Mine is pre-ordered and paid for..looks like it is going to be an amazing game...
Anybody else looking forward to April 29th??
Who here is going to be getting this game?
Cheers,
Domino
As a manager of a videogame shop, you will see "grand theft auto" appear on my now playing list on xbox live, BEFORE April 29th ;D (I hope hehe)
Although according to a customer in my shop, he's already played it. Take it away oh so honest customer:
"I've played GTA IV. It's rubbish. You just take over territories like in San Andreas."
When asked how he could have possibly played it, he wasn't forthcoming with his response.
"I know people"
Do these people give you medicine by any chance?
I have yet to play ANY of the GTA games. Might as well just start with the first one, I guess.

I believe 1 and 2 are free from Rockstar, or at least they were. Didn't take to them much though. I've yet to play one of the 3D ones, but I'm liking what I've heard of IV so far.
They're free yes.
I personally preferred Vice City of the 3 latter ones. IV looks a bit lifeless, kind of dull atmosphere-wise. Though who am I to judge, I know I won't be able to play it, perhaps never due to the requirements. Though graphics-wise it looks really awesome.

Maybe, just maybe he does know people? I had Guitar Hero 3 weeks before it was released here :D
So what were Vice City and San Andreas... kind of spin-off's of GTA3?... actually that would makes sense... because those are the three cities (Liberty City, too) of the first game... sorry just thinking out loud here... Stupot's not all that bright...

No, they simply changed their name to Rockstar.
I personally like the first one and Vice City. The first one is original and I have spent hours on it as a kid, hours of fun. Vice City has good atmosphere. Anytime I play it, I really feel like on Florida in 1980s. That is why I like it. But I am not much into GTA games, because they are too unrealistic to my taste. Its fun, to some extent, but it is helluva unrealistic.
Screw that rule on this forum about needing to contribute to an AGS game in order to post. I can't help it. I'll just post in topixs created by other people and not create them. Mod me or not mods, I don't care... ;D
In response to this topic, Those that do get it early, I suggest you don't log into LIVE because if you do, you might get banned for getting online with GTA:IV before the release date. Just sign out before playing.
Besides, there won't be much people playing online before release date. Stick with the single player and beat it. After all, playing the single player is the most important part of this game. Multi is like desert.
I too will be getting this game on my 360. My Gamertag is: Psychonauticus for those who want to play with me. :D
Wait, GTA 4 has online play? That's awesome! How does that work? Kind of like Saints Row?
I played GTA: San Andreas mostly. Everyone was talking about it so much I figured I should try it. And it rocked! I burned solid weeks on that game, just screwing around with friends and whatnot, trying to steal planes from the airport or taking turns seeing how long we can survive at max notoriety.
My favourite pastime was collecting up all the different pimpable cars and pimping them - Slamvan was the coolest...

Actually, I think play GTA online was already possible from GTA 3. You just had to download a patch or something to play online.
Im really looking forward to GTA 4. The grahics look really nice and lovely next gen. Even if it will be alot like SA I will enjoy it. Just because GTA games always have fun to follow stories and missions.

But there is one thing Im slightly peeved about and that is They removed PLANES there is still choppers but no planes. They took them out because its NYC and they were afraid of offending people due to 9/11. If that isnt the biggest load of bollocks Ive ever heard I dont know what is!
^ I copied this from some guy on a forum.... I was to lazy to explain the online portion. :P

Pfffffft. I agree with whoever you copied that from. That is just stupid...
Besides, since when does
Rockstar worry about offending people? You can butcher prostitutes and steal their sex money, but you can't fly a plane because someone might be upset?
Actually, they got rid of the planes because they thought it was too unrealistic that some dude could just jump into a commercial plane and fly it.
Rockstar would hardly be the type to back away from something taboo.

