Title: Guess what I got for my BIRTHDAY?!
Post by: Meowster on Thu 13/05/2004 18:37:58
A DIGITAL CAMERA!!!!

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, "But why?"

Because I love cameras! I love taking pictures! I always have! Although I haven't had a camera to take pictures WITH, because I wasn't interested in cameras and never took pictures. Then I took photograph classes and I hated photograph and kept telling my mom about how crap photography was. Then, when I got back from the tour, my mom asked why I had so few photos and I said, "I hate photos."

But secretly, underneath it all, I obviously love cameras, and my mother knew this, and knew it was a relevant present for me that I'd use for the rest of my life. How she knew? I do not know.

But best of all, this camera is nearly the same price as a small wacom, and they sit next to each other, side by side, like brothers, on the shelf of PC WORLD. Although I have wanted a wacom since the beginning of Wacom Time, I guess my mother knew that I would prefer, and get more use out of a camera. And I was going to be so much more delighted when I found out that it was a camera, and not a wacom, that she dropped hints that it was a wacom. Like, "It's pen shaped!" and "It's going to help your artistic ability!" and "You're not even going to want to go in to school when you get it, so I'll give it to you in the evening." And then, later on, "It's triangular!" which was a lie.

Thank you, mom. Thank you for this wonderful, horribly expensive, yet incredibly thoughtful present. You keep coming in to the room to see if I'm using it yet. Remember when I first saw it, and my grin sort of froze on my face in delight? I turned it on to see if a pen fell out, or whether it unfolded into a flat, wacom like surface? And when the memory card fell onto the floor, I picked it up and scratched it on the camera to see if it was some sort of disguised pen? After that, I pressed the record button by mistake, and it wouldn't stop recording, so I put it away and left it on the far end of the table, and quietly started my concept art for Luna using a pencil and some paper. I'm not sure if I want to record anything because I already have a webcam to do that with, except the webcam also has a microphone. And we already have hordes of cameras lying about the house not being used because I don't like cameras. But I'm going to go outside in the rain and find something to take a photograph of, later, when it stops raining. If it stops raining. Maybe I'll take some pictures of a wacom! That's the best part about a camera instead of a wacom. With a wacom, you only own a wacom. but with a CAMERA, you can own a camera AND PICTURES of a wacom!

Thanks again. This horribly, horribly expensive present is the best present ever, and I don't know how I can word my delight because it's horribly expensive.

I have to go now, because I have to draw concept art. I was putting off the concept art until my birthday because I was going to use my new wacom to draw it. But you got this, instead! And I am delighted. So delighted. And I am delighted for YOU, because it was not a waste of your money.

However, I think people should stop buying 'surprise' birthday gifts and start fucking consulting the people they're buying them for. Just in case they one day don't get the right present, but they spend lots of money on it anyway, and the person getting the present has no use for it whatsoever but they have to pretend to like it because it's horribly expensive and they might seem ungrateful. All it would take is a simple question to save this awkward predicament.

I hate surprises.

Did she keep the receipt?
Title: Re: Guess what I got for my BIRTHDAY?!

She didn't even keep the packaging.

She was that sure I'd love it.

I feel really awful.

But I'm never going to use it. Ever. I didn't even use it when she gave it to me. I just took it out, looked at it, smiled and said "thanks" and then put it back and put it on the furthest edge of the table, and started drawing. But she didn't notice. She actually didn't notice. I felt mean for doing it, but I didn't know what else to do. I really didn't want it. I couldn't even pretend to like it, very well. I said, "Uh, wow." when I was looking at it. In the same sort of voice you whisper "oh my god" when you hear one of your best friends just died in a car accident.

Reminds me of christmas 2 years ago... I wanted a PC!

... I got a Stereo-set, WHICH, was almost as expensive as a PC! Now I have a PC! though.

From now on, I don't get surprise presents any more. For anybody. It doesn't work.

So close to getting a wacom. And yet so far.

