The Sierra Network

I heard some people were trying recreate The Sierra Network, (or INN - depending on when you discover the online game).

I was wondering, does anyone know more about this?  Also, was anyone else part of the $5 per minute software program?  I remember going on whenever I could, and it was always so quiet.  I found it hard to get people to play cards.  Occasionally, I'd meet a Sierra employee, (I guess they were the only ones who could spend any time on it).

Here's me representing if you have NO idea what I'm talking about.  It was an overpriced online game where you could play games, (mostly lame), & talk to people, (mostly ones you'd wish you hadn't).

LGM

I remember playing the demo for it on my old Sierra game CDs when I was little. I really had no idea what it was.. But yes, I do remember it.

Mr Jake

I remember something similair, not that tho.

Vel

I guess I have that on some cd, but I dont suppose it's worth 'playing'.

I tried the Sierra Network back in 1994 under a trial period.  I thought it was kind of cool and logged on occasionally, but it really didn't have much to do.  I remember playing some sort of RPG with a bunch of people, but they left me behind.  :(

I also had some girl get mad at me for no reason and was swearing at me.  Now when i look back at it, it was kind of funny.

But it would be interesting to see what could be done with it today, and maybe if there were more people online.  But i probably wouldn't use it and would just stick with the AGS forums.

I'm guessing that it was also made with the SCI engine... did sierra ever write stuff in anything but SCI? :P

AGA

...did LucasArts ever write anything in anything but SCUMM?

NetMonkey -> Yes. Before SCI there was AGI, and before AGI there was LOADER/MAIN. Also, SCI isn't quite the same as SCIV. But yes, the KQ trivia collection is SCIV, as is Jones in the Fast Lane. I'm sure their later games (KQ7 or MOE) are something different.

AGA -> No, even X-wing vs. Tie Fighter is SCUMM :)

You should check out http://goodoldadventures.com/index.html. I don't know if its really very active anymore but its like a chat room where you are old AGI sierra characters and you can explore the old games. It's not made by sierra btw.

Babar

I still have that program on one of my Sierra CDs. Never figured out what it was until now, though.

Back then , I kept meaning to get involved with it but never did and then of course after things fell apart I despaired over not having ever gotten the chance to experience it. But if it was really that awful , maybe I should be glad that that happened...

All things being equal - Most companies at the time, (prodigy, Compuserve, AOL,) were charging about $4.95 per hour to use, basically, a BBS with pictures.

TSN wasn't much more overpriced than the rest of them.

Tanker: It's not exactly dead- it's just that it really hasn't caught on. People go on, realize there's no one there, and then leave. So there's even more no one there.

Well the funny thing is is that it still gets about 60 hits a day (http://www.nedstatbasic.net/s?tab=1&link=1&id=2106137), so I guess its not heaps dead, and on the forum the developer guy mentioned he was working on GOA2, but that was a while ago, although it sounded very promising.
