I think there have been roughly the same amount of unofficial Discworld 'companion' books published as there are that were co-written by Terry Pratchett himself. I dunno if the argument of "it will harm sales of the official version" is valid at all, but it doesn't seem to be seen as much of an issue in Pratchett's camp.

Also, I'm pretty sure J.K. Rowling has made more cash from her seven books than Pratchett has from his fifty-odd.
I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

I'm tired of pretending I'm not bitchin', a total frickin' rock star from Mars.

I don't know about Rowling, but I'll tell you - if any sad little mothertrucker copies any portion of Infamous' Adventures Highly Original and Copywrited work of King's Quest III, I will come through the computer screen to deliver them a beatdown so severe that their potentially unborn CHILDREN will feel it!  FEAR MY WRATH.

It's her stuff.  I can see the need to protect it.  I also see that if she played her cards right, she could make more money off of the librarian's Harry Potter Lexicon.  Everyone could win.
