QuoteKaplan said software developers will receive kits that will let them create games to take advantage of the two-screen setup.

The screens on the Nintendo DS will be 3 inches each, about the size of an existing GameBoy screen, the company said. Nintendo promised more details at the E3 game convention in May.

Nintendo has said it is also working on successors to the GameBoy Advance and the GameCube, which competes with Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox and Sony's PlayStation 2.

Here is the article. Basically, it's the new Handheld from Nintendo.

For some reason they don't think it will take from the market share of the Gameboy. I find this interesting because I would think that it definitely would do exactly that.

But they're so certain they're also developing a successor to the Gameboy Advance. Hmm!

P.S. Will do Mafia-style jobs in exchange for money and journalist credentials before May 14th.

EDIT: Whoops, thought this was the General Forum. That's what I get for having too many IE windows open.

"There seems to be an insatiable appetite for portable play," Kaplan said, citing steady growth in that portion of the market." (from said article)

That's gonna bite them in the ass...

Oh and DS stands for Dual Screen ... cos it has two ... sooo novel ...  ;)

That is what ya get for still using IE

Unless it's some really awesome technology that has never been done before and not just a mini-SNES with a ... dual screen... I don't see how this is a good move for Nintendo. Well, all will be revealed at E3...

But why release two new handhelds? What will be so different about the DS?

Ben

Bah.. Sounds like the Virtual Boy. They're just trying to reheat existing technology to make it look like something new. Ironically, they're doing it to make money, but I doubt they'll profit from such a useless product.

Meowster

I don't think it's fair to say that before they've released more details/pictures. I highly doubt they're just doing it as a quick money maker because, unless there is something different about this console, something unique and brilliant... it's just not going to make money for them. And they know that. They aren't stupid.

Especially odd is that it's not a continuation of the gameboy advance, because they're separately working on the next Gameboy. So it's got to have something that the gameboy doesn't have, because otherwise they're competing against their own market, which is the single most stupid business plan ever.

Virtual Boy!

Okay, maybe they're not stupid. But even smart designers and business-people can screw up. I'm just saying that if they did it once, they can do it again..

I guess I shouldn't speak too soon. It could certainly turn out to be a good product. But you have to admit, it sounds like they're completely clueless  :P

I don't think it has anything to do with Virtual Boy.  It's idiotic in totally different ways.
