Title: Glam Rock/Metal Suggestions
Post by: Dualnames on Tue 11/05/2010 05:52:57
I need someone to actually point me out in something I think I'm missing from this whole era.
I've listened to WASP, Def Leppard, Poison, Van Halen, KISS, Winger, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Motley Crue

Any songs I should hear or bands I should grab and listen? Based on the greatness of the bands above?
Some may say Glam is like shit, but I just can't get enough. :D

Silly topic, but nevertheless, a topic I crave answer for!

:D

But seriously, I'm fine (for the most part) with glam metal, I'd recommend you check out Skid Row. They released their first album in 1990, but it's still pretty glam, 'cos Sebastian Bach, their frontman is just soooooo fabulous, if you get my drift. :P

When I think of Glam I immediately think of T-Rex, and Sweet.  If you don't mind going back in time a bit.  Sweet are cheesy as fuck, but T-Rex are awesome.

That's because you're british and because T-Rex and Sweet have some really awesome songs. And somehow far less synthesizers, that might be due to times since they're from 60s/70s/early 80ies while bands like Bon Jovi and Van Halen mostly sound popish due to the 80ies USA culture.

Oh, and watch the movie Velvet goldmine.

I love glam rock (Bowie, Bolan, Reed etc.) but always found glam metal a bit silly to be honest. I'd suggest checking out New York Dolls though, even if it's more punk than metal they definitely kick ass.

Edit: And since anian mentioned Velvet Goldmine (lovely movie, watched it again just a few days ago - there's definitely a lot of stuff I missed on the first viewing because I wasn't familiar with the history of glam when it came out), I must recommend Detroit Rock City. Fun film in its own right, but also a great source for discovering cool 70's music.

Ah, I'm a huge fan of many of those guys. I love Glam Rock, Bowie, is one of my favorite artist (regardless of the era he was influenced by), New York Dolls were never my cup of tea, and same goes for T-Rex. Sweet are however a huge band I'm in love with (a couple of blog posts contain either a phrase from their songs or are paraphrased titles. I've seen the Detroit Rock City film and indeed a great one.

EDIT: SkidRow (melodyless as hell, only liked 18 and life, though Sebastian Bach has a nice voice)
EDIT2: Damn Yankees - Coming of Age, is a nice song to be heard once or 10times.

Kix might be something you'd like. The album "Blow my fuse" from 88 is a good one I think. King Kobra is another one of those bands...They only made one song I really liked though. It's called Hunger.

Hanoi Rocks!!!

According to Axl Rose, without Hanoi Rocks, there'd be no Guns'n'Roses :P

Ratt can be considered glam metal I guess.

Check out Twister Sister!

Also, I would highly recommend Alice Cooper's glam metal era: from 1986 - the album Constrictor - to 1991 - the album Hey Stoopid.

Ratt, Skid Row, Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Poison, WASP, Odin, London, Old Pantera was glam, Faster Pussycat, and some others I'm forgetting...

I'm not into glam metal myself. I just know these bands from extended research. I'm more of a thrash metal guy myself.
