Title: Gimp 2.0 released
Post by: shbaz on Tue 30/03/2004 23:51:52
The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org) is now available in it's shiny brand-new 2.0 form. The interface has much improved and there is a "better" windows version. I'm told that people with thousands of fonts have problems opening it and you need to use a debug statement in the launch line like "-nofonts" or something.

Anyways, go, download. Some of the new features include font editing, window docking, and photoshop (psd) files can be opened AND saved.

Yes I joined their mailing list and I knew that several days ago.

The only problem was, still, like in the beta releases, there're always annoying messages about it couldn't load a Chinese font, etc. I don't have time to invest yet.

Yeah, I actually found out several days ago too on the Blender forums but I forgot to tell everyone here.

Unfortunately, the "better" windows version won't run on my Win98.

Even worse, SecondChance, whose job is to create backups of all changed files, did nothing but creating an outdated autoexec.bat file when I tried to get my system back to where it was before installing Gimp2.

whoah!!!! Thank you so much for this information! I'm using The Gimp for nearly all my game images, and I just finished installing The Gimp 2.0! This is really alot better than my previous version 1.2.5! The first thing I noticed is the amount of plugins available, though... im going to look alittle more to the interface, and changes ;)

Now my images just have to be awesome with this update! ;D

Behold the power of stupidity.

What's that supposed to mean? Things like crop, line, circle, etc, aren't as straightforward with the Gimp as other apps, it doesn't make someone stupid.

But RTFM next time.  :D

That's why I said "better." It's a bit buggy, it's been over 3 years in development and there are a LOT of changes. Try posting at the Gimp developers forum for help, they'll probably have a fix up for you.

I use the Gimp 1.2.
I have two copies from magazine CDs, but only one of them has .gif support. I think is because there are legal problems related to the GIF compression algorithm in the USA.

Is it possible to have the GIF exporter feature in the version 2.0?

It's downloaded seperately, because of legal issues.

I knew about the whole shift-clicky thing.. But it's a very odd way to draw lines.. I was just wondering if there was a hidden button I wasn't finding.

And fuck you, Harry ;)

Well the good thing about it was that you can quickly draw lines with nearly every drawing tools (I never tried PS, PSP, etc., so I don't know how they work).

The bad thing was that programming using Ctrl, Shift and Alt clashes with the default hot keys for Chinese input methods, so it's REALLY annoying (especially when you need to hold more than one of them simultaneously, eg. when constrainting to aspect ratio).

Gilbert, don't you know how to program? Edit the code and change the hotkeys..

But then again, I don't know how hard that'd be. Alternatively you could plead to the developers about how inconvenient it is and demand a chinese version.  ;D

No, I don't know how to programme for sure, and I don't want to waste my time looking at these huge sources. And I'm never interested in compiling something for window$.

The input method hotkeys can be changed of course, but I just don't want to.

It's just funny that developers did make localization on their softwares but didn't care on some obvious problems on some systems.

Blender is another program that uses shift and ctrl a lot, it'd probably be terrible for you too.

I would have never thought of it as a potential problem. The Control key is there specifically for things like this, and the shift key is absolutely necessary for typing in most languages. Alt probably stands for Alternate, perhaps an alternative to control.

In the end, it really does suck for people using Chinese keyboards.. perhaps if you posted in the developers forum a friendly coder would change the necessary values and make a friendly Gimp for you? It can't be that hard to do for people who know the code.

Heh there's nothing called Chinese keyboards, we just use US layout keyboards.

Ctrl/Shift or ALT keys when pressed alone are okay most of the time, it's only troublesome when some of these softwares do things also when they're pressed simultaneously.

GIMP 2.0 looks much better than before, but I see that it can't import PSp8 files, and my trial has expired. Anyone know a free program that could convert psp8 files tophotoshop, xcf or some other layered format?

Hmm.. since no one has responded, you could transport them layer by layer in a format like .tga or .tif if it's a necessity.
