Also, not one, but several argument on ags-irc, which is real life at its best, have been solved with an insult (imaginary)sword fight.

Lies.

"Your face!" is the end-all of all insult swordfighting. It has no reply except "Your mother", and who is uncouth enough to say that?

I like the ending, though:
So the princess had to hold her tongue! "Now, you're mine!" said the Ash Lad, and so he got her, and half the realm and kingdom into the bargain.

So by "real life" we mean fairy tales and chat rooms?

I'm not sure the story would make a great adventure game; the first half is just a series of items to pick up, and in the second half the princess provides really obvious hints for each step of the puzzle. Maybe with some edits...

BTW, "Askeladden" ("The Ash Lad") is usually called "Boots" in English, after G.W. Dasent's original translation of the stories. Incidentally, the Norwegian name is an invention by the collectors, Asbjørnsen & Moe, since the name actually used in the folk tales, "Oskefisen" ("The Ash Fart"), was deemed too vulgar.

I live my life in the constant hope that I might one day be called upon to do that thing where you open a locked door by poking the key out with a pen onto the newspaper pushed underneath and then pulling the newspaper to the other side. Some day...

You are taking it too seriously.  ::)

It's just a joke. When I came across this tale I inmediatly thougth of an adventure. "I've nothing better to do, and nothing better to carry, so I'll just take it along with me." should be the Adventure Gamer oath.
And when he is talking with the Princess it was like "USE magpie WITH Princess".  ;D

I tried that one when I was a kid. I was left out of my house and the only way in was doing that in the back door.
The key bounced like two meters away from the newspaper so I had to wait outside for a couple of hours.  :=

The moral of this: In real life you need a bigger newspaper (or possibly a blanket). ;)
