Okay, this one is hard.
I have a *****. A really intelligent one.

What I have learned so far:

It controls the computer all the time.
It appears to be memory-resident.
It is extremely aware of words "anti-*****", "*****" and so.

Behavior of this is really strange. It controls Internet explorer, that's for sure. Whenever I search for something named "*****" or something close to that, it automatically closes the window. immediately.

Same thing with Norton anti***** setups (2002 and 2003) - as soon setup wizard window opens, some *dark force* closes it so fast that all i can notice, is just a flicker of a yellow window... So - I think my opinions are right. It should be memory-resident.

Another conclusion - It attacks all files which include word "*****". like - ALL files, not just executables or archives.

Here's the strangest proof of this! I have some mp3-s of Russian pop band "*****". Things went strange when Winamp immediately closed just when I tried to play *these* songs...  :o All others play fine. *****'s not. And I have 650 songs. Why only *****?!

I tried trendmicro's online ***** scan. Guess what? Window closes after clicking "free online scan" link...

So - I'm desperate and have no idea what's going on.

P.S. I'm running Windows ME. Recently I had problems with resolution - It automatically changed to 102x768 and I cound't make it SMALLER! Like, I moved the slider to 800x600 and pressed "Ok", "Apply" and so on - and screen flickered, but resolution remained the same!!! Tried it several times, reinstalled video/monitor drivers and got rid of this. But strange enough. Maybe It's connected. Maybe just of mr. Gates' jokes.

So - Has anyone seen this? Can give me any idea what to do or at least how is this ***** called!
I really-really don't want to format my HD, because I have no place to store 37GB of various stuff...

Thanks in advance...

And you probably know the word I'm talking about - DON'T USE IT IN YOUR POSTS or I'm not avalaible to read the replies! (Yes, ***** closes this thread window then, too!)

The only suggestions I can think of, if you don't have any clue as to it's name (because I have no clue what it is, and can't really spend the time to search for it). Is...

Run your computer on s4fe-mode (notice l33t spelling, just in case it looks for these words, too). And see if you can't do something from there.

Or f0rm4t your system, and get win XP, while you're there, as ME is complete crap.

Or ctr1+4lt+d3l and d3activate programs running and test out, until ***** doesn't respond anymore. Then you'll know where to hopefully locate it.

You could also get a program to record what programs are activated and when, and then do something to trigger ***** and look to see what does the job.

Hope that helps.

Ooh, man, that's way too bad. It's too bad you didn't have an anti-***** program already installed! Hopefully, it didn't affect any of your ags stuff, right? Can you still write to CDs? Or you could attempt to copy files from the hard drive to another.

Yes, I could write CD-s... if I had a cd-writer.
But what use of this? damned thing probably goes then to CD-s and then what? Keep it alive, so further generations could "enjoy" this "joke" too?

I know it all sounds like a practical joke.
I can't believe something could make me kneel not to say it's real name.
This is ridiculous.

Seems that scores are 0:1 in battle of me and *****...
Oh hell... make it 0:2 now.

That bites... I mean REALLY bites...

My knowledge on *****es means I can't help you any more than Mills, but you have my complete sympathy...

And I recommend trying what Mills said (like you already haven't??)

Oh... and also, correct me if I'm wrong, but if a w0rm or suchlike is memory-resident, doesn't that mean you can stop it simply by turning off your computer? Or am I dreaming?

Edit: I've emailed the kind folks at Viru5list.com to ask for their help. I (personally) can't find anything, but I trust these people will... I will post a reply when they answer.....

Did you try what Mills suggested?
If that doesn't work you could search for a DOS anti-***** program and make a boot disk.

There's nothing in tasks. Closed everything. But I imagine such monster could infect something nice, like explorer.exe and be resident all the time...

Still, I keep formatting as a last chance. Not *so* desperate yet.

On the bright side, I still surf in net, play games and do games/3d. Nothing serious still hasn't happened, except there's a word I can't see, read or type.

And there's no v1ru5e5 I can protect myself from.

You guys have been very helpful so far, let's see if someone comes out with a working solution or is able to name this piece of hell.

I think this thing has to be fairly new, because no-one knows it's name yet and It's compatible with Windows/IE. (damn compatible, I must say. It reads text from my screen/keyboard and if it doesn't like it, closes the window! What an idea for porn control for children!!!)

So, I think DOS antiv1ru5e5 are too old to find anything, and ME doesn't have DOS, or just restricts me form entering simple command.com-only-interface.

Anyway, creeper MUST DIE. (Gives some ideas for a new game, heh)

***** = Penis?

.....

What? It has the same number of stars... 5 stars, five letters. Easy.

.....

Okay, I'll see what I can do.

Veteran, writer... with loads of unreleased games. Work in progress.

I was a little confused as to what the hell you were talking about at first... but then suddenly, I realized... this is one of those Mad Libs right?  You know where you are given a story with a bunch of missing words, and you have to fill in the blanks with nouns, adjectives and verbs off the top of your head.  I haven't done one of those in years...

j/k ;)  I know, you've got a bug in your computer, right... it's a bitch, ain't it?  Unfortunately, I don't know how I can help you.  Good Luck, anyway.
Watch, I just killed this topic...

It actually took me awhile to figure out what the word was ^^; Mostly because I thought your post was a joke at the start. It clicked though, I get it. That sounds REALLY annoying. I can't really offer any help because you've already done the things I would suggest, but you have my sympathy. I've been in situations where some weird unexplainable crap happens that noone can help you with. It sucks.

You still haven't said if you tried booting in safe mode. Normally you just hold down F8 while Windows boots to get to the menu, but it might be different for Windows ME.
Click Start:Run.
Enter "msconfig"
There's an option in there, under advanced or something - "Enable Startup Menu," tick it.

Robert Eric & jannar85 : It seems you just didnt read Increator's post carefully :

QuoteAnd you probably know the word I'm talking about - DON'T USE IT IN YOUR POSTS or I'm not avalaible to read the replies! (Yes, ***** closes this thread window then, too!)

Please edit your post and change the forbidden word by "*****", so that Increator will be abble to read this topic again.

EDIT : Ok here is a direct link for a free anti-***** which works under Windows and DOS:
http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/avg6574fu_free.exe
and the serial number : AVG-1-17384747-OWG

In case the ***** won't allow this software to install, I could zip the anti-***** folder and upload it on my website, so you could try to launch it under DOS.

hehe yeah I sounded like an old fart sorry  :P

Robert Eric

I had to edit my post five times so I didn't sound like an ***hole, so don't worry.

Well, Dorcan, you're my hero.
This program s fantastic! I really couldn't imagine that people have still wit to make DOS virusscans.
And this helped me out. I did let it repair as much it could, then finished the virus in DOS mode (some files "not heal-able" in windows)'

Shortly, 3 IRC port trojans and a Kazaa's Worm/Kwbot had to get the hell outta my HD.

Thanks.

Peter Thomas

I assume that means your problem is fixed, yes?, given all the 'naughty' words you put in that post.

Still haven't found out what it is called or anything... Anybody else got a clue?
Peter: "Being faggy isn't bad!"
AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

InCreator

Yes, problem *is* solved.
Baddie had a name:

Backdoor.Ircbot.au
(which is actually an alias)

Another one I found - not sure which one was the worse, was named

Downloader.Pitux.au

Well, that's it. Beware!

I had this awful PORN once that replaced every instance of the word PORN with the word PORN in big capital letters.  I only noticed this particular PORN when I read over messages I'd written in discussion groups.
