My boyfriend is having trouble with his shuttle PC... something to do with it not detecting the hard drive. Anyway, there's this irritating boot-up splash screen... they call them quickboot screens or somethign I think... and basically all it does it cover up all the information we need to see to work out what the problem is!!

(you know that... verifying DMI pool data.... all that stuff...)

It covers it up with an annoying splash screen that just says 'XPC'...

How do I turn this screen off or remove it completely so I can see that information? I've checked all the user manuals and documentation that came with the shuttle but there's no mention of it....

Well, best guess is that you need to get into the BIOS and disable it. Manuals don't always have BIOS information in them (I know my motherboard's manual doesn't), so yeah. Does it say "press F1 for BIOS" or something? Maybe it's F2, DEL or something similar.

Just smashing my face on the keyboard's gotten me into quite a bit of illogical BIOS's :P
Still here.

Cant find a keyboard or no keyboard present. Press f1 to continue. duh  ;D
About the splash screen, You can disable it on bios setup. Normally its pressing del on setup, but i dont know about the XPC

Yeah, yeah, It happens. A lot.

Meowster

Nope, we searched the BIOS setup and couldn't find it, much to our frustration... that's the first place we looked... and the only place we CAN look, judging by the current state of the PC...

Yeah what's with that 'Cant' find a keyboard... press F1 to continue' message eh ????!

voh

Well, since they're not generic parts, it's possible you can't disable it. I know an old Compaq system I had wouldn't allow me to disable the splash screen, yet my dad's old Packard Bell allowed it through the BIOS. Call support?

Check the BIOS again - I haven't seen a motherboard where you couldn't turn this off. I hate these stupid logos, as they hide important information about the computer.

Look for an option like "Show logo at boot" or something similar. You can also try uploading a screenshot of the BIOS, if you have a digital camera, that way we could take a peek and see if it's there. Normally this option is under Startup or Boot or something similar.

Have you tried pressing tab? Apparently that hides the graphic, although people complain there's a delay, so I don't know how useful that is.

Also, BIOS can be upgraded.
Like, downloaded from internet and replaced.

And managed thru specific flash-bios software. My machine came with a CD with BIOS program on it (auto-updater), and because MB had some problems with video card, I upgraded bios. But I recall having all kind of options in BIOS upgrading program aswell, one of them was custom splash screen. Due importancy of BIOS and fear that something may get wrong, I never tried those options though.

Just dig up homepage of your motherboard manufacturer or bios type (AMIbios, Awardbios, Phoenix...) and check for bios upgrades/software support for your motherboard series.

But to get HD to work, check master/slave DIP switches or try another IDE/SATA/whatever cable.

Meowster

Okay we got it working in the end... it had nothing to do with the harddrive, but something in the motherboard was erm... screwed.

But I'm still really annoyed at the pointless boot logo screen. TAB didn't work either. I'll keep trying to remove it and let you guys know how it goes :) Thanks for all the help!

It actually makes sense. It means, "We can't find a keyboard connected, and without it we don't expect you to be able to use this PC. When we receive your input'd "F1" that'll mean there is now a connection and we'll just keep on booting - so press F1 to continue once you've plugged your keyboard in."

I hate you Rui.  I prefer the idea of "I am a dumb computer" :D Darn all my life is ruined now.

Pointless logo? A simple "ESC" doesn't get rid of it? Maybe that's just a Win98 feature I'm used too.

Why not try start > settings > system > startup & recovery ... may not work, again, may just be a Win2k thing.

Lastly... msconfig.exe?

Okay, I admit - I doubt any of the above will help :P
