Okay here is the situation...
I have a friend burn me a copy of a few AVI's to CD. Unfortunatly, there is a CRC error on one of them.
I cant play it all, or else it will crash my system.
If I try and copy it from the CD to harddrive, it wont let me do that.
I have programs to fix this file, but I need to get it off the CD first. If I dont get it off the CD, for some reason my movie fixers wont copy a fixed version to harddisk. I have to copy it off CD first.
What can I do to do this? Or how can I get a fixing program that would do it right from the CD.
I think the reason my programs wont do it is becouse it cant write to the same CD.
I am currently using DivFix.

Here are a couple of things that've worked for me in similar situations:
1) If you can read the files to open them and have them displayed, then they're on the disc. You might try making sure that the CD is "Finalized." You might be able to finalize the disc in whatever program you're using. If it won't display an option to, then you might try pretending that you've got a multi-session project going and burn a small file (a small text-file, for example) and making sure that you've got the Finalize after burn option selected (may be listed as allow further recording, etc.). I've had better luck using Track-At-Once writing vs. Disc-at-once in these cases.
2) If the CD's finalized and you're still unable to copy anything from it or load the AVIs without it crashing then you can still try making an image from the CD. Whatever burning program you're using, it's probably got an option to make an image from the CD. Do that, choose .ISO. The ISO is a fairly universal image format. For mine, I use WinISO (I believe it's time-limited shareware) and it'll let you extract, add or delete files from your image-file.
If I can clarify anything or if those 2 things don't work, holler again and I'll brainstorm.
While we're on CD errors:
Is there a way around the "Cycle Redundency Error" I get when copying files off a DVD disc I just burned? I can open the drive, view the files and open the files, but I can't copy them onto my hard drive. It can't be the DVD; it's brand new and undamaged.
If you're getting that error then it means either 1) Bad file or 2) Drive's fault. To elaborate: if 1) then the file is either bad on the HD before burning or you've done a bad burn on the disc. If the original file was fine (or if you're merely copying from the DVD and not opening (via winzip, windows media player, etc.) then it's a disc issue. Possible reasons for this occurance may be:
a) Poor quality media or incompatible with burner.
b) Other intensive program running during burn
c) Error in burning software
d) Bad drive
e) Burning faster than media rating. This is usually blocked but some media-types don't communicate their speed appropriately. Try burning at 1x, take a nap and see if it works.
e) Conflict, either w/ hardware or you've had two different burning programs installed at various times.
f) RIAA. They don't want you to copy anything, ever. Even if it's a xerox of your ass, they think that you're infringing upon your own ass' copyright.
2) If you're reading the disc on a drive other than your burner, it may not be able to handle the media properly. In rare cases, usually due to media type, a burner won't recognize the disc because it wasn't finalized (this is normally just a prob w/ DVD-ROM drives). The only solutions in this case are to make sure you finalize the disc or get a niftier drive.
This could also be an OS problem. While I haven't had the CRC error, I've noticed that WinME & 98 report incorrect total file sizes while browsing the root, even though the total (via directory browsing) is correct. If you're on 2000, NT4 or XP this problem won't apply.
As far as workaroundss, you could use an imaging program to "rip" the disc or try using the Copy & Paste commands rather than click-dragging. This has worked for me for similar problems on occasion.
Yeah, I have the CRC error. I tried copy and paste and ripping using Nero. Any other ideas?
If you can't rip the contents to an iso using Nero, you might try some other programs. There are some freeware alternatives available (I believe there are a couple at Afterdawn. (http://www.afterdawn.com) I seem to remember that WinISO does this as well, though I could be mistaken. If you've made sure the disc is finalized, burned different media successfully and ensured that files are good when you copy them, I can't really see any reason you shouldn't be able to access it. All I can assume (without mucking about with it myself) is that you're hosed. Sorry.
Hi!
QuoteIf I try and copy it from the CD to harddrive, it wont let me do that.
Try Unstopable Copier (http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~roadkil/).

heh I'm quite aware of the url of the unstopable copier, what a coincidence!
Unstoppable copier didn't work. In fact, a file I created worked better than that one (Not to insult it).
Sorry guys. I am gonna try the WinISO thing and see if it works.
If anyone can create something in C++ to help, that would be great.

ok I may have found a solution. I could use ISO Buster from www.webattack.com, then extract the AVI file to my drive and Divfix to repair the index so it can play on media player.
YAY!
