Transparency Problem

I'm not sure if this goes here, but it's driving me so insane that I really need it fixed right now.
I'm making an image which is actually going to end up on a T-shirt and every time I try to save it as a GIF in Photoshop I lose the transparent background, it just turns white. I've never had this happen before when saving images with transparency and I'm at a loss for what to do.
It's made me extremely angry.
Any help would be great.

Are you sure you're not just viewing them on a white surface, say the windows preview window?

D

I did think that earlier on, and thought I was being an idiot, but the same thing happens when I open the image in any other paint program.

So your problem is basically, that you save the image, and make sure the transparency stays, and then you open it again with the same program, Photoshop, and it's no longer transparent. I could ask you if you're sure if the programs you use to open it later on support transparency, but I don't think you're an idiot, not knowing you and all... Still, it sounds like there's a thing about your settings, that it actually doesn't save it transparent.

Also, this thread is probably going to be transferred to General Discussion soon. Unless you want to post the Photoshop project file and ask what's wrong with it. People might find out. I'd love to take a closer look, but I don't have my PS installed nor can I find it immediately.

You have to select Image->Mode->Indexed Color from the menu, then choose "exact palette" and 256 colors and check "transparency" (PS 7).
Then save it as a gif.
Works fine for me.

Btw, this thread doesn't belong here as is stated clearly in the forum rules.

Ah, so I did post in the wrong place.
Yes, those were the options I was selecting, so I think something else must be wrong.
I won't upload it right now, but I think I'll take a break and try again with it later. Frustration doesn't help anything.
Thanks for your help.

Alternatively, leave it in RGB mode with a transparent background in Photoshop (i.e. ditch the 'Background' layer) and then use File-->Save for Web.

This'll convert to 256 colour and preserve transparency for you.
