Just wondering. I know there ARE other girls around here on the forums but where are you?
Girls, write something here in this thread and let us know you're there! ;D
Because I'm actually curious to know how many active girls that are around and who they are.

Blue, here are a few other female AGS authors I remember because of their games:
Akril15 (the Adventure series)
MoodyBlues (Atapi)
The Ivy (Nanobots, Spooks, Puzzle bots)
ola_66 (Principles of Evil series)
Overall, I've got the impression that girls prefer making games to hanging around the forums. :'(
My GF Tamara (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=10845) is a member although not really forum-active anymore...
There's also:
Sylvr (SilverTrumpet)
BlueAngel
GhostLady
meese72
And..uh..others! Those are some that come to mind. Tabata's a lady, right? Oh, and there was once a gypsysnail, but I think she's gone.
It's funny though, "blue" seems to be popular among the AGS ladies when choosing a username. Guess they figured it would be rather inconspicuous on a domain such as bigbluecup.com, where the mascot is indeed a blue cup, and thereby the color scheme of the forums is largely composed of various shades of blue. These forums are one classy lady. ;D

I'm usually just lurking... but I can still say hi :)
Madness! There are no girls on the internet! Ti... GTF... wait, wrong forums. Sorry, nevermind, just lurking around the thread, watching, waiting...
Auriond is female. Also the person who was making Robots of Dawn is a woman (forgot here name sorry). Plus I suspect Snake's wife who sometimes posts here is a female aswell. :=
Another female here. ;D

Can I ask what's the difference between boys and girls in a software forum? It's not like anyone is going to get a date or something...

Easily.

Aside from me, I think all of the ToaK crew have left the forums. Darty, Y0ke, and BerserkerTails. I don't think any of them post anymore.
I've been called a girl a handful of times in my life and sound like a girl on the phone, does that count? Oh but wait, there's that whole penis thing... forget it.
No I'm not a girl, but my wife (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=11161) is!
My ladyfriend stalks these forums but she is too scared to join. :( I guarantee she will complete a full game before me though!

While we're on the topic of ladyfriends, I don't presently have one. I just started working as a pizza delivery driver so you know I'm practically rolling in dough. Oh...how punny. Wasn't actually intended, I swear.
So, ladyfolk of AGS, submit your applications here to be the next ladyfriend of the infamous monkey_05_06! :D

If I may be so bold to hijack this thread for a moment, would any of the many Girls of AGS be interested in voice acting? Because we're trying to do a voice pack for Quasar (the game in my sig), and get mostly male auditions. We need at least one more female voice to get the voice pack going. Thank you for your time :)
So why do you think online forums attract few females?
It seems that creeps always say "Pics Now" or "t*** or gtfo" whenever a poster admits to being a female. ::)
However, I think adventure games have a larger female fan base. What do you guys think about the portrayal of women in games?

I find it very unlikely that you would find someone on the AGS forums doing the whole "Tits or get the fuck out" routine - one of the things that I've liked about this community since I started actively contributing is that it's one of those rare civilized zones where trolls and assholes are generally summarily exiled, and the immature kids that join up and try to interact in the forum like this is YouTube or something of the like are either forced to grow up or to leave. Hell, I can think of a few great contributors to the AGS community now that came across as absolute morons when they first arrived, but were quickly housebroken.
I've generally seen the AGS community as being fairly lady-friendly, though there aren't a lot of people who openly admit to being women. Sure, there's plenty of immature ribbing that goes on which might be considered inaccessible to the more sensitive ladies about the forums, but to the credit of the AGS population at large, I can't seem to recall any specifically misogynistic behavior from anyone in particular.
I have no intent to hijack this thread, but Girls of AGS - do you consider the general feel of AGS to be as androcentric as you find in a lot of the rest of the gaming world?
My impression is a bit different, SPC. To me it seems like almost any time a female poster speaks up (or at least often when specific reference is made to a poster being a woman), there's some kind of comment along the "marry me!" --> "tits or gtfo!" scale. Sure, it's more "immature ribbing" than conscious misogyny (and it's something I may have been guilty of myself on one or two occasions), but I can totally see why it would put a lot of women off.
Not to criticize one particular example, but take the AGS Awards this year, with a random softcore photo of two girls in their underwear kissing as the "highlight" of the event. Funny, and a hit with most of the audience, sure, but wouldn't it be reasonable to think that it (and the response) could make some women who might attend or watch the event uncomfortable?
I think the forums should definitely be a casual, fun environment where people don't have to watch what they say all the time (and with members ranging in age from teenagers to middle-agers, standards for what's appropriate will necessarily vary), but with the majority of posters being male it's sometimes easy to forget that this isn't a boys' club, but should be a welcoming environment where women aren't made to feel like they're on exhibition when they drop by.
There are certainly other parts of the internet that are much worse, but I don't think these forums treat women with the respect they could/should expect in the everyday real world.
Interesting and well-made point. I'll admit that my living in Japan, where the sexualization of women is relatively commonplace - bikini-clad large-breasted models adorn the front of adolescent facing comic magazines (Jump being one of the bigger examples thereof - home of Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, etc.), for example - may have skewed my perception of the level of male-domination of the forums a bit. I'll even admit to having been one of the people that enjoyed the very part of the awards that you mentioned.
That makes me even more interested in the answer to my question.
I think Snarky placed it great. I'm definitely guilty of acting like this is a men-only club, but I'd like to think I haven't discouraged any female agser. The lesbians was just a joke to Eternally Us topic, where everyone kept posting anything but lesbians. I didn't mean to put away anyone, so next year we will feature videos. Anyhoo, I'm sorry the whole lesbian thing was just a silly farce.

I'd agree. While I've yet to see an outrageously offensive situation arise, it's certainly something that still seems part of forum life. I think the larger argument should be concerned with whether this behavior has adversely effected someone's experience with, or desire to remain part of, these forums.

Why would it? Um, the assumption that a lot of women would have no sense of humour whatsoever and won't be for some strange reason able to enjoy a lesbian joke or at least get over it and overract instead is supposed to be in favor of women?
I was in a room with a real, not a theoretical woman, during the ceremony. She wasn't exactly disturbed.

Yeah, that's not what I said. It's possible to have a sense of humor and still find stuff like this uncomfortable and inappropriate
in that context, and I didn't say anything about overreacting.
And of course, one woman does not speak for all of womankind, and just because no one has spoken up, that doesn't mean no one minded.
Anyway, let's not turn this into an argument about the AGS Awards (which I thought were brilliant overall). I wasn't pointing to it as some particularly terrible outrage against the fairer sex, just as an example of how the this community remains pretty laddish in style.
The only way to handle this issue is for the following things to happen:
1. More females get involved in the gaming industry.
2. More male gamers get girlfriends. They wouldn't make so many misogynistic posts if they had more interactions with females.
QuoteThey wouldn't make so many misogynistic posts if they had more interactions with females.
Most misogynists I know are around women quite regularly (and on top of, beneath, etc). Their attitude is typically
reinforced by such
encounters, though they're too hypocritical to just stop associating with them.
It's pretty ludicrous to assume a man would develop negative feelings for women for no reason and with no exposure. It's quite the opposite really, and while for some I know it's just a string of bad luck that has given them the impression that women are all shallow and manipulative emo-vampires, others seem to swear by it -- but again -- continue to associate with women and sometimes the very ones they're complaining about. It's like doing heroin and hating that you do it, but you can't stop because for a few moments you get 'something' out of it, a high, a relief, before the pain sets in.

The best way to get rid of their attitudes is for them to get to know females rather than use them for a "quick relief."
