became parallised of which he later died in the hospital here.

On the night my father was arrested, the soldiers looted our home took away my father coffre-fort (save) contaning his jewelries and money valued over fifty five million fca (55,000,000fca) it was after the second raiding of our home that I ran away because these men raped my younger sister age 17 and turtured my mother becaused she resisted in opening the family safe, still mouring for the death of her husband and son on her sick bed she revealed the family WILL, which is my purpose of writing.

For we northerners have been marginalised in this country and my father been a rich man from the northern side was assasinated out of greediness by his business/political opponents, with the intention of claiming his wealth, and they succeded even his younger brother was murderd also.
Now I am afraid becaused of my age I don't know what to do I discoverd in my father's will that he deposited Seven Million Dollars ($7,000,000.00) for the family now I am the only hope of the family.

My sick mother and my sister's situation lead to my surferings now, due to the political situation in this country, I have to leave my education to support my poor family, the condition here is too bad for us, we are refugee in our mothers land for now and I don't know when this will be over, unless you help us but now we have decided to seek for your assistance to provide us with the account where the money will be transfered to as our father's foreign partner.

Because of my age, I don't know what to do. If we don't do something now we may also lose this money, so we need an external Asissitance that will present as our father's foriegn business partner for the claim of the money, PARDON if you can help my family out from this by asissting us for the transfer and investment in your country, you will have your reward and percentage is negotiable and this is our only hope for now.

Please help us confidentialy as you can and God will bless you and your family.

Yours sincerly

mamadou and Family.

I don't know what to make of this.  Should I reply or just ignore it?  It doesn't appair to be spam and the email address proves he is who he says he is.

Can't see why he's looking to me for help.  He's older than me, and nowhere near me.  It's not a mistake of address; he sent it to roberteric@rain-day.com.

I´ve received similar mails before.... In spanish...

Maybe it is just a coincidence that another son of an african president (in my case it was the son of an african president) e-mailed me demmanding money for a good cause, but it smells bad. It looks more than an intelligent (even multilingual) spam process is being made.

Another one I received was a cuuuute photo of a baby... whose parents claimed that they needed money for a surgery for him. I would like to think that it was also spam, and I didn´t replied, but it can be plausible that people in front of such desesperated ocassions start massive mailings. It is your choice.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Whatever you decide, do send an email off to Gabe and Tycho detailing approximately how many idiots they put in each hole.

Darth Mandarb

This is spam.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I beg of you not to fall for this!

I wish horrible pain and agony on ALL spammers!!

DEATH TO SPAM!!!

It's not just spam, it's a financial scam.  If you showed willing, the next few e-mails would build towards conning money out of you somehow.

MrColossal

look at that, i also got the same email

One day, I'm going to say "hi" to one of those friendly nigerian long-lost uncles of mine, and maybe we'll get talking. I'd be interested in what he has to say.

Matt Brown

haha, I got the exact same one too...what are the odds..

judging by the other posts here...I'd say pretty good
word up

Grundislav

HA! I got it yesterday! I clicked on this topic because the name sounded so familiar to me, yet I couldn't place why...

Looks like a new spin on an aging scam.  The old one had variations from inheritance to a company being shut down by the government.  It only counted upon people's greed to garner responses.  This one preys a bit upon emotions as well.

Death to spammers indeed.  It seems odd to me that more of us don't have a friend or family member (that we know of) that spams for a bit of extra income.  Given the multitude of spam that's sent out, the fact that many of us are quite computer literate and know others of the same mindset, and our international membership, it seems like somebody here ought to know somebody who does this sort of thing on a regular basis.  If you do, and you're just not speaking up, I urge you to consider killing them.  I'm not heartless, make it a swift & virtually painless death if you wish.

Meowster

Most spam that is sent comes from one of three main companies in the world.

Although I'm not sure about the email scams... they're individuals, methinks. But are they the same individuals... or different ones???

Gilbert

Hehe, what a coincidence, I got exactly the same mail today! <--Truth

It sounds attractive!

* Gilbot V7000a is going to fall into the trap.

I got my Postini quarantine summary this morning. Our company uses this spam filtering service to take out the spam before it even arrives to you. You can still read them at a web site, though just in case they filter out a real message.

In the last 7 days I had 46 Virus-infected emails and 371 spam messages. I am amazed that you guys haven't seen this type of stuff before...

By the way, if you are worried that your ATM card has been compromised, send me your card number and PIN and I can check it out for you  ;D

Today I´ve received a mail with virus!!! It was a faulire delievery with some file attached, so I guess it was that new worm.... Fortunately, I´ve received it in the school!  ;D I´ve been close to open it delieverately, but a little angel said to me from my shoulder "Nooooo!"

I finally threw it to the trash...  :-X
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

TerranRich

I love how the media says "There is a new virus! A WORM! IT WILL KILL EVERYONE!!! But there IS a way to protect yourself! It's a secret that only WE know!" And come to find out, all you have to do is... not open any attachments!

Isn't that common sense by now? "Ooh, look, an email from someone I don't know! It has an attachment. Hmm, never heard of .doc.exe before, it MUST be safe!"

Anyone dumb enough to open up attachments without knowing the person or checking it for viruses vigorously deserves to be a target of a computer virus/worm. :P

Heh, kidding, of course. ;)
Status: Trying to come up with some ideas...

DragonRose

Farlander: The virus or the Angel? ;D

But for those of us who can't stand those stupid stupid "I am from Nigeria and I want to give you money for no reason" email scams, check out www.africanscam.co.uk .  Some guy outscams his scammers, and makes the scammer look like a moron in the process. It's hilarious. But it's a big download, so be warned.