I'm going to ask her, off handedly, whether she kept the packaging because I want to check something on it. If she did, I'll try exchanging it. But I don't think that'll work.

BTW. Just to make it easier for you, I got myself a wacom last week

She took the camera to show my brother. Now she's going to the shops. Perhaps she's exchanging it for a wacom?

There is always hope...

What kind of Wacom are you wanting? Do you have your heart set on a specific one, or will any do?

Will you maybe use the camera at some point...Digital cameras can be really cool...

Be sure you respond to this...I might have a surprise for you.

lol quite a funny story, except it kinda fell apart in the last paragraph. How about you stop moaning, get a job, and buy that wacom yourself!

Guess what I'm getting for christmas this year? INSURANCE!!! Well I can be sarcastic about it, but it's gonna save me like £1000, so I'm actually very grateful for it.

Arch: She wasted her money on something I'll never use, and I can't say anything because that's ungrateful. And for me, the frustrating part is that it could have bought a wacom.

I do have a job. I work. Hard. For two years I gave most of my earnings to my mom, and it was only recently that I started spending it on paying off my school tour. So I haven't ever had the money to buy a wacom despite working for three years.

So don't get me wrong. I'm not whining and demanding expensive presents. I'm frustrated that I was bought an expensive present I'll never use, when the same amount of money could have bought a wacom. You see how that's disappointing and frustrating? And I can't say anything, obviously, and I have to pretend to be delighted with it.

It's hard for me to save money in school on account of me giving it to my mother for two years.

I do contribute as much as I can.

You can't tell me you wouldn't be secretly disappointed in the same situation.

On the contrary, I had bills and food to worry about. I had to buy a car for transportation (no other way to leave my home except by my mother) and pay for insurance, as well as other misc. stuff that my mom wouldn't/couldn't pay for. Not everyone had it so easy. Especially now, when I'm also paying for school. I think I saved $200 for myself over two years, since I was only working part time. I built an amplifier for my guitar with it.'

I'd kill for a video camera too... I could by a digital cam (although I already have one), I could buy a wacom, I could by a scanner maybe... but for some reason I cannot buy a video camera...

You don't understand what I'm trying to say.

I will never use the camera. It's not my fault I actually hate cameras. I always, always break them or something. I hate clowns, too. I don't choose to have no interest in Cameras.

Which is why it sucks to get a camera, which is expensive. I have to pretend to like the camera. I have to pretend to use the camera. Because it's so horribly expensive.

Imagine your parents dropping hints that you're getting a car for your birthday. You're excited. On your birthday, you're given an expensive work of art painting. It costs the same as the car, but you don't like expensive work of art paintings. But you have to pretend to like it because it was so horribly expensive. And you're grateful they spent that money on you, but at the same time disappointed, because not only were you expecting a car, and not only did the painting cost the same as the car, but you're never going to use or like this painting, and therefore their money is completely wasted. All that money, wasted.

You see? I wouldn't mind if I'd gotten nothing for my birthday. It's the fact enough to buy a wacom was spent on something I'll never use instead.

Ah well - a Wacom isn't like the holy grail ... billions of people get along without one. It is "nice", not "necessary". Just start using the camera. Photograph your mum. Put her online.  ;D

My mother-in-law does the same thing for my daughter. We have a mountain of really ugly but expensive clothes in out attic that she bought for her. Most of the would fit her just about now, but we've had them since she was born, 18 months ago. And one time we went to visit her in Spain, she had just bought a new hi-fi. For us to use in the guest bedroom while we were staying there. Like we had brought any CDs. Or that we came to Spain to play CDs. Or that we were sending her money at the time to help her buy a new house and she spends it on a hi-fi.

But then, don't get me started on the subject of my mother-in-law. Just thank goodness that she doesn't speak English, and I don't speak Spanish (or at least I don't understand it at the rate SHE speaks it).

