Title: Graphical Text Based Program
Post by: remminycricket on Thu 08/03/2007 02:27:21
Ok, I do not want to write out some long explanation, when I can easily keep it short and sweet.

Does anyone know of any free game creating programs to create a graphical text adventure?
Ã,  They were primarily big in the 80's.

Ive decided on SUDS but i was wondering if everyone else felt that it was a SAFE choice, because i have had a lot of bad expiriences in the past with viruses.

Try this page, it's how I found AGS. Lots and lots of graphical, 3d, text etc adventure engines are listed and it's still regularly updated!

Well, I wouldn't say "regularly" updated. Last update was august 4, 2005. I was surprised when I clicked on the link and saw that he'd finally updated it. I'm gonna have to check out the new additions.

You can actually make a graphical text adventure that uses point - n - click, like Shadowkeep or Deja Vu or Uninvited, in AGS. Some of the interactive fiction engines, like Quest and TADS have graphic and music support, too. I would suggest Quest, but it's shareware, so you eventually have to pay for it.

Also, check out HUGO:

It's the system that was used to make the game Future Boy! which was pretty great.  I was considering having a go at it myself.

My personal favorite was World Builder, But unfortunately it's only for the Macintosh.

Winquill may also be usefull.

It's possible to make IF in AGS. No, really.

But if you don't, I suggest either SUDS, http://www.btinternet.com/~sudslore/, or ADRIFT. Shame that ADRIFT isn't free...

If you still happen to be looking for graphical text adventure programs:

Try out Adventure Game Toolkit: Masters Edition

I used to use this. It's great and easy to use.

Heh, I thought you might. BTW, here's the pros and cons:

+ Amazingly powerful and versatile
+ Very easy to use
- You're limited to those verbs it offers you
- The screen can get a bit of an eyesore after you've played for a long time.

You should be aware of the latter two. Also, players will need the engine to play the game, but you'll manage to find out how to distribute the game as an EXE.
