Being an Australia, we never got Mystery Science Theatre 3000 over here (it may have been on a cable channel once upon a time, but I'm not sure). Despite this, I got myself hooked after finding a copy of the MST3K movie in my local video store once. I'm aware you can download episodes from various places, and you can buy the DVD sets from places like Amazon, but the DVD of the movie seems to have gone out of print. I've noticed you can still buy it second hand for prices that would make Satan blow milk out of his nose - but I'm just not paying over $100US for it.

It's a fantastic movie, does anyone know anywhere, online or even in a store that you can still buy this? (Not second hand though, I just don't trust that sort of thing).

Man, I havent seen MST forever. All I remember of it was that gumball machine guy and one of the eposides where one of the captions was "Dad, we've been running out of Captain Crunch lately." Ahhh, the memories.

Is 12 dollars ok?

o_O Why is that when I searched for it on Amazon, I only found prices 10 times that?? Er, thanks Eric!

EDIT: Oh er, that's VHS. I'm really after the DVD.

well for 12 bucks... know anyone who can convert it to DVD for cheapie? or are you looking for special features and such and not just the DVD format?

It's on Ebay for 20 bucks... one dude put 3 up, try emailing him and asking if you can just buy it?

Being a fan of MST3K, I don't think that the movie was very good.  At all.
When they replaced Joel (who was hilarious) with Mike (who is not), and you have to more or less see Mike, Tom Servo and Crow carrying
80% of a roughly two hour runtime (they do sit down and pick apart a film, but the movie choice, "This Island Earth", wasn't a particularly good choice,
or else they just couldn't come up with good material for it).  I  found myself extremely bored at the theaters, whereas I'm usually laughing every
5-10 minutes during the show.  The main problem was that they tried to make a 'story' for Mike, Tom and Crow to do instead of just sitting them down to pick
apart a film, and since Mike gets annoying after awhile I felt myself wanting to switch channels or something, but I couldn't.  Anyway, if you want to buy
it it's your choice, just giving you a heads up that finding episodes of the series is a better bet than buying this movie.

I've seen the movie, and I laughed myself silly, seriously :P I can understand your problems with it, you're coming from the perspective of a fan of the series so you can see how it's worse. I can't, so I don't mind if it's worse. I do want to get the series, but the movie is a good place to start for me and I -know- I found it funny.

Snarky

I actually think the movie is a good bit better than most episodes of the show. Choosing a film that is inherently entertaining works better than some of the preposterously bad films they rip apart on the show. The snark-per-minute reading is higher than on the show, and as for the whole Joel vs. Mike issue, that is some of the most pathetic fan whining I've ever come across.

Plus, this island earth was referenced in Zak McKrakken!

I found the movie pretty damned amusing.  However, I prefer it when they tackle a film that's an utter disaster rather than one that actually wasn't too bad for its time.  Unfortunately, studio pressure forced them to use a more decent movie than they'd had in mind.

The Mike v. Joel situation; They both had their merits.  Mike's got more personality and actually delivers many of the lines better but Joel had a nice mellow don't-give-a-crap tone to him.  Mike had been in place for awhile before the movie came out.  Since there wasn't much choice concerning the movie used or the primary human, can't blame the MST3K crew too much.  The movie, like any other, is a matter of personal preference.  If you watched and enjoyed it, best of luck securing a copy.