The reason there are no planes is because it's all located in one city - not a huge state area like SA - so flying planes around would be silly.
Anyhoo, I'm not too excited for this. I will play it (as my flatmate has a PS3!) but I don't see how they can revolutionise the gameplay that much. It will probably just be "more of the same" only with fancier schmancier graphics as far as I can tell? Unless it is something truly cinematic and special, I can't see myself being too excited about it.
I like all the other 3D GTAs, but towards the end I was getting a little bored of the format. Large free roaming environments aren't that big news anymore.
I'm terribly upset that there's no PC version. I've played all previous ones and now... this.
I love how GTA IV takes its inspiration from Russian thrillers, such as Bumer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381936/) and Brat (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118767/) movies/sequels. In one of the videos on GTA IV page, there was even music from one of the films (http://www.rockstargames.com/IV/#?page=glebov&content=video0) remixed and used...
I would love to play this. Where's PC version?!

Not when I tell you on that same day he told me he sold a UK version of Final Fantasy Crisis Core for psp (thats not out yet) for £100 at a trade shop called Cex.
I can't see them banning people for playing a game that's not released yet. Some shops do sell games to consumers a day or two before it's actual release date, and the suppliers and publishers don't like that. To punish the consumers who could have innocently gone into a shop, seen the game and bought it thinking it's come out early would be wrong.

It will probably be releashed some time after the console version. Just like it was with GTA:SA. It upsets me that everything is so console based these days. :-\
I just have one thing to say...
YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH! LOCK AND LOOOAAAD!!!
Preordered and paid for... :)
I'm all GTA'd out. I've lost interest, honestly. I don't want to live out the story of an East-European thug's rise to criminal power. I've already lived such a life as an American, two Italian-Americans, and a couple of African-Americans, and I'm bored.
I'm not casting aspersions on the quality of the game, I just don't want to play it.
I'm bored of Rockstar.
I wasn't excited about GTA IV for a long time, as I didn't want to allow myself to get that way about a game, and then have to wait ages for it. However.. having customers ask me when the game is out in my shop every ten minutes, recently, makes it hard to forget about it!
Cust: "When is Grand theft-"
Matt:" 29th April."
Cust: "What-"
Matt: "Tuesday."
Oh okay, I have to let them finish their sentences, as it's only polite!

So were they, so it's not about 'rags to riches', but about 'rags to slightly less rags.' :P
Also, I'm so f*cking hyped for this game right now. 13 days is a long time.

Something tells me that the "most anticipated game ever" will be a bitch to find even a month after the release date... I should've pre-ordered...
When you say '16-player free-roaming', does that mean 16 people just faffing about, driving around and shooting stuff, or does it mean the full gambit - shopping, pimping cars, doing missions, robbing houses, etc.?

There are plenty of modes which look awesome! Check out the "cops n' crooks" mode! :D There is a regular TDM or DM mode as well though. AFAIK, it's raffing about, but with the whole city as their playground!
GTA 4 has gone gold!!! It will be here soon.
Cannot wait. Sucks that it comes out during the busiest time of year at work.
Will not get much time to play it. :'(
Pre-ordered it at various stores, just in case. They seem to be expecting a shortage of the game, at least in Holland. I love the game series. Every game just got better and better. Also looking forward to the multiplayer modes, and the DLC on Xbox 360!
I'm guarenteed a special edition on release date :)
The online free roam has the entire city to play with, exactly as it is in the single player. The whole city is open at the start of the game and its the same case in multiplayer, all cars, boats and helicopters are there as well as every other little detail from the sp. Just the mission spawns are gone.
I don't normally get worked up about a release date, but there is SO much work gone into gta it's like the 90's again!
GTA IV smashes all kinds of records!!! (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20080507/ttc-lifestyle-videogames-us-it-company-r-e0bba4a.html)
You'll have to modify the url slightly because it contains the letter 'r' which those eggheads at bigbluecup have cunningly edited to are because they think i'm an idiot who can't spell.
I am having a great time with this. Easily one of the best games i have played next to Bioshock.
I loved GTA3, VC and SA, but this one is amazing IMO.
It sucks that you can't ride the rides in the amusement park though. :)
Bowling & Darts are fun too.

