I've seen a lot of very nice, qaunt little Sierra and Lucas style games made with AGS that - granted - are very fun and entertaining (which is really the point of this after all isn't it?) - But has anyone tried to use AGS to produce games that are somewhat more dramatic and sophisticated? Has anyone tried to really push this little app to it's limits and nudge the envelope a bit? I intend to - who's with me? LOL :D
Well all I can say is, AGS is a pretty powerful and flexible engine, you don't really need to use all of its features to make a good game. On the other hand, if there's a game which uses mostly all of the engines' feature, it's not necessarily (definitely not) a good game.
It all depends on how well you design your games and implement them using the package's existing features.

Dramatic? That is really up to you to decide. You could write a more complex story with more dramatic artwork and such, but I don't think that has nothing to do with AGS.
Sophisticated? That is yet to be seen. If you mean other forms of games away from the traditional adventure genre, there's been many successful attempts at it.
I threw AGS in a gold-fish bowl and it continued to work ever since!
Seriously though, did you ever play Pleurghburg Dark Ages? Thats a good start for "ability pushing".
I think there are a tonne of fantastic, sophistocated, well-made games out there. Plenty of people have used AGS to create non-adventure games too, which I thing is "pushing the envelope" a bit. I'm not entirely sure what you're expecting though. I think there are some great games out there that give commercial games a run for their money, and what can you ask beyond that? I'm currently making an RPG in AGS and, not to blow my own horn (well, a LITTLE bit), I think I'm doing a pretty good job of putting some of the scripting through it's paces.
I think you'll also find some of the more sophisticated uses of the engine's code don't result in some particularly flashy feature, so it's not always immediately obvious where a lot of effort has been made. As it's already been said, graphics/sound/story don't necessarilly have much to do with AGS' abilities but are what make a good, sophistocated game.
Still, more power to you for being ambitious. Make a fantastic game!
I truely believe that AGS has enough features for any game creator,
the engine is truely amazing! Thanks CJ for all your effort.
Further more on testing its capabilities I think its very unlimited cause you
can fake 3d with 2d graphics and further more I also think its limited to what
you can wrap your mind around!
As far as true 3d goes maybe one day but how many of you can model 3d chars?

I take it you have never come across "Warrior of might"? It does not only nudge the envelope, it'll stamp it and post it for you too.
Seriously though, I hope you understand that you come across as a bit vain, claiming to go where none of us have ever gone before - to do a "dramatic" and "sophisticated" game.
That's like going to Monster Garage and say "Hey guys, your bikes are swell, but have you ever thought of constructing some real choppers which will actually look cool?
If what I have in mind works out - then AGS will be the only thing I'll use-for a very long while at least - since I do 3d in Poser and Bryce and they are MORE than sufficient for doing background, foreground, and character work - and I'm also a non-professional artist.
I am also good at voices to - although I could sure use somebody to do female voice overs when and if I need them. I want to do a game with photrealistic backgrounds, a great soundtrack, and in first person perspective.I've been trying to think of some way to immerse the player more into the game as well.
I have seen some GREAT stuff done with AGS - but I want to go for something that is less like maniac mansion, and more like a survival horror / mystery thing that will be extremely immersive, thoroughly addictive, and genuinely disturbing LOL ;D
MWA HA HA HA HAAAAAARRRRR...
I'm sorry - not at all meaning to sound vain - just wanted to see what could be done if you really max it out.I'm just very new and enthuasitic about AGS - I wanna do something with it that's awsome...
First person game, and completely immersing the player into the game? Sounds like you'd want to go for a text adventure. I bet that's a challenge with AGS ;)
Actually I wanna use video clips and sounds and creepy music and lions and tigers and bears - OH MY! LOL :D
QuoteYou are standing in the living room. On the tv is a video clip from some creepy metal band, in which a giant lion and tiger are fighting a horde of giant bears in a city, crushing the buildings while they're at it.
On the table is a bottle of ketchup.
't Would work ;D
Laughing out loud baby! ;D
So, agsforums down again, eh?
No wonder...
Just as long as you don't get it into your head that you're the first to delve into these areas. FP, photo realistic backgrounds, great sound, scary story, immersive atmosphere... it's all been done before. I keep getting the feeling you've only played a few AGS games out there.
Half Life 2 was made in AGS.
True story.
I want to tell a story ...that's what it's all about...
A story that you can't resist playing...
A story that your afraid to play...
A story that might send shivers down your spine, and leave you sleeping with one eye open...
Maybe that's what I'll call it..."ONE EYE OPEN"...
MWA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAARRRRRR, LOL :D
WOOT WOOT WOOT : "Copyright Alert", "Copyright Alert", I call dibbs on that title! I call dibbs on that title! LOL ;D
You're an odd fella. Now you sound like you'd want to use an episode of Candy Candy or Mabletown as story. That in a text adventure ::)
I wish you the best of luck in reaching your goal. Just keep in mind that there are professional studios and teams comprised of multiple people that haven't reached that particular goal. I'm not trying to discourage you, just wondering if you've got realistic expectations.
It would also help with immersion if the spelling/grammar is correct. I wouldn't want the chills down my spine to result from misuse of the word, "your." Sorry, a touch anal.
Dude, don't touch his anus
Why, are you getting jealous? ;D
See? Now we're having a discussion conducive to great game ideas.
Ok, thank you, everybody!
Bill, we've got your message, and we're eagerly awaiting the next step in this grand scheme of yours.
When you have a plot and some screenshots, head over to the "games in production" forum and get yourself a thread.
Good luck!
