Google Chrome freezing on animated GIFs?

I've recently found that if an animated GIF is loaded and I go do something in another tab, the tab with the animated GIF freezes when I return to it. I have noticed this repeatedly because my avatar has a random chance of being an animated GIF and not a static PNG.

The exact circumstances in which I have been able to replicate this:

- Load a page with an animated GIF (e.g., refresh this page until my avatar catches on fire)
- Open another tab, and browse the web on it for at least 2-3 minutes, loading new pages, images, etc.
- Switch back to the original tab

Is anyone else able to replicate this? It's rather frustrating... I tried searching for information on it, but just found a bug listing from 5 years ago, and people talking about various other (unrelated) issues Chrome has with animated GIFs. Maybe it's time I finally sort out how to adopt the aPNG format and abandon animated GIFs altogether.

Eric

Mine actually hung only with your avatar, the one with the flames.

selmiak

it works in firefox :D
and aPNGs rock, look at my sig (mastermind), looked really crappy as GIF, but aPNGs get really huge in filesize very quick.

Ghost

Chrome is clearly trying to figure out how to pronounce GIF.

Yes, monkey_05_06, today my Google Chrome just hanged completely when you posted in that religion/whatnot thread with a new Gif on your avatar. :(

I don't understand why Chrome should suddenly be freezing when loading my avatar. Nothing about the animated GIF rendering has changed...although there were a couple of other changes that I wouldn't think should have been related, I'll try and do some testing when I can.

However, I'm experiencing similar results with other animated GIFs, not just my avatar. :-\ Guess I'll just have to go back to using Internet Explorer.

(lol, no)