I have played it from the release day and I have some conclussions (Comparision between GTA IV and GTA:SA):
Bellic is not so carismatic as CJ. (As Carl Johnson, I mean, but hehe... Chris Jones is more carismatic than Bellic as well...)
Missions are easier. (Maybe because I had to aim with the mouse in GTA:SA and with GTAVI I aim "automatically", since I am playing with a PS3 sixaxis?
Missions in GTA IV hasve less variety: In SA there was which was about aiming polices where Catalina was robbing a bank, if you let the polices reach to his weapons with their hands, they would shoot at you and make the alarm. You had to steal something to the army, drive trucks, get into an Hercules aircraft with a motorcycle and make it explode, get into a carrier and steal a fighter, make more races, sneak into houses and steal things... Dunno, I have the sense that 90% in GTA IV are "drive and shoot to people".
GTAIV has less "silly things that make you feel this is a videogame and not the real life". The "hidden objects" are pigeons with a discreet orange blow, not horseshoes or shells floating in th air, for example.
Radio stations were far better in GTA:SA, IMHO.
GTA IV map is smaller, but has more volume of things happening... Not sure if this is good or not, since I loved to go to the desert of San Andreas, put my leather jacket on, and ride my Harley with a country station on...
Anyway, I am discovering that GTA IV is not that great as the media says... except for the city. It' s just the possibility of walking in NY and the feeling that it is alive (without danger of getting your wallet stolen) that makes it great for me.
They certainly cut some corners with the size of the map and the number of "fun things' like the eat to get fat and DDR type stuff. But this is all good since they focused on realism. The Euphoria physics are amazing!
I think I admitted long ago I got caught up in San Andrea Multiplayer. I actually have a test server where I've been coding. This is where I have been for so long. *sigh* Addictions.
Not that I was about to acquire GTA IV any time soon (you need xbox 360 or playstation 3 first, right?) but I'm kind of disappointed to hear that it involves less of the quirky details that made San Andreas kind of fun, even for a non-hardcore gamer as myself.
It does have a few less of those quirky things, but it has an amazingly engaging storyline, with a really rich character. If they'd kept in a lot of the quirky stuff I think it may have held it back somewhat.
I don' t want to focus the discussion on the quirky things... I preffer the game without them.
But missions are easier and more repetive, IMHO.
Of course, Liberty city is SUPERB! But San Andreas was as great (About atmosphere and detail, I am not taking of th emap size) as Liberty City (Considering the TECHNOLOGY they had in the time when both games were released).
I feel teleported when I a play in LC, I feel that nothing better could be done to represent a real city in a game made in 2008... but I felt the same when I was playing in LS, SF and LV in 2004.
I enjoyed inmenselly the change of directions that took in SA, the badlands, the desert, Las Venturas... I really liked Mike Toreno' s missions. I felt that there was a logical evolution between the guy making an easy drive through in mission 1 to the Jamesbondish guy we had at the latest.
Mike is allways the same. It is just that the missions are longer, and there are more enemies, but mission 5 is vistually identical to mission 25.
Dunno... I have the same feeling that I have when I compare an action movie made in 1981 (Raiders of the Lost Ark) with one made in 2007 (Spiderman 3, for example). The newers are tecnology better? Yes. Do I preffer the new ones? Definitelly not.
And I am not saying I am not liking GTA IV. I really like it...
It is just that I feel that "it' s not that much" as the media says. I mean... 100% in IGN, 100% in meristation, 5/5 in Play Station magazine, etc... IMHO, too much. 8.5 of 10 would have been enough.
EDIT: To explain it better... GTA: SA was a Vin Disel movie, and GTA IV is more like Coppola. I' d preffer the second option if I had to go to the cinema, but I am not sure about a videogame I had to play.
One German shop stated that PC version will be out in Nov the 23. But I doubt it. PS3 is still quite new and they don't want to lose their market for the PC yet.
As for me, I think its time to take up GTA III again.
Finally got this game. Personally, I think it's a bit of a step down from San Andreas in most regards, except perhaps in the atmosphere.
