Title: ghost hunting
Post by: on Mon 11/06/2007 21:43:42
Hola! I went on a ghost walk in one of the "spookiest" towns in the UK, Lincoln! It was funny :P And I was skeptical at the time! But my friend took some photos of me in various places after the walk, including some of the walk hotspots, and some of the photos have dodgy things in them! So, I'm just wondering if anyone is able to enhance things in photos better than I can.

Starting with the FACE in the window! This one is creepy. I'm sure there are skeptics amongst us, but see what you think. We have not put this in there!! I've tried enhancing various parts of it, but because it's some kind of ghostly reflection, there has been no real joy. On the right of the picture you can see where I've tried to highlight the dull looking face.

And before you ask...NO, I'm not convinced either, but I'm still a bit creeped out! So you know, oposite that window (in front of me) was her with the camera and that's it. This was the empty end of the pub.

PS If you can enhance please re-post the photo. And, please do share your ghostly photos :) I have one more which I'll share once I've managed to highlight the thing I think is spooky in it!!

I totally see it and can enhance it using the newest fanciest spangliest photo technology, developed by the Ghostbusters:

Sorry to be boring but it's just your brain naturally picking out facial features in random patterns wherever it can. It's not much different to anthropomorphising clouds, just in this case you've been told 'ooh ghosts abound!' and you know all the urban folklore and tales and whatnot so you'll naturally see the creepy reflection in the window mist. Notice how the nose, mouth and chin are made up out of the lines made by the brick pattern?

I bet we could go through years of Mittens photos finding 'ghosts' in the pictures :)

With a lot of imagination it looks like some kind of happy monkey, but I've seen better ghost faces.

However there seem to be some orbs.

I would hazard a guess that the orbs are indoor light reflections.

Haah, that's hilarious.
It's obviously:
The Orbs: Reflection of those round bulbs.
The Face: Reflection of his face.
The Other Orb: Light on his collar perhaps?

Of course. Common sense and stuff. But as a profesional ghost hunter you have to ignore occams razor.

Aye, we considered them being orbs...but they probably are just light reflections. I don't get the whole orb thing though...all photo orbs to me just look like dust particles passing the camera etc.

But, I can disprove one person;
QuoteThe Face: Reflection of his face

Have you actually looked which way I'm facing? How can the "face" be facing the same way as me if it's my reflection?? I would need to be on the otherside of the "face", facing the window... Also, the "face" has no cap, the eye on our right is not covered like my eye is...the one thing I will ackknowledge though is that the eyeline of the "face" is EXACTLY the same as mine.

Adam - cheers. I know what you mean! But wait til I get the 2nd photo sorted out. Theres an object in the same place in two pics, which COULD be made up of "brickwork patterns", or, my original guess, something on the camera - but there is absolutely no evidence of it in any other photos so it can't be a camera spot. Still, I'm talking about something you haven't yet seen so I'll post it up asap.

vwg...HAHAHA :D If only it was a friendly casper!

Oh, and thanks for all the quick replies! :)

Yes, the face of an adjacent building.

Hehe, I had an interest in ghost hunting for a time.  I was reading up on it and such.  Then one night I drove down to this old church that was built in the 1800s with my camera and decided to take a few snapshots.

As soon as I pulled up, I took a pic.  I viewed it on the view screen, and there were orbs everywhere!  Then I took another and there were fewer orbs... then I took another and there were even fewer orbs!  Then when I got home, I took a handful of dust and threw it in the air and took a picture of the dust cloud, and guess what I saw.......  more orbs than I could count!

Orbs are just dust particles and such.

I don't really see a face in the window, I see a bunch of smudges.  You can find anything you're looking for in that kind of stuff.  I could post the same picture saying that if you look at the window just right you can see two people having sex.  And given the number of dirty minds, I think many would see it.

I'm a skeptic as far as this kind of thing (or anything supernatural) goes.

Actually, m0ds, it works a little like this:
You know how you can take a lens (say a microscope) and hold it against a wall? It gives you a slight picture if you get the sunlight right.
So, think of it like this: the camera flash (along with the lamps) could focus enough light onto the glass surface of the window, and create a "ghost image". Or maybe the moonlight.
I'm not bashing you, I'm providing a reverse theory of ghosts. For all we know, it could be ghosts, an unnatural force manipulating light and sounds to tell you something, or just light at odd angles. Who knows?
The fun is in the finding out.  ;)

You're absolutely right!  Just now I was looking through some old Mittens photos and I found this:

Based on the facial features seen here:
I think it's safe to say it's Bruce Campbell's ghost.

...or the Gaurdian at the start of Ultima 7....

It could either be Bruce Campbell, or it could be Chris Jones'- he also has eyes, a forehead, and a nose. Come to think of it, it could be Paris Hilton! She has a friggin' big chin...

That's called "Paridolia". The brain needs to find patterns and stablish shapes. It' s very well known in the skeptical world.

Yeah, we see what we want to see, and this is why highly skeptical people never find any evidence of the existence of ghosts...because they don't exist, obviously.

When I was a kid it was a actually a fun hobby to look at the ceiling and find as many faces as I could.   You know those whipped textures they use soemtimes?    You can make out tons of faces in that stuff!!!

I always wanted to grab a ladder and draw the outlines so I wouldn't lose them.

You are playing pool with your own head. I used super sensitive paranormal software to uncover what is going on in your picture. I hope you hit it gently.

Hahahaha  ;D

Well, ghost or no ghost, I think the fact a face - of spirit, brick or other illusion form in the photo is pretty cool!

Anyway. If anyone does have any ghostly encounters please drag this thread up cos I'm interested!!

Ghost photos, huh? My speciality.

Here's a photo I took in the woods north of Vancouver when I took a trip to Canada... I was dissapointed because the shot was way too dark but I didn't see the cloudy face-shaped thing until I finally got home and was looking at the photos on my computer.

Don't believe in ghosts, really. I'm sure there's some explanation, but it's a little odd because the air was very clear when I took the photo. Not a great deal of dust particles or anything.

Anyway, here's the original photo. There's a sort of a face there, with a hand raised up to the left of it. At least that's what it looks like to me.  :)

Here's a copy I enhanced in Photoshop to show the details more clearly.

This reminds me of the whole 'I found a camera in the woods' debacle at the GTAforums. Someone posted photos with lots of creepy things in it(catspiders) from an alleged abandoned camera he found. It turned into a 60 page discussion. There were even people who went out to the supposed location with shotguns...
