Well, they've been released in Japan, and only now the regular magazines are discussing the PSP and DS battle for king of handhelds, but what do you think, which seems more exciting, enticing, and overall suits you P.S. feel free to talk about other handhelds i.e. gizmondo 'n stuff.

Here's some fuel to get you started:
1: pro PSP: The PSP has the most stylish look of any handheld, it takes away the childish stigma that comes with handhelds, and the whole "pocket" idea has been cleverly replaced with the more adult, "portable". It has a similar graphical power to the PS2 and is set to carry the torch for future handheld markets.

2: anti-PSP: The PSP is an incrediblly tediously built machine, by using a defective cooling system used in vaio laptops, and by it's incredibly short battery life, it's set to sink.

3: pro-DS: The nintendo DS is the pinnacle of nintendo's handhelds, who better to take it into the adult market than the king of handhelds. Nintendo will win with it's established IP and long list of quality launch titles.

4: Anti-DS: The DS is a piece of crap, it is badly made and rushed. It was designed as a competitor to the PSP between SONY's 2003 meeting and E3 2004. It is hardly worth owning, due to it's silly design, bad graphics, size and ergonomics, DS? must stand for door stop.

(note these are only for goading you into replying, my mind will be made up later)

( any game review scores are not to be quoted from and official licenced magazines such as cube and p2 magazine, as they are nothing but adverts for their selected platforms, if you want to quote, quote EDGE (the king) and Games tm or something like that) :=

Alright there are a few flaws inthe statement that you had made. The first Iw ish to point out is that the DS is not meant to be the primary competitor towards the PSP. Because of their similar release dates that may seem to be the case, but in terms of hardware and capabilities, the newest incarnation of the game boy will be the direct competitor.

Size and ergonomics? have you held a DS. It fits in your hand comfortably, and only causes discomfort after around 4 hours of continuous play. The only fault in it's design, I see, is the lack of analogue which is made up for with stylus control (it takes some time, but if you get it down, it is smooth as butter).

You are right to state the DS was rushed, with it's lack of quality titles (hell it was announced earlier that year..that's saying something). but will definatly pull through with a long list of great upcoming titles that seem to be using the wide range of DS abilities.

But let's talk about the PSP. The PSP has unbelievable graphics and stylish controls via the analogue stick. The battery life is a supreme killer in my opinion, and one major reason as to why it is not as large of a hit in japan as it could be. I am excited about a lot of their upcoming origional titles (grim Jr. especially) but feel there are some systematic flaws that need to be fixed immediatly for it release into the US Market. The first, and most important is the flaw where the UMD discs pop out of the system randomly. Add to that dead pixels (DS has them too), overheating, strange appearances of dust, buttons sticking, buttons not being recognized (these are all in short percentages, but can still happen and be a huge problem) IF it wants any success in the US market it definatly needs to address these issues. Other than that I see them both competiting well, and that the PSP will definatly flourish more in the US market than the japanese.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmkay................ aaaaaaaaand the award for the Forums' biggest psycho goes to..........

In reply to BMF, you might be right, but y'see these are not my opininions and I personally would love to hold either console, but sadly I live in Ireland and have to wait till march till either is released, so I just have to stick with waiting religiously for the next EDGE with some info on either, but I find it interesting that the umd's pop out spontaneously, I hope the problem is fixed soon

This also branches out into a prophecy  I discovered which is, all of the major consoles I.E. the NES, the PS2 were released with flaws that meant the consoles had to be racalled, which may be good news (or bullshit, we'll wait and see)

Coming from the guy who criticized my replies?, you're dead!

Only jokin, Nintendo DS is a new handheld games machine with N64 style graphics on two screens

PSP stands for playstation portable (it's cool, I know) It is basically a teeny tiny PS2 with a built in widescreen go to EDGE.co.uk for info :=

I would be inclined towards the PSP, as it would have much different games on a portable handheld , whereas the DS will be relaease old games with DS after the title as per usual, nothing really new, however Metal Gear Solid on the PSP looks to be awesome... Ã, But then having owened a Gameboy , Gameboy pocket, Gameboy colour, Gameboy Advance, you cant hope for the best for the DS, though i dont think that touch screen thing will work, and do we really need 2 screens?

When it normally comes to things like this , i like to wait and see well after the release dates.

On instict though, I think the PSP has more of my interest and curiosity.

That may be true at the moment, because of it's quick release date. but a lot of it's upcoming titles are completely new or very updated (an online animal crossing, a new version of wario ware) as well as some great origional titles such as :Jump superstars...think smash brothers with Jump Manga characters. Another Code which is a true blue adventure game, and not to mention the other numerous unique approaches to already established series, Gunbare Goeman, Yoshi Touch and Go, Kirby magic Paintbrush, and many more which utilize all the aspects of the system, while keeping it entertaining.

Now I seem biased, but the PSP as well has some great games coming out including the new metal gear solid, Grim Jr. (jonen vasquez as the art director), a new dynasty warriors that looks smoother and more beautiful than any of the ps2 and xbox incarnations....and tales of eternia, by far the most beautiful sprite based rpg I have ever seen. They both are garnering to a different type of player.

The PSP is more towards the hardcore gamer, with a lot of solid video game foundations, while the DS caters more to the casual person who hasn't had much gaming experience.....I think it is really apples and oranges in my opinion..but think both are going to be great..

Well I think that it goes the other way... with the DS focussing pretty much only on handheld gaming. Now I'm not saying only the hardcore gamer, but I am saying that it only concerns itself with the games. The PSP on the otherhand will be bought (in my opinion) by those kids who want to look cool and hardcore. They get this cool gadget with awesome graphics and stuff that can do a million and one things... but nothing new. Well thats the way I see it. Feel free to disagree.

I think they are both good consoles, but I tend to be leaning more to the DS because of it's more interesting gaming rather than just flashier graphics.

My girlfriend's father bought her mother a DS. How romantic.

There was a similar thread to this on New Years'. I don't think I'll post the whole thing here on this thread, because it's gratuitously long and a bit tangental (you'll have to read one or two other posts on the thread to understand why I was cogitating about the X-Box and Gamecube and what-have-you), but feel free to click on over here if you want my analysis of it.

Neither are worth buying. The PSP because everything PS is shit and crappy, and the DS because it's only a quick way for Nintendo to make some money before it's next gen machine. It's filler.

Blackthorne

I've got a hand-held video game built in.

If I wanna play video games, I'll use a system, in my home.  Otherwise, I don't feel the need to carry video games with me.