The thing that really pissed me off though was that they got authentic Eastern European actors, Russian actors, Jamaican actors, African American actors, Italian American actors, American American actors -- they even got Ricky Gervais -- but they couldn't get a single focking Irish guy! All they had were these New Yorker guys who threw in the occasional perversion of Irish slang, and made vague references to the Troubles. I mean, WTF?
This is almost as bad as when Atlas turned out to not even exist. Why are Irish characters always disappointing?
Thought "In Bruges" was pretty good. It was nice to see Colin Ferell ( who I typically hate) in a role I enjoyed. I could name some really great performances. Take Gary Oldman and Ed Harris in "State of Grace." Thought they did a phenomenal job as Irish american mobsters.
But to your point I think its a matter of perspective. Sure. GTA4 got some good voice acting for eastern europeans. But this is not always so. Almost every ethnicity has played victim to this annoyance. The stereotypical Russian or Italian or Mexian or Indian guy in movies is so overdone (and it stings when its an out of place actor). With all these horrible portrayals I couldn't single out the Irish... but I'm sure you could since movies like Boon Dock Saints probably take the piss when you watch them.
But if I were to place my finger on it, I would blame all the American actors of Irish descent who get jobs because they have red hair. Specifically... blame douche bags like Michael Rapaport. These shitty actors practice their Irish accents for two weeks and put "authentic Irish accent" on their resumes.
As an actor myself I'd peg the "irish accent" as the actor's laziest best friend. No effort, no research. Just "gimme me lucky charms!" and you're in. So yeah I'd say most hack actors in Hollywood are to blame, not Hollywood itself.
Maybe so, but there's nothing more irritating to an Irishman than people who pretend to be Irish.
We're a very proud people, as many Europeans are. We're all self-conscious about globalisation and becoming 'Little America', and we love the stereotypical view that we're silver-tongued, party-loving devils who can hold our liquor and are always up for a laugh. It's a sense of national pride that's so palpable even companies like 'Carlsberg' pick up on it.
And when Americans start calling themselves Irish because their "great great great grandma took a piss in Dublin on the way over from Leeds" it's like they're stealing our personal identity because they think it's cooler than being just a 'normal' American.
So it's incredibly annoying when this American gobshite is there shouting "Crickey, boyos! I haven't seen this much combat since Belfast!"
I mean, if they were actually taking the piss, it'd be grand, but the fact that they're actually trying -- and helping the Irish mob takes up about a third of the story missions, more than any other ethnicity -- without a single bit of research into what Irish people are actually like, is just retarded... (not to mention that they seemed to get almost every other ethnicity right, without portraying them solely as a pack of dysfunctional drug addicts)
I just finished it... The last mission is a bit "Vin Disel", again, which makes me feel weird, since all the action has been "mildly realistic", like in "The Score" movie, or something like that... Well... I prefered GTA:SA as a game, but Liberty City is ultra cool.
Emerald, sure they were portrayed as a bunch of drug taking degenerates, but well.... they are a criminal family, with Irish heritage. They've lived in America for a long time, and only the oldest one, who I guess still feels for his homeland, is the one involved in IRA activities and mentions anything about seeing action back there. Packie is practically a fully fledged American, and a low level thug, and much like low level thugs dealing in drugs, he himself has a problem. In real life you'd have to go very high up the food chain to find someone who isn't using. Sure they use some cliches, but they aren't ramming them down our throats. They use them to sort of layer the character and give them their personalities.
Did you expect Irish characters who had lived in this New York like environment since they were children to grow up with amazingly strong accents? Sure they'd have some occasional odd inflections and bastardization of terms, but it's because they were more American than Irish.
