Title: Grim Fandango movie
Post by: R4L on Fri 14/07/2006 08:37:47
Supposedly, Tim Burton is making a movie based on this game. Now I have never played GF, because I wasn't really too old when it was around, but im willing to bet the movie will be bad. Tim Burton massacred Willy Wonka, so what will he do this time?

Burton has never massacred anything for me, but that's a different topic.

This could turn out very interesting. Here is a link: http://themoviecenter.wordpress.com/2006/07/07/dia-de-los-muertos/

I actually think he could do a great job making a film out of Grim Fandango. I'm not counting on it being 100% accurate to the game, but I'm interested in what he makes of it. (if it IS just like the game, then why bother seeing it?)

While a Tim Burton Grim Fandango would be awesome, I'm pretty sure the Adventure Gamers Forum members have completely debunked this "announcement" as nothing but bollocks.

While Tim Burton isn't exactly my director of choice in selecting a movie to watch, Burton is fantastic at getting dark, grimy settings but still making it comedic. Therefore, i am confident Burton will nail the dark setting needed. The character development, script, and dialog, well...let's just keep our fingers crossed.
Cheers,
Fluke.

I'm fond of Burton, so I'd be happy if this happens, especially after returning Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to what it should be after that earlier turd of a film.

I also expect Blackthorne to chime in with how much he adores Burton.

--edit--
Also, the Department of Death is a tad similar to the bureaucracy in Beetlejuice.

To me it seems Burton would be the best person for this job, but for now it's just a rumor. I don't particularly mind either way, GF doesn't particularly need a movie made out of it, but it'll be nice for people that wouldn't otherwise know about the game.

I remember hearing that Tim Schafer was inspired by Tim Burton's little skeleton dolls in the first place, so if anyone should make a movie...

IF a movie is being made of course. And if it is, I don't care who makes it, as long as Manny's original voice actor returns. The sound was my favourite part of this game, and I don't know if I could accept new actors.

I don't like the idea, not because of Tim Burton, but because never has never any good movie based on a computer game\videpo game. NEVER.
However if it must be made, Tim Burton would be the right man for the job, since the style of some of his more famous movies fits the style of the game.

Oh I don't know, I found Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade a rather nice movie :)

Seriously though, they say that Pirates of the Caribbean was based in part upon TSOMI...

For me this would be great news, Tim is the man. And I'd like to see a peeled Bruce Willis performing Manny as well...  :D

That's true. DOOM kinda sucked, and Mortal Kombat which, granted, wasn't too bad.
Meh. :-\

The Doom movie sucked because it was like watching someone else play while you're waiting for your turn.

Tim Burton made one movie which I watch still, and thats Nightmare Before Christmas.

But I do agree with Nostradamus and Fluke, game-to-movie transitions are usually pretty crappy. I admire Tim for actually taking up this project. Im hoping he does well with it, hell, I am going to see it anyway. But it sucks when you haven't played the game because I am one of the few who hasn't, so I'm not sure how to judge the movie if I see it. Personally, I want to see Metroid. John Woo is my hero  :=.

Well, a Grim Fandango movie, huh?
Sounds very interesting, let's see what it will be like.

What Metroid fan doesn't? John Woo is just directing the movie, but yeah he is really cool. Rent Hard Boiled some time.

Farl: Can I have you with extra cheese on top? :p

Anyways... I do believe that Tim is one of th efew people who would be able to pull this off. Some of you may not like him or Charlie but the fact still remains that his style is good for Grim Fandango. Could you imagine maybe Spielberg trying the same thing. I would surely get sick many times, and someone would have to really forece me in order to see a moive like Grim directed by Steven. Not that he is a bad director (he is kinda but heck his movies are fun to watch most ofthe times, especially the older ones), but still he is NOT the right person to make Grim into  movie.

Doom would never work, as there is no scenario really, apart from kill kill kill, while Tomb Raiden is almost the same, but there is a story behind it and there is a female character as well ;D

God, Spielburg's Grim Fandango. Now that would cause intense internal bleeding.

"IN A WORLD FAR AWAY, A CORRUPT ORGANISATION RUNS THE SHOW, AND ONLY ONE MAN CAN STOP THEM. A HERO WILL RISE, AND AN EMPIRE WILL FALL..."

It makes my brain itch just thinking about it.

Lol. We should start a thread on derivations of a (book/computer game/movie) that have a relationship to their original that is barely visibile or even entirely nonexistent.

For instance,
* EarthSea the movie (bears no resemblance to the book)
* Dungeons & Dragons the movie (not really the setting and certainly not the gameplay)
* Several of the earlier Magic: the Gathering novels (basically random fantasy novels)
* Lord of the Rings board game (way too abstract, you just collect symbols)
* Lord of the Rings non-collectible card game (simple game with photos tacked on)
* An earlier James Bond computer game that is basically a flightsim.
* E.T. the computer game (need I really explain this one?)

Radiant, Last Crusade WAS NOT a movie based on a game. They both went out in 1989, the game went out to ride on the success of the film, just like is done till this very day.
The first ever Indiana Jones product on any media was the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981.

As for POTC, it is based completely on the Pirates of the Carribean ride on disneyland. Notice that it is a disney film. As someone who has been on that ride years before the movie, I could spot most if not all references to the ride.
There isn't really any reference to any Monkey Island game in the movie.

After watching Dead Man's Chest, I'm not sure you can argue there weren't ANY Monkey Island influences. Less than some people like to think, maybe, but they certainly were there...

As for the original topic, as has been stated, it's not going to happen.

I am probably the only person around here who has never played all of Grim Fandango. I played the demo, and that's all. The demo didn't last very long but i like it. Is it still possible to buy this game. No ebay, i cancelled my account a couple of months ago.

Yeh, I read BT's link and there's just as much proof that the rumour is real as there is it's made up. There's nothing conclusive yet so I'm going to remain my excited and hopeful self.

I'm just being optimistic. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if Burton had talked about it briefly behind closed doors.

Hells yes. I saw it in GAME last Christmas, I even bought a copy for one of my adventurally challenged friends. Just poke about a bit in the PC sections of game shops, I almost guarantee that you'll find a copy of Grim Fandango.
(On that day and subsequent others, I also saw The Dig and Full Throttle, so presumably you can still pick up these in the highstreet as well)