Yuf,  why not rent your camera out to all the poor bastards who want one desperately, and save up for that wacom?

Hey, why not sell nude pictures of yourself on the net and save up for that wacom?

Hey, why not take pictures of those drawings of Luna, and then use a paint program instead of using a wacom?

Hey, how about taking a time machine back to when the world didn't have cameras OR wacoms and become so busy churning butter and making wagon wheels that you forget all about that wacom?

Hey, how about telling your mom the truth so she doesn't start buying you upgrades for the camera?  Or atleast fix the camera so it doesn't work temporarily - go with your mom to the store, then pretend to DISCOVER the wacom and get really excited and exchange it, since the camera is obviously a bad model anyway.

Well... it's the thought that counts, right? ....right?

Actually, no, it doesn't really. I remember when my mom, the country-club type that she is, bought me a $1000 pink designer dress for my birthday. And she absolutely knew that I wanted a vert ramp or a half pipe for my skateboarding. I was as mad as you are right now... but don't worry, you'll get over it.

If I was in your position right now, I'd wait a month before selling the camera on eBay. Just make sure that you use it consistantly for the time being.

"Oh no, the camera BROKE! At least it's still under warrantee. What's that? Oh, you don't have to buy me a new camera -- I think a wacom tablet would be more useful for me."

Oh well, not sure the digital camera company would give you cash if your camera broke. They'd probably just give you a replacement.

But you must admit it was a noble idea. :)

Anyways? Why the hell do you hate cameras? If you like drawing, how come photography doesn't interest you? And if you don't want your camera, I'll surely take it!

I'd be more than thrilled if my parents bought me ANYTHING that had something to do with my interests. Instead I get clothes or trinkets that break in a year.

Ding, Ding, DING!!

LGM gets it...now will Yufster?

Jeez...

Okay, here's the deal:

First: The camera isn't that bad. Besides, you obviously feel bad that you don't like it...sort of. So, first thing, give the camera a chance.

Second: I want pictures of Ireland. Streets, country side, nice buildings.

Third: Go give your mom a hug. It was a really nice thought and she probably thinks she was doing something really big for you. Photography=ART. Maybe she just doesn't understand. Mom's can be that way. Just be grateful that she's trying.

If you do these things I will send you my Wacom tablet. I've never used it in the three years I've owned it. So, someone might as well get use out of it.

It's a little one, but it works great. When you get a nicer one, send it back to me. It's like a rental. Due to our massive age difference and the whole scary interaction with people on the internet thing I would appreciate it if you ran this by your parents first. If they want they can contact me and discuss it.

Happy birthday.

Seriously, I'm not taking other peoples stuff. That happens to me; I don't use things, and I lend them to other people, and the second I do I need them again. Even things like sellotape, or pencil sharpeners.

I have tried to use it. It just doesn't feel right. I just couldn't make the transition. I can produce better art with just the mouse. I have been drawing with a mouse for years, so it's not much of a surprise.

If you want to think about it for a few days that's fine. We can also find an alternative way to tell your mom.

If your not cool with it though, I understand, it makes sense.

But, if you would still like to take some photos of Ireland and post them here that would be great.

I know what a tablet is. I was trying to piss someone off. Plus, where I come from, it's always called a 'tablet'. 'Wacom', as a word, gets on my nerves. It makes me think I'm in a 1950's space sit com when I hear it. Why would anyone want something with such a stupid name?

I first knew it as 'tablet'. I didn't know what a 'wacom' was when I heard it the first time (naturally  ::)), but I quickly learned it's meaning... and I want one also... I better check with my parents in case we're going to town this weekend......

It's a bit like saying "Fender", or "Jeep"...Wacom has become synonymn with pen tablet...which is a shame, since many other tablets are just as good nowadays, Wacom is just the most exclusive.

I have a Turst, and trust me, he he, it works just as fine.
(Except it requires battery and has a tendency to not work if not placed on a perfectly horisontal surface.)