Also I thought this game was a step up from San Andreas. I thought it was a major step up. CJ was a character I felt no sympathy for. His mother is dead, so he returns to SA. Fair enough, and he sticks around a while. Suddenly he becomes involved in these criminal activities. Why? What possible reason does he have? He doesn't have a real connection to the streets. If he did, he wouldn't have left in the first place. He wants a better life, so he proceeds to throw himself in the opposite direction.
Vice City, you were a criminal through and through. Tommy was 100% criminal and psychotic. He did what he did because he wanted money, and he wanted power, it was what drove his entire existence. Unsympathetic, but at least he had a true reason for what he was doing.
Then with GTA4 we have a character who is trying to escape this world, and he continually tries to escape only to have it once more thrust upon him, leaving him with no options. A truly sympathetic character that lead to one of the most enthralling stories of any game I've played. Sure all those custom options were changed. They fit with SA, but they wouldnt have with this game. Pimping a car in Liberty City would have been ridiculous. Or giving Niko some crazy new haircut and bling. The guy buys clothes, just like regular people. He is (more so than other characters) just a regular guy fighting against insurmountable odds. That's why I think this game really surpassed the others. The incredible story line, the rich characters and an overall enjoyable game. Never was there missions that frustrated me beyond belief, leaving me to give up the game awhile so as not to crush my controller with pure fury. Many of such type were in SA.
Anyway
End rant.
^^^ That's exactly what I didn't like. I'm all for realism in games, but Grand Theft Auto is one game that is supposed to be as
fun as possible, not as
realistic as possible.
Niko is a one-man-army who never dies no matter how many times he blows up, and is completely forgotten about the minute he leaves the cop's sight, no matter how many thousands of innocent citizens he kills. Speaking of which, his personality is completely inconsistent -- one minute he's massacring a warehouse full of men for no reason other than some guy he met for the first time told him to (shouting "I'LL RIP YOUR FUCKING HEART OUT!" as he does) for a couple hundred bucks, the next minute he's comforting some girl he just met as she cries on his shoulder.
Spoiler
The missions themselves are ridiculous: "Hey, let's like, rob the city's main bank without any sort of getaway plan or exit route"
"Look, I don't trust you enough for you to go on a real mission, so instead I want you to take this sniper rifle and cover me while I stand around like a suicidial idiot...", etc.
GTA is not, and will never be 'realistic'. The only difference is, GTA4 is
slightly more realistic than SA, but not by much. The only major improvment would be Niko over CJ. The things I miss are:
- Proper Car Storage (like the system from Saints Row, where you don't have to drive back to your storage every single time)
- Car modification (out of place or not, it's just not as fun without it)
- Cooler weapons (what happened to the flame thrower, minigun, katana, C4, etc. -- not to mention dual-wielding shotguns)
- Haircuts/tattoos/jewelry (it just made things less interesting for me. I mean, why even list 'shops' as a separate category if all you can buy is clothes?)
- Stats (I personally liked the stats, and how your character evolves depending on your play-style -- you over-eat, and you get fat. That was awesome. It sucks that Niko is permanently pot-bellied)
- Parachutes/sky-diving
- Gang wars/Territories (I was disappointed you couldn't say, earn territory for the McReary's from the mafia)
- Vehicle-based missions (pimping, fire-fighting, paramedic, etc.)
- Rewards for missions (50% more armour, immunity to fire, 50% more health, all taxis had nitro -- that was cool)
- Tanks, bicycles, hovercrafts (I don't even understand why they weren't included)
- More interesting characters (everyone in GTA4 seems to be the same -- either a low-life drug addict who you 'help out', or a big-time imperialist Toreno-clone. What happened to Woozie and Big Smoke and The Truth and classic characters like that?)
- More interesting/varied missions (it seems like every single mission in GTA4 was either a car chase or a shoot-out. Or both.)
Sacrificing those things for a story that really wasn't that much better than San Andreas seems wrong. This, to me, was the first GTA which was
less fun than the previous one -- they actually removed good stuff rather than added stuff in...
Who said Grand Theft Auto is supposed to be as fun as possible and not as realistic as possible? I don't remember Rockstar saying that. I doubt you'd find it in their design brief. If it was to be as fun as possible, why not have a game where giant animals run through the city and you can blow them for a million dollars each? That'd be fun. But it wouldn't mesh with the story would it? Unless we're in some freakish Bizarro realm.
I don't think Rockstar were going for an ultra realistic approach, I think they were just trying to create a truly new experience for fans of the series and games in general. I think they achieved that. And yes, Niko kills a whole lot of people for some money then consoles a crying girl. That doesn't give take away, that adds to his character. He's a trained soldier, who was once involved and a horrendous war. Taking out a few guys in a warehouse is not that big a deal for him. And when doing so, he does it because he wants Roman and himself to be free of this man's tyranny, and wants a better life, if that involves doing some criminal things, than that's ok in the big picture of freedom.
And yeah, he shouts at people. He's in a combat zone, what do you expect him to do? He has to hate his enemy, and he has to scare them. His shouting is an effective method of psyching himself up, and psyching the enemy out. That just means he's a trained soldier, who will get the job done, for the greater good, just like every soldier in the world believes they are doing. Does this make them incapable of feeling empathy?
Also, how else do you expect him to prove himself? The person you protect is a low level thug? Would the character giving you the mission care if that person died? Not really. I think it was fair enough as a means to proving yourself.
As for characters in the game, yes there are low life criminals with drug problems. What else would you expect? Niko walks off the ship, and the Russians show him a good time of Christianity and abstinence? Niko starts at the bottom level and slowly, very slowly works his way up to meeting new people. But he himself is still a bottom level criminal doing the ground work for those above him. All the characters he meets in the game are very true to their environment, it gives the game a real feeling of a living breathing city, instead of some cut out set for ridiculous characters dance about in front of.
Gang wars would be impossible considering the setting of the game. With a city devoted to safety like it is, due to the war on terror, and the large police presence, having a gang war would end in seconds. You'd shoot three guys, and get killed by the ten cops that swarm in and save the world.
And a lot of the other things mentioned. In this game they would have seemed out of place. They wouldn't have meshed with the story and would have come across as juvenile, in an overall more adult experience. Note that I didn't say realistic. I don't think it comes close to real life, but it is an overall more adult tone. Having those functions would in essence be giving a pacifier to a 42 year old.
I'll make this post for a little "lack of paragraph relief" on the eyes.
Well GTA4 aside, I was mostly interested in talking about ethnic stereotypes in movies. Marlon Brando was a big proponent of Native Americans & defending those peoples from the Hollywood indian.
If I make a new topic on stereotypes it might get stale quick though, seeing as not many people jumped in on this one.
I agree with Cameron that Rockstar hasn' t said that their goal is to make the games as funnier as possible.
When did they say their goal is to make the games as realistic as possible?
I shot a pigeon and right away had the cops on my ass...that was BS!!
I was on Happiness Island when i saw the pigeon...well the game calls them Flying Rats, which are the same as Hidden Packages in the other GTA's.
Shooting a firearm in a metropolis full of people SHOULDN'T get the cops attention?
That is what makes the game fun..you have to pay for your actions, even shooting a stupid bird. :)

Sorry for double posting and bumping this thread...but i can't believe that this made it through testing without being found. A spelling mistake.
Could be intentional, don't know.
In GTA: SA they spelled Martial Arts as Marital Arts which was a mistake also.
Right now trying to beat a mission that i keep failing.
edit: just beat the mission. :)
Probably a typo. However there are even more misspellings in the real world.
I remember talking to the owner of a Chinese/Vietnamese Restaurant called Hoa Hoa. The owner told me that it's really supposed to be "Hao Hao" but after it was misspelled they just went with the flow.
